The Royal Wedding of HRH Prince Andrew & Miss Sarah Ferguson
On the evening of Wednesday 23 July 1986, a significant milestone in royal history captivated viewers around the globe and New Zealand was no exception. At 9pm NZT TV One (now TVNZ 1) brought audiences live satellite coverage of a grand royal event - the wedding of HRH Prince Andrew and Miss Sarah Ferguson. This union not only marked a pivotal moment in the British royal family but also highlighted the power of television to connect people with important global events.
As the world focused its attention on Westminster Abbey, where the ceremony unfolded, an impressive 40 TV cameras documented every moment of the nuptials. The grandeur of the occasion was heightened by the presence of a live commentary by seasoned British broadcaster, David Dimbleby, whose articulate descriptions and insights provided context and depth to the unfolding spectacle. For us as New Zealanders, this was more than just a wedding; it represented the allure and mystique of royal life, drawing them into a narrative that spanned across oceans.
The marriage of Prince Andrew, the son of Queen Elizabeth II, to Sarah Ferguson was a moment steeped in tradition and pomp. The iconic atmosphere of Westminster Abbey, filled with the echoes of history, served as a fitting backdrop for the vows exchanged. As viewers across New Zealand tuned in, they were invited to partake in the joyous celebrations of a royal wedding - a rare treat that bridged the gap between a distant monarchy and faraway families watching from their living rooms.
As the ceremony concluded TV One maintained its commitment to delivering royal content. A five minute spot for the late news was shown at the slightly later time of 12.30am and summarised the day’s events. However, for many viewers, the enchantment of the wedding lingered, far beyond the mere minutes allocated for news coverage. Shortly after, TV One ended transmission and closed the curtain on an unforgettable evening that united audiences in shared fascination and joy.
The wedding was later commemorated for its unique aspects, including Fergie’s infectious spirit and warmth, which won the hearts of many. The couple’s lively personalities contrasted with the austere image often associated with the royal family, making the event feel more approachable to everyday viewers. Furthermore, Sarah Ferguson’s dress, designed by Lindka Cierach, became iconic in its own right, epitomising the era’s style.
As we look back on that remarkable evening in July 1986, it becomes evident how the royal wedding served as a catalyst for greater engagement between the British monarchy and international audiences. It showcased the increasing influence of television in bringing distant events closer to home, forging emotional connections with viewers who had only previously followed royal events through newspapers or radio.
The wedding of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson may be a chapter in the annals of royal history, but its impact on television broadcasting and public engagement endures. It remains a fond memory for those who witnessed it and a reminder of how pivotal moments in history can resonate far beyond their time and place - uniting people across continents in shared experience. In the years since, royal weddings have continued to capture attention but few have matched the sense of connection that that summer evening in New Zealand provided.
Remember Fergie? Indeed, many still do, with warm nostalgia for a day that combined tradition, celebration and the magic of live television.

