yes it was. I remember they had a few minutes of cricket followed by a few minutes of tennis, then back to the cricket for a few minutes and so on. It wasn’t well received by the viewers, letters to the Age were saying “seeing Ian Botham hit John McEnroe for six into the Saba (furniture superstore) car park!” and “I am absolutely disgusted with Channel 9’s scant coverage of the Test Cricket. Thank heavens for radio 3LO”.
The football was the first time Victoria had played South Australia at the MCG in many years, and attracted a crowd of 91,960 (although the game was a blowout due to SA having quite a few players unavailable, and the Vic side featuring a few players who technically weren’t Victorian, such as Jason Dunstall [Queensland] and Terry Daniher [NSW]).
Presumably the game was shown live into Adelaide (and possibly Tassie, regional Victoria and maybe Perth)
No Wimbledon coverage on Nine (the 1978 tournament ran from 26 June until 8 July). Maybe Nine only carried the mens and womens singles finals. From 1980 Nine had full coverage of Wimbledon from first day.
Penthouse Club for anyone else who likes their variety with live crosses to Tattslotto and the trots
Can you imagine anything like that today?
Sweet And Sour… top show that one!
I also liked Wavelength because it was really the only chance to see music videos during the week, otherwise you were limited to weekend shows like Countdown and Sounds. I know I recorded quite a few songs off Wavelength onto a mix tape! We had the audio out port from the TV connected to the auxiliary port in the stereo so it was very easy to record from the TV onto audio cassette.
Being years before getting a VCR, I used to record a lot of ads and idents onto tape as well. I must get those digitised
Not much choice in the early evening if you’re not a footy fan. I’m not a sporty person but watched heaps of sport in my childhood because there was often nothing much else on. Easy to avoid now.
