When Eastenders first arrived in Aotearoa it was huge. We still had only two TV channels back then and all New Zealanders were into Coronation street. Well let me clarify that. If you didn’t watch it, you certainly knew about it. Because if you didn’t watch it at least someone in your family or your circle of friends or multiple people from your workplace watched it. Everyone was well aware of what was going on with Coronation Street. And then we caught word of this new programme.

There was a real buzz about Eastenders even before it started. I remember watching 7.30pm on the evening of Friday 30 August 1985. It was an absolute TV event.

I remember buying the Eastenders theme 7 inch single. A seismic shift was happening. A new generation was watching the racier, fast moving Eastenders. Suddenly the nation was obsessed with Nick and Dot.

Aotearoa changed forever.

I was amazed to come to Australia in 1988 and no one had even heard of it.

I wished EastEnders 40th anniversary was aired on FTA TV in both Australia and New Zealand because EastEnders have not aired FTA in NZ since May 2009 and Australia since July 1991, it was one of my Mum and I favourite soaps alongside Coronation Street which it still airs on TVNZ 1 nowadays

are these the same people who hadn’t heard of any British comedy other than Fawlty Towers?

Australians.

Uneducated. Ill-informed.

The Mole had been working very hard all the morning, spring- cleaning his little home.

We all learnt this when I went to Middleton Grange at Otautahi. It was drummed into us. I was shocked to come to Queensland and realise that Australian kids had no such education.
