It’s in the Bag

1979 signified the conclusion of a notable chapter in a Kiwi tradition: It’s in the Bag. This beloved traveling quiz show started on radio in 1954 with the late Selwyn Toogood, who had hosted it for 11 years and produced approximately 600 episodes.

A television adaptation was developed in 1973 and it became a staple of the screen a year later, with the inaugural episode of It’s in the Bag as a TV show recorded at the Dunedin Town Hall. It premiered on NZBC TV at 7.47pm on the evening of Saturday 11 May 1974.

Over its successful six-year run, a total of 132 episodes were produced and It’s in the Bag travelled to 45 towns throughout the country. The final episode - from the Dunedin Town Hall (where the series originally began) - was shown live to air on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 7.30pm on the evening of Tuesday 8 May 1979 and lasted a full hour.

Throughout its tenure It’s in the Bag had raised over $1 million for charities across New Zealand. Notably, the television version was broadcast in venues that the radio version had previously helped fund.

The show made a triumphant return to New Zealand television in 1985 with a one-off special celebrating 25 years of television. Selwyn Toogood once again hosted this hour-long special, which was recorded at the Regent Theatre in Dunedin and shown on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) at 8.30pm on the evening of Monday 10 June 198,5 with Tineke Stephenson - who co-hosted the show from 1975 to 1978 - serving as hostess.

When It’s in the Bag resumed as a regular series the next year, Toogood passed the hosting duties over to John Hawkesby, who was accompanied by Hilary Timmins as hostess. This revival debuted on TV One at 8pm on the evening of Monday 4 August 1986 and continued for five years until its conclusion in May 1990, with the premiere episode being recorded in Palmerston North.

The birth of What Now

What Now, a staple of New Zealand television, premiered on the morning of Saturday 9 May 1981. It was created by TVNZ producer Rex Simpson, who left the state broadcaster in 1988 to establish a children’s department for TV3, New Zealand’s first private television network. TV3 began broadcasting on the evening of Sunday 26 November 1989 with a ‘grand preview’.

What Now was originally a half hour show and screened on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 10am on a Saturday morning. The initial cast during the first year included Steve Hooper and four intermediate school aged children: Merryn, Richard, Oliver and Lucy, along with Murdoch the dog.

Rex Simpson explained that the core concept of What Now was to promote healthy leisure habits. The programme was inspired by the format of his earlier children’s show, How’s That?, which introduced children to fun and educational activities and had been hosted by Stu Dennison (formerly of Nice One) in 1979.

In the scripted segments Steve and the children interacted within a clubhouse set (recorded at TVNZ’s Christchurch studios). These scenes were mixed with pre-recorded games and activity ideas, as well as comedic sketches featuring Murray Slack. Initially portrayed by Jon Gadsby (of McPhail & Gadsby), the role of Slack was taken over by Tony Wahren a year later.

Today What Now holds the distinction of being the longest running children’s programme on New Zealand television.

Close to Home

On this day 50 years ago: Close to Home, New Zealand’s first locally produced serial drama, premiered on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 7pm on the evening of Monday 12 May 1975.

Set in a Wellington suburb and formatted as two half hour episodes per week in a style similar to Coronation Street, Close to Home originally focused on the challenges faced by the Hearte family.

Don Hearte (played by Tony Currie) and his wife Val (Helen Brew) had their three youngest children living at home. Their 19-year-old daughter Lyndsey (Sarah Delahunty) was training to be a nurse; 17-year-old Alan (Ian Gilmour), an apprentice electrician, dreamed of becoming a musician; and 15-year-old Caroline (Katie Brockie) was still attending school.

Other members of the Hearte family lived nearby.

Tom (John Bach) and his wife Vivian (Ilona Rodgers) lived just around the corner while the eldest daughter, Jane (Janice Finn), followed her mother’s tradition of having a large family. She and her husband Alex Fleming (Bill Stalker) had four children: Chris, Nicola, John and baby Katie.

Don’s sister, Dot Paget (Glenis Levestam), was busy caring for their father, Don Sr (Charles Walker), also known as Pop, as well as looking after her son Stephen (Anthony Ward) and her husband Ken (Harry Lavington). Pop was in poor health at the time and retirement was proving difficult for him, much like it would later be for Don. He was aging with little grace.

Don and Val lived in a large house with a couple of attached flats.

Val’s sister, Christine Lorvatz (Heather Lindsay), occupied one flat while Don’s oldest friend, Pete Wallace (Robin Dene), lived in the other, maintaining a cheerful but chaotic household.

Life initially appeared fairly stable. Don worked as a sports journalist for the local newspaper and Val was effectively managing a family construction business.

Rehearsals were held in a community hall in Avalon, located in the Hutt Valley about 20 minutes from Wellington’s city centre. The serial was recorded at the newly built Avalon Television Centre which was officially opened by the NZBC in March 1975 - just before the NZBC split into three separate corporations: Radio New Zealand (RNZ), Television One and Television Two. When TV One opened transmission for the first time on the afternoon of Tuesday 1 April that year, its headquarters were established at Avalon.

Studio 8, one of the largest studios at Avalon with a floor area of approximately 600m², featured sets arranged around the studio representing rooms in various characters’ homes as well as the bar of the local hotel. Although the frequent bar scenes drew criticism, it was the only location besides private homes in which scenes could be recorded without going on location (which was rarely done).

At its height in 1977, Close to Home attracted nearly one million viewers twice each week. The serial was co-created by Michael Anthony Noonan and Tony Isaac, who initially agreed to produce it only after securing approval for The Governor, a six-part series about Sir George Grey’s exploits.

This beloved family saga established a consistent place for local drama on television and helped develop the talents of New Zealand actors and production crews through the demands of regular production.

When Close to Home began it was shown at 7pm on a Monday and Tuesday evening. In 1982 the serial was moved to 7.30pm on the same nights - a slot it maintained until the screening of the final episode on the evening of Tuesday 30 August 1983. Over eight successful years, a total of 818 episodes were produced.
