TV Censored Bloopers ‘98

In the annals of television history, few shows have captured the simple joy of human error and spontaneous comedy like TV’s Bloopers & Practical Jokes.

Launched by the American NBC network in 1984, this show not only entertained but also became a cultural phenomenon, showcasing the lighter side of television production where celebrities and ordinary folk alike were subject to the whims of fate and the mischievous pranks orchestrated by the show’s producers.

TV’s Bloopers & Practical Jokes was hosted by Dick Clark, an established TV personality known for American Bandstand, and Ed McMahon, famous for his work with Johnny Carson on The Tonight Show. Although the TV legends passed away some years ago, they introduced America to a new kind of television experience where the focus was not on scripted content but on the unscripted, often hilarious mistakes which occur behind the scenes.

The show’s premise was straightforward yet endlessly amusing: it compiled outtakes from movies, television shows and commercials, interspersed with practical jokes played on unsuspecting celebrities. These bloopers ranged from flubbed lines to physical mishaps, providing a rare peek into the fallibility of even the most polished stars. The practical jokes, on the other hand, were often elaborate setups which required meticulous planning, turning everyday scenarios into theatrical spectacles of surprise.

Despite its popularity, TV’s Bloopers & Practical Jokes was discontinued in 1986. However, the allure of bloopers and practical humour was too strong to keep off air for long. NBC continued to broadcast various Bloopers specials, showing the format’s sustained appeal.

The show saw a revival in 1991 as Super Bloopers & New Practical Jokes, and later in 1998, it transformed into TV Censored Bloopers ‘98 with Dick Clark returning alongside new co-host Suzanne Whang.

The charm of TV Censored Bloopers ‘98, however, was not confined to the US shores.

In New Zealand, the show found a unique expression when TV3 (now Three) screened its version at 7.30pm on a Wednesday night. Here, it was presented by Lorae Parry and Pinky Agnew, who humorously impersonated then-Opposition Leader Helen Clark (Labour) and then-Prime Minister Jenny Shipley (National) as seen in the 1997/98 revival of the TVNZ political satire/sketch show, McPhail & Gadsby. This localised version not only brought international bloopers to Kiwi audiences but also included local blunders, making the show a cultural staple.

The production of this New Zealand version was handled by Denis Spencer Productions, a Wellington-based company known for its creative television content. Denis Spencer, an Australian producer with years of experience in the television industry, had previously brought shows like Showcase and McDonald’s Young Entertainers to us as New Zealanders through TVNZ.

This venture into adapting an US format for the New Zealand market exemplified the global influence of the blooper genre and the universal appeal of laughter.

Movies, rugby and league

On the evening of Saturday 18 November 1989, TV One (now TVNZ 1) presented an unforgettable evening which would resonate within the hearts of sports fans for years to come. In an intriguing blend of cinema and live sport, TV One not only entertained its audience but also showcased significant events in the world of sport which were emblematic of the era.

The evening began in the late hours of Saturday when, instead of closing down for the night, TV One decided to entertain its viewers with two pivotal films starring the iconic British actor, Michael Caine. These were preceded by live coverage from Addington Raceway in Christchurch of the 1989 Dominion Handicap (at 8.35pm; won by Tobago), the 1983 film Without a Trace (at 8.40pm), a 10 minute spot for the late night edition of the newly rebranded One Network News (at 10.55pm; formerly the Network News) and a new programme called At the Movies (at 11.05pm) which consisted of movie news and reviews with Nicholas Reid, Rachel Lang and the late Murray “Muzza” Inglis as hosts.

The first feature, Get Carter (at 11.35pm), is a gritty 1971 British gangster film revolving around Jack Carter, a hardened London criminal who embarks on a dark journey to avenge his brother’s untimely death. Characterised by its intense narrative and memorable performances, Get Carter exemplified the quintessential British crime drama and showcased Caine at his best.

