Coronation Street in colour (and black and white)

Episode 924 of the world’s longest running soap opera, Coronation Street, premiered in Britain on 3 November 1969. The preceding episode, filmed entirely in 16mm black and white, showcased the residents of the street on a coach trip to the Lake District.

This episode, which included a peculiar coach crash and subsequent treatment of the residents’ injuries at a local hospital, was the first produced with colour cameras, although it retained the black and white title sequence from 1964, along with the monochrome “End of Part One” and “Part Two” captions, end credits and two filmed location sequences.

The following three episodes were created in a similar fashion (though they did not include any location inserts) but all four were slated for broadcast in black and white as ITV’s colour service did not officially launch until 15 November 1969 in the regions covered by Granada (Manchester), Thames/LWT (London), ATV (Birmingham), and Yorkshire (Leeds), which have since ceased operations.

However, the Independent Television Authority (ITA) conducted test broadcasts of colour programmes in those same regions on different frequencies, allowing viewers to watch this episode in colour if they retuned their sets.

In New Zealand, this episode of Coronation Street (which was recorded in colour with black and white inserts throughout) screened on NZBC TV on the evening of Thursday 17 October 1974 - nearly five years after it was first shown in Britain.

Goodnight Kiwi’s final showing

Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) closed down for the last time at 1.10am on the evening of Wednesday 19 October 1994 (overnight Thursday) after showing a rerun of the US drama series, The Trials of Rosie O’Neill, starring Sharon Gless (of Cagney & Lacey fame).

This occasion also marked the final appearances of the beloved TVNZ mascots, Goodnight Kiwi and the Cat, who had become a nostalgic symbol for us as New Zealanders when it came to nightly closedowns. By dawn the next day, Channel 2 transitioned to 24 hour transmission.

Included are two items (please note that the quality of the videos featured in this post is low and I apologise for that) from TVNZ’s current affairs programmes, Holmes and Newsnight - both of which screened that night. The Holmes item was reported by Kerryanne Evans while Mark Staufer, as the roving reporter for Newsnight, provided his own take on the final appearances of Goodnight Kiwi and the Cat just hours before closedown.

Would agree here, Sky wanted the Super 12 to be on UHF (even those early morning games from South Africa…) as it was more popular than League. Even non-NZ teams would draw viewers on UHF more than NRL. Like if the Crusaders played the Bulls in SA, it started at 2am in NZ, or if the Cats played the Blues at 6am (19.10 in SA) and it draw a decent audience even at that hour.

Is there a listing containing the first airing of SpongeBob on TV2? The earliest archived one online is from March 2000 airing on Squirt, but they licensed the show back in September 1999, so I reckon the first airing was earlier.