Hey Hey It’s Saturday
@Brianc68 @TV4 @NuStraya The iconic Australian variety show Hey Hey It’s Saturday, known for its vibrant energy and eclectic format, made its way across the Tasman Sea to entertain us as New Zealanders on the evening of Saturday 15 June 1991. Launching on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) at 6.30pm, the show carried with it a rich history of laughter and entertainment that had captivated viewers since its debut on Australian television in 1971.
Under the charming host Daryl Somers, along with the beloved puppet Ossie Ostrich (voiced by the late Ernie Carroll), Hey Hey It’s Saturday became a staple in Australian households. The show featured an array of regular performers who quickly established themselves as household names across the ditch. Wilbur Wilde, Red Symons, Molly Meldrum and the late John Blackman - who provided the unforgettable voice of Dickie Knee - were among the familiar faces that enlivened each episode.
Audiences were treated to a diverse blend of entertainment with segments like Pick Your Face, Molly’s Melodrama and the light-hearted, slapstick antics of Plucka Duck. This variety not only appealed to a wide demographic but also created a sense of nostalgia for viewers who had grown up with the show.
When Hey Hey It’s Saturday debuted on New Zealand screens, it was met with anticipation. The show featured the inclusion of the live Lotto draw with Marise Wipani and Doug Harvey as hosts and positioned itself as a prime family entertainment option for Saturday evenings. However, the competitive landscape quickly shifted with the introduction of Bruce Forsyth’s Generation Game, a reimagined British classic that debuted on TV3 (now Three) in the same 6.30pm slot.
The return of the legendary Bruce Forsyth, who had gained fame in the 70s, brought a fresh and appealing format to the New Zealand audience, paving the way for a television battle that drew unprecedented attention. Television pundits and fans alike, which is from my own opinion, began to refer to this rivalry as an ‘Ashes battle’ reflecting the significance of both shows in the cultural landscape.
Despite its established legacy and loyal fan base, Hey Hey It’s Saturday struggled to prevent a declining viewership amid the resurgence of Brucie’s charisma. By mid-July 1991 the inevitable occurred: the Australian variety show was relegated to a late night timeslot (anywhere between 10.30pm and 11.30pm). The seasoned entertainers who had once commanded the Saturday primetime spotlight found themselves overshadowed by the renewed charm of The Generation Game. Poor old Brucie!
Daryl, Ossie and the gang faced the bittersweet reality that even the most cherished shows can find themselves on the sidelines. It was a stark reminder of the ebb and flow of the television landscape in which even beloved programmes can fall prey to changing trends and the allure of fresh entertainment.
Though Hey Hey It’s Saturday may no longer hold the same dominance it once enjoyed, the show’s impact on Australian and New Zealand pop culture is undeniable. Its blend of humour, music and variety created a sense of community and joy for countless viewers over the decades. As many Australians recall the camaraderie fostered by Daryl Somers, Ossie Ostrich and the talented cast, the memories linger on.
As television continues to evolve, we remember the contributions of the late John Blackman, Ernie Carroll and all the performers who made Hey Hey It’s Saturday a cherished part of our entertainment history. This classic variety show serves as a testament to the enduring appeal of laughter and joy shared in front of the screen, bridging generations and cultures across Australia and New Zealand.
Watched this and the first film a few nights ago. Still mostly hold up imo.

Interesting, wasn’t South Pacific available to South Island until 6pm? Was there a technical reason, was it relayed all the way from Auckland back then, or local playout from Christchurch?
Pretty sure there was only one microwave link, TV One got it during the day, so they fed TV2 CHCH overnight or at night… @PaddyTePou will have a better idea.
Sounds like the microwave was in use from Wellington for whenever One in Christchurch was on-air and South Pacific must have used the microwave link when not in use by One to pre-feed programs to Christchurch from Auckland overnight for local replay from Christchurch from 6pm onwards the next day? Weren’t both networks totally separate back then before merging as TVNZ?
Yep, seperate until 1980.

The very first Lotto draw
@TV4 “Lotto, Lotto… you get a lot out of it!”
1987 was a year of significant change and upheaval for New Zealand, marked by both incredible highs and devastating lows.
While the Labour Party, under David Lange, solidified its hold on power and the All Blacks triumphed in the inaugural Rugby World Cup, the year was also punctuated by a stock market crash, a bus accident in Hawke’s Bay and a destructive Edgecumbe earthquake in the Bay of Plenty.
But the main focus was the highly anticipated launch of Lotto.
In February 1986 the New Zealand Cabinet gave its approval for the creation of Lotto. Parliament swiftly followed suit, passing the necessary legislation in April with a 47-20 vote. The New Zealand Lotteries Commission (now Lotto NZ) was formed in June 1987 and incorporated the existing Golden Kiwi lottery under its control.
Sales of the first Lotto tickets began on 22 July 1987, resulting in the formation of extensive queues at Lotto retailers up and down the country. And at 8pm on the evening of Saturday 1 August 1987, the first Lotto draw went to air live on Network Two (now TVNZ 2).
For 52 weeks New Zealanders had the chance to win a 1st Division prize which, according to the Lotteries Commission, was predicted to be at least $250,000 each week. The winning numbers for the first Lotto draw were 4, 8, 16, 29, 32 and 40, and the bonus number was 30. The 1st Division prize for that draw was $359,808 (an equivalent of $921,969 today - at the time of writing), which was split four ways.
Produced live to air at TVNZ’s Auckland studios, the original Lotto presenters were Doug Harvey (who was manager of a now defunct Auckland radio station, Radio i, at the time and had a wealth of experience in the broadcasting industry) and Ann Wilson (a talented singer, dancer and actress who brought a touch of glamour to the show).
To ensure foolproof security each draw involved scrutineers from the Lotteries Commission, the Department of Internal Affairs and Audit NZ, who would travel from Wellington to Auckland and make a brief appearance on screen during the live draw, showcasing the intricate security measures in place.
The original Lotto ball machine (aka ‘the barrel’), housed in a secure area, was accessible only by two people with separate keys. The mystery surrounding the game was heightened as the selection of the set of numbered ball was not revealed until the night of the draw. Two sets of 40 balls were available for each draw, ensuring an even more predictable outcome.
TVNZ staff were not allowed to touch the Lotto equipment, including the ball machine and sets, except to set them up on the studio floor. If a power failure occurred then the draw could continue manually. Previously drawn numbers remained in the weekly prize sequence. It was expected that, when Lotto first started, the weekly prize pool would frequently exceed $1 million due to the jackpot or rollover system which kicked in if 1st Division was not won.
Today, Lotto is played twice a week with draws taking place every Wednesday and Saturday.
You can watch the very first Lotto draw via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above, or you can watch the opening titles and then hear the music from Lotto’s third year (1989). After all, with Lotto, happy days are here again!