Following this cinematic journey, TV One transported its audience into the realm of comedy and capers with the screening of Silver Bears at 1.35am in the early hours of Sunday morning. Released in 1978, this British comedy crime thriller stars Caine as “Doc” Fletcher, an accountant who finds himself embroiled in a dramatic rivalry over a Swiss bank and a humorous yet thrilling plot was a departure from the hard edged violence of Get Carter, perfectly highlighting Caine’s versatility as an actor.

As the clock ticked past the witching hour, TV One seamlessly transitioned from the world of cinema to live sport. This artistic decisition was not merely a filler but a ‘well thought out’ strategy to engage those who were likely to stay awake for the subsequent event - the Northern Hemisphere test match between the All Blacks and Ireland. Live from Lansdowne Road in Dublin via satellite, the match was scheduled to kick off at approximately 3.30am NZT.

For many of us as Kiwis, rugby is not just a sport; it’s an integral part of our cultural identity. Thus, the timing of the match became a thrill for rugby fans keen to catch the last significant international rugby clash of the 1980s. In the historical early hours of Sunday morning, the All Blacks not only showcased their iconic black jerseys but also displayed remarkable skill on the pitch, finishing the match with a solid victory over the Irish, concluding with a score of 23-6.

After the rugby celebration, viewers were initially treated to the anticipation of another sporting event which was the first international rugby league test between the Kiwis and France. The match, held at Stade d’Albert Domec in Carcassonne, was scheduled to be shown as a delayed telecast from 5.30am NZT, but the whims of nature had other plans. Heavy rain led to the postponement of the league test until the early hours of Monday morning (NZT).

In a deft move to retain viewer interest and excitement, TV One quickly pivoted to presenting highlights from a previous clash between the Kiwis and Great Britain. Such adaptability is a testament to TVNZ’s commitment to ensuring its audience during a seemingly unpredictable night. After the league highlights, a full replay of the All Blacks v Ireland match was shown on TV One at approximately 6.45am.

Eventually, when the league test was played, the Kiwis triumphed over the French with a narrow victory of 16-14, marking a significant milestone in New Zealand rugby league history. The closeness of the score reflected the tension and competitiveness which defined the match, solidifying the Kiwis’ position as one of the foremost teams in rugby league.

McPhail & Gadsby - the end of an era

If you are a fan of Kiwi comedy then the phrase “Jeez Wayne” likely rings a bell.

It emerged from the iconic New Zealand sketch comedy show, A Week of It , which was produced by and shown on South Pacific Television (SPTV) from 1977 to 1979. This show was a launching pad for a new wave of humour which would soon evolve into the country’s longest-running sketch series - McPhail & Gadsby. With its debut in 1980, the comedic duo of David McPhail and Jon Gadsby crafted a cultural phenomenon whose influence still echoes today.

The merger of TV One and SPTV into TVNZ in 1980 set the stage for a new era in New Zealand entertainment. McPhail and Gadsby had gained recognition through their comedic work and they carried that momentum into the creation of their new series.

Initially, McPhail & Gadsby consisted of seven hour-long programmes and each of which was dedicated to a single topic - from religion and sex to medicine, money, crime, death and war. This thematic approach allowed the writers to delve deep into sensitive subjects through songs and sketches and use humour to explore complex societal issues.

Within the next year, however, the show underwent a significant transformation. The rigid thematic structure was abandoned in favour of a more varied and spontaneous format.

The result was a steady flow of political satire, parody and impersonations of well known public figures, most notably the the Prime Minister, (Sir) Robert Muldoon. As the political landscape of New Zealand shifted, so too did the content of the programme, making it a topical and relevant commentary on contemporary issues.

Produced in-house by TVNZ at its Christchurch studios, McPhail & Gadsby became a labour of love for its cast and crew. But when the show first started, it was recorded in front of a live audience at the Christchurch Town Hall.

As producer/director John Lye recalls, the production schedule was demanding. Each year the team produced two series of seven episodes, along with several specials. This required a creativity and stamina which would push the boundaries of traditional television production. Adding to the creative force was AK Grant, a third writer who worked closely with McPhail and Gadsby by contributing significantly to the show’s success.

