New look Sundays on TV2

It’s Sunday, the 8th day of March 1998. The sun was setting and TV2 (now TVNZ 2) gearing up for a night of fresh, local entertainment, a real showcase of New Zealand talent and creativity. It was a night of premieres, new faces and familiar favourites, a line-up which truly reflected the Kiwi spirit.

The evening kicked off at 6pm with the introduction of “Toons on 2”, a new half hour cartoon slot. This wasn’t just any cartoon block, though. TV2 was rotating shows, giving us a taste of different animated worlds every three weeks.

On that particular Sunday we were treated to The Angry Beavers.

Now, The Angry Beavers was a quirky, hilarious show about Daggett and Norbert Beaver, two brothers forced to leave their family dam when their parents had another litter. It was a classic tale of sibling rivalry, filled with slapstick comedy and sharp wit. The show’s premise was relatable - who hasn’t argued with their siblings? - and the animation was vibrant and engaging.

The Angry Beavers was a perfect way to start the evening, appealing to Kiwi kids and adults with its clever humour. And knowing we’d see Cow and Chicken or Dexter’s Laboratory in the coming weeks added to the anticipation.

At 6.30pm the excitement built with the premiere of Small Talk, a brand new game show from Grundy Television.

Recorded in front of a live audience at Wellington’s Avalon Studios and hosted by the ever-energetic Jason Gunn, Small Talk was a delightful concept: adults trying to predict the answers children would give to a series of questions. It was a masterclass in understanding the wonderfully unpredictable minds of kids.

In that first episode we saw a charming group of children - Sam, Tom, Ravi, George, Alice, Beau, Shaun, Angus and Bradley - answering questions for the adult contestants Quentin, Irene and Randall. The dynamic between the adults and the children was pure gold. The adults would deliberate, trying to get into the minds of the kids while the children gave the most honest, unfiltered answers imaginable.

Small Talk was funny, heart-warming, and a real testament to the innocence and creativity of childhood. Jason Gunn, with his infectious enthusiasm, kept the show moving at a brisk pace and made it a perfect family viewing experience. It was a great concept and it was performed with such charm, although the format was based on the British game show of the same name with the late Ronnie Corbett (of The Two Ronnies and Sorry! fame) as host.

At 7pm a familiar favourite returned with a fresh face. The Great Kiwi Video Show was back for its fourth year, but this time with Fiona Anderson at the helm.

After four successful years hosting What Now, Fiona brought her warmth and relatability to the show which was essentially a half hour compilation of hilarious home videos from New Zealand and around the world. It was our own version of America’s Funniest Home Videos (though its predecessor, New Zealand’s Funniest Home Videos ran from 1990-91 and 1993 respectively with Ian Taylor, the late Kerry Smith and Jason Gunn as successive hosts) and it never failed to deliver laughs. The show was a testament to the power of the home video camera, capturing those unexpected, candid moments which make life so entertaining.

From clumsy pets to hilarious mishaps, The Great Kiwi Video Show was a guaranteed mood booster. Fiona Anderson’s natural charm and humour made her a perfect fit for the show, and she quickly won over viewers. The production quality was solid and the selection of videos, chosen at random by the producers, was consistently funny. It was a simple concept but it worked brilliantly.

Then came the new local content, kicking off at 7.30pm with Trading Places.

Hosted by Liane Clarke, Trading Places was a fascinating social experiment. Two New Zealanders from completely different walks of life would swap jobs for a day, giving them a unique glimpse into each other’s worlds. It was a concept which resonated with the Kiwi spirit of ‘giving it a go’ and appreciating the diversity of our country.

The first episode featured a model and a dairy farmer, as well as a naval diver and a deliverer of singing telegrams. The contrast between these professions was striking. The model found herself milking cows and mucking out stables while the dairy farmer experienced the glitz and glamour of a photoshoot. The naval diver tried his hand at delivering singing telegrams, while the singing telegram deliverer faced the challenges of diving.

Trading Places was a brilliant concept and it was fascinating to see how people adapted to such different environments. Liane Clarke, with her experience from The Great Kiwi Video Show and various other programmes (Fair Go, Really Living), was a natural and engaging host, guiding us through these unique experiences with warmth and curiosity.

Following Trading Places at 8pm was Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?, another new local production.

Hosted by the effervescent Suzanne Paul with Varick Neilson as the chef and Anthony Ray Parker as the chauffeur, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? was the show that surprised unsuspecting New Zealand families with a celebrity guest for dinner. It was a heart-warming and entertaining concept, combining the excitement of a surprise with the intimacy of a family meal.