Lotto’s 10th Birthday
At 7pm on the evening of Saturday 2 August 1997, TV2 (now TVNZ 2) screened a 90 minute variety special which celebrated 10 years of Lotto, New Zealand’s original lottery game.
Compered by Simon Barnett, Lotto’s 10th Birthday featured a blend of live variety acts and special appearances by former Lotto presenters. Meanwhile, Hilary Timmins and Todd Scott co-hosted Lotto’s $4 million ‘Birthday Superdraw’.
The one-off special was produced live-to-air at Wellington’s Avalon Studios.

Skin Pics
Directed by Geoff Steven, Skin Pics is a half hour documentary exploring the tattoo culture in New Zealand. It screened on TV2 (now known as TVNZ 2) at 7pm on the evening of Monday 4 August 1980 as part of TVNZ’s weekly series of one-off documentaries, Contact, and featured no commercial breaks.
Skin Pics captured an era when ‘folk art became high art’, showcasing visits to tattoo parlours on K’ Road and in Hastings, as well as the studios of renowned industry figures Steve Johnson and Roger Ingerton. Tattoo artists addressed issues such as societal stigma, the motivations behind getting tattoos and popular motifs like sailors, serpents, swallows and tā moko.
Geoff Steven went on to direct another documentary on tattoos titled Signatures of the Soul, which was narrated by US actor Peter Fonda.
You can watch the documentary via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.
The Gentle Touch
A new British drama series titled The Gentle Touch made its debut on ITV in April 1980 and subsequently premiered in New Zealand on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 8.30pm on the evening of Monday 4 August 1980.
The series starred Jill Gascoine as Detective Inspector Maggie Forbes, who has advanced through the ranks of the police force and is based at the fictional Seven Dials police station in London. In the opening episode Maggie’s husband, a police constable (played by Leslie Schofield), is murdered, forcing her to balance her career with the challenges of single parenthood while raising her teenage son. Sue Nicholls, better known as Audrey Roberts from Coronation Street, guest starred in that episode.
The Gentle Touch primarily focused on typical police procedures and provided a candid portrayal of significant social issues such as racism, sexism, homosexuality, mental health and euthanasia. Compared to earlier classic crime shows like The Sweeney, it had a lower level of action and violence, choosing instead a realistic and understated tone. While the show mostly highlighted Maggie’s professional challenges in a male dominated environment, it also explored her home life with her elderly father George (James Ottaway) and her teenage son Steve (Nigel Rathbone). Occasionally, her romantic relationships were depicted which sometimes conflicted with her job.
The Gentle Touch enjoyed strong ratings in the UK and Gascoine became a well known figure until the series concluded in 1984. Maggie Forbes was later reintroduced in the action driven spin-off series, C.A.T.S. Eyes (also created by Terence Feely, the brains behind The Gentle Touch), which followed a specialised team of female detectives in Kent working covertly for the Home Office. C.A.T.S. Eyes ran from 1985 to 1987.
Tragically, Gascoine passed away from Alzheimer’s disease in 2020 at the age of 83.