Despite the challenges, the show flourished. It was acclaimed for its sharp wit and keen perspective on societal and political issues. It received numerous accolades over the years, including the award for “Best Entertainment Programme” at the Feltex Television Awards in 1983 and 1985. Moreover, it garnered a nomination for “Best Entertainment Programme” at the 1986 Gofta Awards, solidifying its status as a staple of Kiwi television.

McPhail & Gadsby was not just a television show; it was a cultural phenomenon which resonated with us as New Zealanders. The show’s incisive humour allowed it to address pressing social issues while providing an escape from the humdrum of daily life. Viewers looked forward to its weekly episodes, anticipating the sharp political satire and the playful banter of McPhail and Gadsby. Each episode served not only as entertainment but also as a platform for dialogue, encouraging New Zealanders to reflect on their society with a sense of humour.

The comedic duo excelled at impersonation, breathing life into various public figures with their spot-on caricatures. McPhail’s portrayal of Prime Minister Muldoon, in particular, became legendary. By turning political figures into subjects of humour, they invited us as Kiwis to engage with the political discourse of the time. This commitment to blending comedy with social commentary helped cement McPhail & Gadsby as a pioneer of political satire in New Zealand.

After a successful seven year run, the final episode of McPhail & Gadsby screened on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 9pm on the evening of Monday 22 November 1987. The farewell was bittersweet, marking the end of an era in New Zealand comedy. The impact of the show, however, would live on, influencing future generations of comedians and sketch artists in New Zealand and beyond.

Fast forward a decade, in 1997, McPhail & Gadsby saw a revival, albeit under the new title “McPhail Gadsby” and produced by South Pacific Pictures, the same company behind popular dramas like Shortland Street, but recorded at Wellington’s Avalon Studios just hours before transmission. Although the production style shifted to an ‘as live’ format, the show was still rooted in the comedic spirit which made it popular in the first place. It was briefly taken under the helm of Denis Spencer Productions, reverting to its original title in 1998. However, the revival did not achieve the same level of acclaim or cultural impact as the original series.

Though David McPhail, Jon Gadsby and AK Grant are no longer with us, the legacy of their work endures. They paved the way for future generations of comedians who draw inspiration from their commitment to satire, humour and social commentary. Moreover, shows like McPhail & Gadsby opened the door for more diverse comedic expressions in New Zealand.

In the years following their final show, the impact of McPhail & Gadsby continued to be felt across the landscape of New Zealand television. The spirit of boundary pushing comedy remains alive and many of the country’s contemporary comedians owe a debt of gratitude to their pioneering efforts.

The catchphrase “Jeez Wayne” may serve as an informal reminder of a comedic era long past, but it also encapsulates a unique moment in New Zealand’s television history - a time when McPhail and Gadsby brought laughter, reflection and a sense of humour to the complexities of everyday life. Their contributions to New Zealand comedy will not be forgotten and their innovative spirit will continue to inspire comedians for generations to come.

A historical moment for NZ TV

The world of television, like the ever evolving cultural landscape of the 1980s, experienced a landmark moment over a remarkable weekend in New Zealand - the weekend of 25-26 November 1989. It was a time when music, sport and the launch of a new network converged to shape the viewing habits of us as Kiwis.

The Channel 2 Coca-Cola Music Weekend
Kicking off at 10pm on the evening of Friday 24 November, Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) began the Channel 2 Coca-Cola Music Weekend, a daring venture which promised ‘46 hours of wall to wall music, movies, concerts, interviews… the lot’.

Sponsored by Coca-Cola, this ambitious venture embraced a wide variety of musical genres and showcased local and international icons. High-profile international artists including INXS, David Bowie, U2, Sting and Fleetwood Mac captivated viewers with their performances.

However, the offering was not limited to mainstream chart-toppers. The weekend also embraced New Zealand’s burgeoning music scene, spotlighting Flying Nun records and the innovative sounds of Pagan. Additionally, this musical extravaganza featured notable films like The Last Waltz (1978) and The Blues Brothers (1980), creating a rich tapestry of entertainment which catered for diverse audiences.

