Did the late change in E Street schedule means the series was dumped from Channel 2’s schedule? E Street was never a hit with NZ audiences first aired on TV3 (now Three) a year before being usurped by The Ralston Group, then it was picked up by Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) only to falter when the series was on TV3, then couple of months later put into afternoon slot on TV One (now TVNZ 1).

Please note: In Christchurch TV2 opens transmission at 6pm due to transmitter aerial problems

TVNZ 2’s 50th anniversary

50 years ago today (30 June) our second national television channel, TV2, was launched.

It began transmission at 1pm that afternoon with the daytime US soap, Search for Tomorrow , which followed the lives of Joanne Tate Vincente and her circle of family, friends and acquaintances.

At its inception TV2 was only available in Auckland and Christchurch. However, in Christchurch, transmission hours were limited due to a faulty aerial at the Sugarloaf transmitter, causing transmission to start at the later time of 6pm instead of the usual 1pm.

Within three months the TV2 signal expanded to cover the Waikato and Bay of Plenty. Wellington viewers had to wait until late 1975 to receive the channel while Dunedin, Southland and Manawatu gained access the following year. Reception outside these areas was not guaranteed.

Commercial advertising ran on TV2 five days a week with Fridays and Sundays being non-commercial.

The channel was designed to reflect a community-oriented philosophy, focusing on regional integration, direct responsiveness to the audience and featuring a subtle Polynesian identity.

Allan Martin, TV2’s director-general at the time, explained, “We’re not based on some distant European model. We’re an organisation built, made and engineered in this part of the world for our own requirements, to serve the national interest.”

This ethos was visible through its Polynesian inspired logo and strong emphasis on local content, with three-quarters of the half hour news slot at 7pm dedicated to regional news and current affairs. Jennie Goodwin became New Zealand’s first regular female newsreader and anchored the national evening news each night, Monday to Friday.

TV2’s community focus was further demonstrated during its first week on air with New Zealand’s inaugural Telethon.

Titled “24 Hours of Excitement and Entertainment”, the event involved approximately 1,200 people (including entertainers and presenters) across Auckland and Christchurch - all volunteering their time to raise funds for the St John Ambulance Service. The first Telethon raised over $485,000.

Today marks the 50th anniversary of the channel we now know as TVNZ 2. I dedicate this post to @TV4, @nztv, @OnAir & @Leotv.

Wow, can’t believe it’s 50 years! Surely TVNZ would celebrate it! Thanks Paddy for this post and a reminder of the history of TV2!

TVNZ 2 today should have celebrated a 2 hour special reflected the history of high and lows of the second tv channel that TVNZ should have been made, but it is so far away from the original focus and today is garbage reality tv either from Australia or the US

NZ’s first Telethon

TV2, which debuted on Monday 30 June 1975, hosted New Zealand’s inaugural 24-hour Telethon during its opening weekend (5-6 July).

Described as ‘a completely spontaneous show with New Zealand and overseas personalities’, the 24-hour Telethon began at 8.30pm on the evening of Saturday 5 July 1975. Derek Payne and Rhys Jones served as co-hosts in Auckland while Rodney Bryant and Bryan Allpress co-hosted from Christchurch.

The goal of that year’s Telethon was to raise funds for the St John Ambulance service, specifically to support a training school for ambulance staff and St John first aid instructors.

Approximately 1,200 volunteers from Auckland and Christchurch contributed their time and efforts as personal donations to the St John appeal.

Max Bostock (from TVW-7 Perth), with extensive experience in telethon productions across Australia, was brought to New Zealand by TV2 to organise the event.

The inaugural Telethon raised over $485,000 for St John and featured an early live performance by Split Enz. The band, who had paused their national tour, performed “Maybe” from their critically acclaimed debut album, “Mental Notes”, which had been recorded in Australia but had not yet been released in New Zealand.

You can watch that performance via NZ On Screen by clicking its link below.

The Shadow Trader

The Shadow Trader (a two-part mystery thriller focused on money, power and a man’s vision of an ideal city - and the two women who confront his lethal game) premiered on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 7.45pm on the evening of Sunday 9 July 1989. The second part screened at 8.30pm on the evening of Tuesday 11 July that year.

Produced in-house by TVNZ’s now-closed drama department (the makers of the Auckland-based Gloss), the mini-series starred British actor James Faulkner (who later portrayed Uncle Geoffrey in Bridget Jones’s Diary) as David Constance, a dubious developer known for his aggressive approach to urban development. Constance’s ambitious waterfront project faced opposition from a rundown café, known as the Best Bet, which was cherished by its inheritors - two spirited women: Tammy (Annie Whittle), a working-class individual, and Joanna (Miranda Harcourt), an art consultant.

You can watch part one of The Shadow Trader via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

The final episode of Hill Street Blues

It’s hard to believe that 38 years ago today (Tuesday 14 July 1987 at 10pm), the final episode ever made of Hill Street Blues screened in New Zealand via TV One (now TVNZ 1),

For those of us who were there (though I wasn’t even born), watching it unfold, that night felt like the end of an era. The groundbreaking US series, which ran from 1981 to 1987, forever changed the landscape of TV drama and blended realism, complex characters and compelling storylines in ways that hadn’t been seen before.

The final episode, “It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over”, was packed with the kind of drama that made Hill Street a cultural touchstone. The fire that gutted the station house was symbolic of the show’s raw, unflinching portrayal of the chaotic and often tragic realities of police work. Yet, in the midst of it all, the series’ signature mix of personal stakes and institutional conflict was on full display, with a gripping storyline that left fans at the edge of their seats.

One of the most unforgettable moments for me, as a television trivia expert, was the confrontation between Buntz and Shipman. The way Buntz - suspended, but still fiercely determined - held Shipman at gunpoint was a perfect reflection of his character’s defiance and moral complexity.

And then, of course, Buntz punching Chief Daniels in the face! A moment Ron Miller, the TV critic, called ‘marvelous’ in his farewell column. It was pure Buntz, through and through.

And let’s not forget the other threads of the episode: Goldblume working with a prostitute to bring down a serial killer; Belker finally dealing with his mother’s possessions (heartbreaking stuff!); and Bates and Sal the plumber sharing a dinner that hinted at something more - some sweet, quiet moments amidst the chaos.

But the final scene? The last words of the series - uttered by the night-shift desk sergeant (Lawrence Tierney) - are the perfect bookend to the show. Just a simple “Hill Street” into the ringing phone and that was it. It left a lingering sense of closure and continuity, a reminder that even as we say goodbye to the characters, the world they inhabit doesn’t stop. Life goes on, as does Hill Street.

What’s amazing to me is how relevant the show still feels today. Hill Street Blues didn’t just innovate TV - it set the stage for dramas like NYPD Blue, The Wire and countless others that followed. It was a perfect storm of incredible writing, acting and direction - 98 Emmy nominations over its run are proof of that.