In the first episode, the May family were surprised by rugby legends Tana Umaga and Grant Fox. Imagine the shock and delight of having two of New Zealand’s sporting heroes walk through your door!

Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner? captured the genuine reactions of the family, the awkwardness and excitement of meeting a celebrity and the warmth of sharing a meal together. Suzanne Paul’s bubbly personality was perfect for the show and she created a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Varick Neilson’s culinary skills ensured a delicious meal and Anthony Ray Parker’s chauffeur role added a touch of glamour. It was a feel good show which celebrated the everyday Kiwi family and the excitement of celebrity encounters.

Finally, TV2 presented its Sunday premiere movie, Outbreak, at 8.30pm. This 1995 action thriller (starring Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo and Morgan Freeman) provided a dramatic and suspenseful end to the evening. The film’s gripping storyline and star-studded cast made it a perfect choice for a Sunday night movie.

Looking back, that evening on TV2 was a testament to the power of local content. It was a line-up that celebrated Kiwi talent, humour and diversity. It was a reminder of a time when television was a shared experience, a way for families to come together and enjoy a night of entertainment.

More to come in Part 2.

The amount of stuff on TV3 about to be recycled out in that 1993 listing is crazy. Practically the whole morning schedule.

@LiamP In the first weekend of April 1993, TV3 (now Three) revamped its Sunday morning schedule and opened transmission at 6.30am with Music and the Spoken Word, a half hour weekly programme with performances of music by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (now the Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square) - often accompanied by the Salt Lake Tabernacle organ and the Orchestra at Temple Square. The programme also included spiritual messages and passages related to a specific episode’s theme (the ‘spoken word’), presented by Lloyd Newell. (Derrick Porter is the new host and has been delivering the ‘spoken word’ within the programme since 2024.)

Later that year, Music and the Spoken Word was followed at 7am by Swordfish, an Australian religious programme for teenagers and young adults; it was produced by Wesley Mission, a name used by three independent Uniting Church groups which are a part of the Uniting Missions Network of UnitingCare Australia. And then, there was This Week with David Brinkley (from ABC America) at 7.30am.

The end of the NZBC and Taggart

The New Zealand Broadcasting Corporation (NZBC), which had been the monolithic entity overseeing radio and television broadcasting in the country since its foundation in 1962, was about to be dismantled. The government’s decision to break up the NZBC into three separate state owned corporations - Television One, Television Two and Radio New Zealand (RNZ) - signalled a significant shift in the nation’s media landscape.

Monday 31 March 1975 was the NZBC’s final day and the pilot for a proposed local drama series, known as Taggart, screened at 8.36pm that evening. Sadly, the series never materialised, leaving this pilot as a solitary testament to what might have been.

Taggart, as the last drama to be produced by the NZBC, was conceived as a gritty, realistic police drama set in Auckland, a city undergoing rapid change in the 1970s. The pilot, known as “We Don’t Take Them Like That Anymore” and written by Keith Aberdein, presented a scenario which resonated with the social complexities of the time. The description was succinct yet compelling:

“Taggart finds a hit-and-run case is anything but routine. When the victim is the nephew of a senior member of the Uniform Branch. Solve a crime or prevent a vendetta - or both. These are Taggart’s choices.”

This synopsis hints at a narrative rich with tension, moral ambiguity and the potential for exploring the internal dynamics of the police force. The collision of personal and professional obligations, the threat of a vendetta and the pressure to deliver justice within a system often fraught with internal politics - these are timeless themes that continue to captivate audiences.

The title role of Detective Inspector Taggart was portrayed by the late Bill Johnson. Johnson, a legend in New Zealand acting, brought a gravitas and intensity to the role, hinting at a complex and determined character. His presence alone would have been a major draw for viewers.

Ian Mune - another stalwart of New Zealand film, television and theatre - played the role of Detective Senior Sergeant Denby, Taggart’s right-hand man. Mune’s performance likely added a layer of depth and nuance to the dynamic between the two detectives.

The cast also featured Louise Pajo as policewoman Wendy Johns, a character that hinted at the evolving role of women in the police force. And then there was the late Eddie Hegan, a renowned entertainer and vaudeville performer, who took on the role of Senior Sergeant Walker. Hegan’s inclusion added an intriguing dimension to the cast, blending dramatic and entertainment talent.

Bryan Easte served as the producer and ensured the production’s smooth execution while Donald Hope-Evans directed the pilot, bringing his vision to life on screen.