But perhaps the most ground-breaking aspect of this event was its status as New Zealand television’s first stereo broadcast. Prior to this, stereo television was still a novelty for many viewers. Auckland became the first region to receive Channel 2 in NICAM stereo, paving the way for a more immersive audio experience. While the rest of the nation would have to wait for further rollout of NICAM until the mid-1990s, or until 2001 for some regions like Southland, this weekend marked a significant leap forward in broadcasting technology.

Cricket and rugby on TV One
Simultaneously, TV One (now TVNZ 1) captured the anticipation of sports fans with live coverage from the WACA Ground in Perth of the international cricket test between Australia and New Zealand.

The coverage, starting at around 4pm NZT, featured intermittent breaks for One Network News (at 6pm) and various other programmes like It’s in the Bag (Saturday at 6.30pm), Frontline (Sunday at 6.30pm) and Supersense (Sunday at 7pm) and even spanned the finale of the BBC drama, Howards’ Way (Sunday at 8.40pm).

Despite the interrupted coverage, this attendance to sport demonstrated TV One’s commitment to providing top-notch cricket coverage. Crucially, this emphasis on cricket captured the keen sporting spirit of New Zealand, even amid the festive atmosphere of the Coca-Cola Music Weekend on Channel 2.

For rugby aficionados, the excitement reached a crescendo in the early hours of Sunday 26 November when TV One provided live coverage of the All Blacks’ much-anticipated clash against the Barbarians at Twickenham in London. This was no ordinary match; the All Blacks were on a historic tour, having remained unbeaten in all 14 matches they played - an impressive feat which contributed to the excitement.

The match, which started at 3am NZT, ended with a triumphant score of 21-10 in favour of the All Blacks. The exhilarating performance not only bolstered national pride but also showcased rugby’s significant role in the country’s culture.

The launch of TV3
The weekend culminated in a ground-breaking moment for New Zealand television. After much anticipation, the country witnessed the launch of its first private television network, TV3 (now Three).

At 8pm on the evening of Sunday 26 November, TV3 kicked off with a two-hour grand preview meant to showcase its programme line-up. This gala affair was filled with celebrity interviews, musical performances and personality profiles which heralded a new era in broadcasting diversification.

As the country’s first private network - officially opened by the late Sir Paul Reeves, the Governor-General of New Zealand at the time - TV3 represented a significant shift in the media landscape, ushering in an era of competition and variety in programming. This marked not only an expansion of choices for viewers but also illustrated the growing demands for alternatives to the state-owned TVNZ.

The first scheduled programme on TV3 was the Early Bird Show, set to screen at 7am the following morning, featuring beloved puppet characters like Russell Rooster and Kiri Kea, coupled with half hourly news updates presented by Joanna Paul. The launch was not just about another station going on air; it was a cultural reset which initiated a blossoming of local television production and programming.

In retrospect, the weekend of 25-26 November 1989 stands out as a pivotal period in New Zealand television history. It was marked by an innovative music extravaganza on Channel 2, competitive international sport on TV One and the dawn of a new broadcasting era with the launch of TV3. Together, these events showcased the vibrant culture of New Zealand in a way which engaged us as New Zealanders and altered our viewing experiences forever.

This weekend did not merely entertain; it served as a reflection of the country’s artistic and athletic achievements while paving the way for a diversified future in television broadcasting. As we look back, we see how this particular weekend encapsulated not just a moment in time, but a turning point in the way Kiwis consumed media, influencing the generations that followed.

Mount Erebus

On the morning of 28 November 1979, Air New Zealand Flight TE901 took off from Mangere Airport in Auckland for an 11-hour sightseeing trip to Antarctica. At 12.49pm (NZT), the aircraft collided with the lower slopes of Mount Erebus, resulting in the deaths of all 257 passengers and crew. This tragedy marked the worst civil disaster in New Zealand’s history.

Air New Zealand had begun sightseeing flights from Auckland to Antarctica in 1977. Passengers relished low-altitude views of the Ross Dependency before the plane returned to Auckland via Christchurch. The flights consistently ran without incident and were well received by New Zealanders and tourists.

