With Olly ‘keep cool till after school’ Ohlson out of CHTV3 CHCH… 1981 and Aotearoa only had one official language and here was Olly using two alternate languages on TV which both went on to become official languages. Groundbreaking stuff, well done Olly.

Slight point of clarification, this match was in Dunedin - and it was washed out without a ball being bowled on day three (with no play possible on days one and two).

An unofficial one-day international was played on what would have been day four (21st Dec) and it was broadcast on TV1.

Just corrected the mistake.

Certainly would have been watching RTR… what was #1? I’m guessing something from the UK…

According to the official NZ charts, the #1 of the last available chart of the year (15/12/1985, I assume RTR would be working from that) was cult Kiwi new wave band Peking Man with their hit “Room That Echoes”.

Nice one. Margaret Urlich. Would have been getting a spin on Foveaux.

Do you have the listings for December 23, 2002 when TVNZ aired Breakfast, Midday and Late Edition over the summer holiday period?

No, I haven’t… due to a shortage of time. In the meantime, I have the listings for 23 December 1999 instead.

Famously had two videos. Not a huge hit in Aotearoa, released as a follow-up to Black Velvet.

Unlike in Australia, where it was released first and was a hit.

Welcome 1990 Haere Mai

As the decade of the 1980s concluded, TVNZ played host to Welcome 1990 Haere Mai, a comprehensive 24 hour event celebrating New Zealand’s film, music, sport, television and noteworthy events. This special presentation began at 11.45pm on New Year’s Eve 1989 on TV One (now TVNZ 1) and commenced with live coverage of the New Year’s arrival at midnight from Bastion Point in Auckland, hosted by the late Peter Sinclair and Michele A’Court.

Immediately after, at 12.15am, two beloved New Zealand films, Don’t Let It Get You (1966) and the sound version of Rewi’s Last Stand (1940), were shown. Further programmes included:

At 2.30am, Te Māori - Te Hokinga Mai: The Return Home was broadcast. This hour-long presentation of music and dance honoured the significance of the Te Māori exhibition, celebrating its return to New Zealand and the inauguration of the Auckland display. It was first shown on TVNZ in 1988.

The programme at 3.30am, C’mon In: The Music’s In, offered a nostalgic look back at New Zealand pop music from the 1960s and early 1970s.

Bubbles and Speak was shown at 4.30am, presenting various clips from television dramas and soaps screened on TVNZ over the years, accompanied by commentary from Peter Hawes.

At 5.15am Roger Gascoigne and Ian Johnstone greeted viewers with Ata Mārie - Good Morning 1990 on New Year’s Day.

Following at 5.35am was Te Urunga o te Rā: The Resting Place of the Sun, a ceremony conducted on Mount Hikurangi and near the Waiapu River’s mouth to welcome the sunrise on New Year’s Day, 1990.

Comedy excerpts from TVNZ’s past sitcoms comprised the 6am programme, Jest for Laughs, also featuring commentary by Peter Hawes.

At 7am Ūkaipō: Te Whenua featured Māori women discussing the cultural significance of the placenta, its burial and practices surrounding umbilical cord cutting and breastfeeding. English subtitles were provided.

John Hawkesby and Natalie Brunt presented Fifteen Decades at 7.30am, a news-style programme reviewing 150 years of New Zealand news and significant events.

Flash Back, shown at 8.30am, showcased clips from TVNZ children’s programmes from the 1970s and 1980s, incorporating comedy sketches and commentary by Alasdair Kincaid, known as Frank Flash from What Now.

A compilation of archival footage and black and white photographs documenting New Zealanders’ involvement in sporting events throughout the century was shown at 9am in “A Big Little Sporting Country.”

Te Tūtakitanga: The Meeting, which was shown as a live telecast from 10am, documented the gathering of tall ships in Gisborne on 1 January 1990. This event commemorated Captain Cook’s arrival in New Zealand and included five tall ships, three Māori canoes (waka) and a Māori cultural performance group.

From 11am until 6pm Reflections offered a nostalgic look at pivotal moments shaping New Zealand history, particularly those influenced by television. This programme featured presentations from the late Peter Sinclair, Angela D’Audney and Gordon McLauchlan, and included reports from the 1990 Official Projects across the country, plus live coverage of the 1990 Auckland Cup races from Ellerslie: the Waste Management Handicap (at 2.30pm), the 1990 DB Draught Auckland Cup (at 3.05pm), the Louisiana Downs Trophy Sprint (at 3.45pm), the Sir Tristram Railway (at 4.25pm) and the Armourguard Plate (at 5.05pm).

Following a half hour break for One Network News (at 6pm) with Tom Bradley, Children in Charge screened at 6.30pm. This half hour programme featured excerpts from drama series designed for young audiences but also appealing to adults, with commentary by Michele A’Court.

After a half hour break for Sale of the Century at 7pm, Spirit of 1990 ran from 7.30-10.30pm. This three hour live open air concert was broadcast live from Bastion Point in Auckland and celebrated the dawn of the 1990s, showcasing New Zealand talent and including satellite links from Australia, Russia, Canada and Japan, as well as pre-recorded messages from New Zealanders unable to attend. John Hawkesby, Larnie Gifford and Temuera Morrison introduced the concert.

Following a 10 minute break for the late night edition of One Network News at 10.30pm, Welcome 1990 Haere Mai - Highlights screened at 10.40pm. This was a collection of short clips from programmes shown throughout New Year’s Day 1990.

To conclude New Year’s Day 1990 transmission, TV One screened the 1985 sci-fi drama The Quiet Earth (at 10.50pm) before closing down at 12.20am. The Quiet Earth, directed by the late Geoff Murphy, tells the story of a scientist (played by the late Bruno Lawrence) who seemingly finds himself the only person left on Earth.

Music parties on Channel 2 & TV3

While TV One broadcast the 24-hour event Welcome 1990 Haere Mai, Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) opted for a lively alternative: a continuous music programme titled “And Finally This” to celebrate the arrival of the 1990s in style.

And Finally This screened at 11.45pm on New Year’s Eve 1989 with hosts Debbie Harwood, Robert Rakete, and Crispy Fresh (Christiaan Ercolano) introducing a selection of 1980s party music videos, encompassing a diverse range from Brothers Johnson’s “Stomp” to AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell”. Reflecting its broad appeal, the programme even featured requested videos from a diverse group including Kylie Minogue, John Hawkesby, the models from Sale of the Century and businessman Bob Jones.

Concurrently, on TV3, New Zealand’s first privately owned television network, a special midnight edition of its Saturday morning music show, Shakedown, was shown, aptly named the Shakedown of the Decade. This two-hour special presented a retrospective of the music scene from 1980 to 1989, featuring videos from artists such as U2, Guns N’ Roses, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Dave Dobbyn and Crowded House, among others.
