Classic NZ TV Listings

I have the listings for New Year’s Eve (1999) and New Year’s Day (2000) on both TV One (now TVNZ 1) and TV3 (now Three):

TV3 secured the rights to 2000 Today, featuring its personalities (including Carol Hirschfeld and John Campbell) who co-hosted live and delayed coverage of millennium celebrations in New Zealand and via satellite from around the world.

The 28-hour televised event originally combined two of the largest planned productions: 2000 Today (produced by the BBC) and Millennium Live (from Hal Uplinger, the American producer of Live Aid). However, Millennium Live was abruptly axed on 28 December 1999 when its organisers, the Millennium Television Network (MTN), announced it had failed to secure sufficient funding. Reports indicated that MTN had not paid production and satellite providers before pulling the plug, effectively ending its ambition for a global New Year’s Eve broadcast.

In contrast, TVNZ partnered with Telecom (now Spark) to produce the Telecom One New Zealand Challenge - a 30-hour televised event that traversed the country to celebrate the new millennium. The late (Sir) Paul Holmes led as head anchor, joined by Liz Gunn, Gary McCormick, Jim Mora and Julie White as co-hosts, along with various TVNZ personalities reporting from locations nationwide.

The event mobilised over 1,000 TVNZ and Telecom staff, six regional control centres, 80 camera crews and eight Live Eye units. It also included global ‘flying visits’ via satellite, showcasing major cities as they welcomed the new millennium.

New Zealanders contributed video “Millennium Messages”, which were shown throughout the programme, and news bulletins screened at:

  • New Year’s Eve: 6.05pm (hour-long bulletin) and 10pm
  • New Year’s Day: 2am, 4am, 6am, 8am, 10am, noon (half hour bulletin), 2pm, 4pm, 6pm (hour-long bulletin) and 10pm (half hour bulletin)

To mark the new era, One Network News was rebranded as One News and debuted a refreshed studio set (an updated version of its 1995-99 design) on New Year’s Eve 1999.

Any chance TV2 planned to air Millennium Live, before it was cancelled?

Nope.

So none of the New Zealand TV channels planned to air Millennium Live before being cancelled, right?

Yes.

Any schedules for the TV4 channel’s final day before it rebranded to C4 the following day? (3 October 2003)

Try here https://nztvdb.tripod.com/clg_01Oct03.htm

I think the night before (Tuesday), they aired the last ep of Love is a Four Letter Word (ABC), possibly at 8:30 or 9pm (can’t remember which).

Pretty sure Thursday night was left a bit wanting? I can remember weird people doing weird things in the very white set, trying to act mysterious but looking a lot like idiots.

The Friday didn’t seem like a whole lot of hoorah either: https://nztvdb.tripod.com/clg_03Oct03.htm

Just the beginning of the top 100 and an episode of Jackass before closing down at 1am. On a weekend. Dire.

I did not know that TV One aired a 90s drama Northern Exposure in a 1pm slot which used to air on TV3 here in the early 1990s and followed up to Days Of Our lives which not long after it was moved from TV2 and put in a 2pm slot.

Northern Exposure was first shown on TV3 (now Three) in the summer of 1992/93 but picked up by TVNZ as a rerun in 2004.

Did NZ have their own version (the show was franchised) or did they just import the Australian version?

The Kiwis had their own version, in fact one of the hosts of this version was the wife of NZ PM Mike Moore who served in office for 59 days!