Notably, the pilot also featured Laurie Dee, a renowned New Zealand singer and entertainer, in his first dramatic role. This casting choice suggests an attempt to broaden the show’s appeal, drawing in viewers who were familiar with Dee’s musical performances.

The pilot’s significance extends beyond its status as the last NZBC drama. It represents a moment of transition in New Zealand television history, a bridge between the unified NZBC and the decentralised landscape of the new state owned corporations. It also represents a local attempt at producing a police drama, something that at the time was not common.

The fact that Taggart was filmed in colour adds another layer of historical significance. Colour television, which was first introduced in October 1973, was still relatively new in New Zealand and the pilot’s use of this technology underscores the NZBC’s commitment to innovation and progress.

Unfortunately, Taggart remains a lost treasure. While the pilot screened, it did not lead to a full series. The reasons for this remain shrouded in speculation. It is possible that the restructuring of the NZBC played a role, with the new corporations focusing on establishing their own identities and programming.

The absence of Taggart from the archives is a significant loss. The pilot represents a unique moment in New Zealand television history, a glimpse into a potential series which could have contributed significantly to the nation’s cultural landscape.

The end of regional news

From 1970 until 1975, the NZBC TV network served regional audiences with dedicated news magazine programmes. These programmes offered a unique blend of local news, features and entertainment, reflecting the diverse communities they served. The regional programmes were:

  • This Day/Look North (Auckland): Originally titled This Day, it was renamed Look North in 1974. This programme covered the vast upper North Island region, encompassing Auckland, Northland, Waikato and the Bay of Plenty. It provided a vital connection between urban and rural communities, showcasing the unique stories and issues of the region.

  • Newsview (Wellington): Serving the lower North Island (Wellington [including the Kapiti Coast and the Wairarapa], Manawatu, Whanganui, Gisborne, Hawke’s Bay and Taranaki), the upper South Island (Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough) and the West Coast, Newsview bridged the gap between diverse communities, highlighting the shared experiences and unique challenges of this geographically expansive region.

  • The South Tonight (Christchurch & Dunedin): This programme was split into two distinct editions, one for Christchurch (covering the Canterbury region) and another for Dunedin (covering Otago and Southland). This format allowed for focused coverage of the specific interests and concerns of each region.

These programmes were more than just standard news bulletins; they were windows into the daily lives of New Zealanders across the country. They provided a platform for local voices, showcasing the unique character and stories of each region.

The final editions were shown at 7.20pm on the evening of Monday 31 March 1975. As the NZBC’s final day drew to a close, the programmes took on a nostalgic and often humorous tone, reflecting the bittersweet nature of the moment.

Take Dunedin’s The South Tonight. Derek Payne, a familiar face from the programme’s past, returned to anchor the final edition. A ‘best of’ compilation, the programme emphasised humour, often with a Python-esque flair. Notable segments included Kevin Ramshaw’s Sam Spade-style parody of a private eye hunting Noddy, Payne’s walk with an imaginary dog, a humorous search for news in Invercargill and an extended blooper reel. Even a report on strippers was included, for a bit of spice.

The other regional programmes also took on a nostalgic feel, as they said their goodbyes.

These final editions served as a farewell to an era of regional broadcasting, a moment of reflection on the programmes’ contributions to their respective communities.

The establishment of TV One on Tuesday 1 April 1975 marked a significant shift in the structure and focus of New Zealand television news. The early evening news, previously shown at 7pm, was moved to 6.30pm and signalled a move towards a more streamlined and nationally focused news format, with Dougal Stevenson and Bill McCarthy sharing the role of sole anchor.

The regional news magazines were discontinued and replaced by a local opt-out of approximately seven minutes within the main evening bulletin, i.e. regional news summaries originating from Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin respectively… This change reflected a desire to consolidate resources and provide a more unified national news service.

News at Six

News at Six was launched by TVNZ on the evening of Monday 30 March 1981 to replace a shorter, five minute early news bulletin at 5.55pm on TV2 (now TVNZ 2), although the shorter bulletin continued on weekends at that time.

TVNZ’s flagship evening news bulletin, which was shown at 6.30pm on TV One (now TVNZ 1), was preceded on TV2 at 6pm by News at Six each night, Monday to Friday; it was divided into two parts.

Part one of the half hour bulletin covered the important national and international news of the day, drawing on the resources of the TVNZ newsroom and global news partners via satellite, while part two showcased selected items from the four regional programmes: Top Half (Auckland), Today Tonight (Wellington), The Mainland Touch (Christchurch) and The South Tonight (Dunedin). The Friday edition of News at Six featured a preview of the upcoming weekend’s sport.