When Flight TE901 did not arrive in Christchurch as scheduled, authorities began to fear the worst. It became apparent that if the plane was still in the air, it would soon exhaust its fuel supply. Search and rescue missions commenced in Antarctica, but it wasn’t until midnight (NZT) that rescuers discovered wreckage on the lower slopes of Mount Erebus. Confirmation of the lack of survivors came the following day.

Over 60 professionals and volunteers faced the challenging task of recovering bodies from the crevasse-filled area and examining the wreckage to ascertain the cause of the incident. This process extended over several weeks. Against significant odds, all bodies were recovered and, ultimately, 214 were identified. An investigation into the air accident began, utilising data from the aircraft’s flight recorders and other sources.

A heated debate ensued regarding who was responsible for the crash. The chief air accident inspector blamed pilot error, while Justice Peter Mahon’s Royal Commission of Inquiry attributed responsibility to Air New Zealand and its systems. There were clearly multiple factors at play, but determining which was most significant, and whether the pilots or the airline bore ultimate accountability, remains a subject of intense discussion.

TV One (now TVNZ 1) and South Pacific Television (SPTV; now TVNZ 2) provided extensive coverage of the Mount Erebus disaster in their news bulletins. The news on TV One was normally shown at 6.30pm and 9.30pm respectively while SPTV’s bulletins, known as News at Six and News at Ten respectively, screened at 6pm and 10pm as the names suggested.

The day following the tragedy, TV One opened transmission at noon with a brief news update. Following that, an on-duty continuity announcer welcomed viewers to another day’s viewing on TV One and paid tribute to the 257 passengers and crew who lost their lives.

Coro Nation

9 December 2000 marked a significant milestone for Coronation Street, the longest running soap in television history, as it celebrated 40 years on air.

To commemorate this occasion TVNZ produced a one-off special, Coro Nation, which screened on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 8.30pm on the evening of Wednesday 6 December. Hosted by renowned broadcaster and lifelong Coronation Street fan Mike Hosking, this documentary explored the enduring love affair between New Zealanders and the iconic British soap.

Coro Nation was a heartwarming tribute to the dedicated fans who had grown up with Coronation Street. The special featured a diverse group of Kiwi fans, each sharing their unique perspectives on why the show had become an integral part of their lives. From nostalgic memories of watching the show with family and friends to the impact of the soap’s storylines on their own lives, these fans demonstrated the profound influence Coronation Street had on New Zealand’s popular culture.

The documentary also delved into New Zealand’s history with Coronation Street, highlighting the show’s introduction to the country in June 1964 and its subsequent rise to become a beloved national institution. Through archival footage and interviews with television executives, Coro Nation provided a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at the show’s broadcast history in New Zealand.

One of the most delightful aspects of Coro Nation was the opportunity to see some of Coronation Street’s most iconic stars sharing their love for New Zealand. The special featured interviews with several cast members, who spoke fondly of their experiences visiting the country and meeting their Kiwi fans. These interviews added a touching personal dimension to the documentary, underscoring the deep affection between the show’s stars and their New Zealand audience.

Throughout Coro Nation, Mike Hosking’s enthusiasm and warmth shone through, making the special feel like a celebratory gathering of friends. As a lifelong Coronation Street fan himself, Hosking brought a depth of knowledge and understanding to the documentary.

@PaddyTePou any idea when TV1 started BBC World overnights?

Funny to me that MASH is being rerun late night/early morning here then would end up back in late afternoons around the TV networks in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Interesting to play a full delayed game some 12+ hours after it started.

@OnAir BBC World, described as ‘the BBC’s international news channel’, was launched in January 1995 and TV One’s (now TVNZ 1) overnight downtime was replaced with a live feed of BBC World via satellite in March.

This coincided with the launch of Horizon Pacific Television (HPTV), a group of regional television stations based in Auckland (ATV), Hamilton (Coast to Coast), Wellington (Capital City) and Dunedin (Southern) respectively. HPTV was fully owned by TVNZ and also carried the BBC World feed via satellite, although transmission ran from 3pm until 11pm on a daily basis.
