David Lange - resigned as Prime Minister

David Lange, who successfully guided the Labour Party through two election victories and oversaw five years of significant transformation (albeit sometimes with hesitation), startled New Zealand by announcing his unexpected resignation as Prime Minister on Monday 7 August 1989. Geoffrey Palmer stepped in as his successor the next day with Helen Clark taking on the role of Deputy Prime Minister, as decided by the Labour Caucus.

On the evening of Tuesday 8 August 1989 - just one day after Lange’s resignation - TV One (now TVNZ 1) screened an extended, hour-long edition of TVNZ’s mid-evening news and current affairs programme, EyeWitness News, at 9.30pm. Rob Neale fronted this special edition which featured interviews with Geoffrey Palmer and Helen Clark, along with insights from Richard Harman, TVNZ’s then parliamentary reporter; political scientist Professor Keith Jackson (of the University of Canterbury); and political commentator Colin James. The programme also included results from a special Heylen poll while Tom Bradley provided a summary of the day’s other main stories.

Another hour-long edition of EyeWitness News was shown the night before on TV One at 9pm rather than 9.30pm.

Geoffrey Palmer
While some viewed Geoffrey Palmer’s election as a symbol of reassurance and stability, critics argued that he lacked that elusive ‘X’ factor, the charisma and sharp humour reminiscent of a David Lange.

Born in Nelson, this law professor, academic and constitutional lawyer entered Parliament in 1979 after winning the Christchurch Central by-election. He quickly developed a reputation for his attention to detail, becoming Deputy Leader of the Opposition in 1983 and acquiring the Justice portfolio in the subsequent election year.

As Deputy Prime Minister in the newly formed Labour government, he played a crucial role in implementing Labour’s bold reforms. In 1989 Palmer passionately engaged with environmental and Pacific issues. However, he faced a formidable challenge in leading his party to victory in the 1990 election which ultimately did not come to fruition when he resigned on 4 September that year, being succeeded by Mike Moore before losing to the National Party led by Jim Bolger.

While considered a safe choice within the Party, critics claimed he lacked the everyday appeal necessary for polling success, though he had occasionally shown a more relatable side on international stages. As the author of multiple works on law, power and its abuses, Geoffrey Palmer emerged as arguably the most influential figure in the nation.

Rob Neale conducted a remote interview with Geoffrey Palmer in the EyeWitness News studio.

Helen Clark
Helen Clark, the first woman to serve as Deputy Prime Minister of New Zealand, experienced a swift ascent through the ranks of Parliament after entering in 1981. By the age of 39, she was already a seasoned campaigner for the Labour Party, having embarked on her political journey during her student years, where she lectured in politics and led the student branch of the Party in 1973.

Clark’s initial experience in politics occurred in 1975 when she unsuccessfully contested the safe National seat of Piako. Her entry to Parliament materialised six years later when she won the Mt Albert seat from long-term Labour MP Warren Frear. As chair of the Foreign Affairs and Disarmament Committee, she became a prominent advocate for Labour’s anti-nuclear stance.

By 1987 Clark attained a Cabinet position, securing the Housing and Conservation portfolios. In her role in Conservation she took a stand against powerful mining interests when she rejected gold mining on the Monowai site in Coromandel.

In 1988 Helen Clark found herself under pressure again, this time in her newly elevated position as Minister of Health. This promotion also tasked her with spearheading a cost and efficiency initiative within the public sector which ultimately led to her decision to dismiss the Auckland Area Health Board.

Rob Neale conducted a remote interview with Helen Clark, who later served as Prime Minister from 1999 to 2008, in the EyeWitness News studio.

I thought the Reds-Bulls match would have been on Sky Sport 2 with Roosters-Knights on Sky Sport 1? Or was the S12 always on Sport 1 with NRL on Sport 2?

I’d say that they always put the Super 12 over the NRL n UHF- The only time i can tell that they put NRL over S12 was in 2000 when the Brumbies-Cats semi was on Sky Sport 2.

By and large, League was put on Sky Sport 2 when there was a clash (obviously by this time Digital was firmly established but some still had UHF).

Warriors games were also carried on general entertainment channel Sky 1 for a number of seasons from the early 2000s to ensure UHF viewers could watch them (with Union taking precedence on SS1)…if that makes sense.

That is TV One schedules before it interrupted for the coverage of the 1994 Commonwealth Games held in Victoria, Canada.

With the NRL on Sundays, i assume that the Nine game always aired on UHF, since that was the bigger game (aired at 4pm in NSW/QLD/ACT in AUS) with the Fox Sports live game on SS2. Back then, there was (on average) 3 games on Sunday afternoon during 2000-06. During 2002-06, one at 2:30pm and two at 3pm. SS1 would carry the delayed Ch9 match (at 5pm, which corresponds to 3pm AUS) with SS2 airing the Fox 2:30pm game (which corresponds to 4.30pm NZ) followed by the 3pm game covered by Fox. Or did SS1 air the Nine game, then Fox’s 3pm game (if the Warriors were involved, the Fox 3pm match would be live on Sky 1.)

Couldn’t TV2 run with the live cricket until stumps, why bother with the morning session only?
No wonder TVNZ lost allot of sport when SKY and 3 arrived.

In 1986 TVNZ provided coverage of the international cricket tests (England v NZ) only during the morning session, starting around 10pm NZT, and showed highlights at 6pm the following evening on TV One (now TVNZ 1). On the weekends the cricket highlights were featured in Sport on One (Saturday) and Sunday Grandstand.

TV2 would show Cricket again in 1997, and then again last year when TVNZ Executives did not want the breakfast show called off for a day then it would be on 1 during the weekends

My recollection is TV2 would show the one day internationals which were increasingly being played under day-night format then and TV1 the test matches,

The Network Two Coca-Cola Music Weekend (19-21 August 1988)

The most prominent names in the music industry at home and overseas featured in Network Two’s (now TVNZ 2) musical showcase during the weekend of 19-21 August 1988.

The Network Two Coca-Cola Music Weekend commenced at midnight on Friday 19 August (overnight Saturday), continuing through until midnight on Sunday 21 August (overnight Monday) and kicking off with the Nelson Mandela Birthday Concert.

This music weekend - which included a variety of music specials, films, documentaries and concerts to appeal to diverse musical preferences (from Kiri Te Kanawa to Iron Maiden) - was introduced by actors Simon Prast and Jay Laga’aia, along with several guest presenters.

16 August 1988 marked the 11th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death and the King’s performance was featured in the 1962 film Kid Galahad which screened at noon on Sunday 21 August. The film line-up also included The Sound of Music (starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer), The Rocky Horror Picture Show (starring Tim Curry and Susan Sarandon) and Play Misty for Me (directed by and starring Clint Eastwood), plus the television premiere of The Big Chill (starring Tom Berenger, Glenn Close, Jeff Goldblum, William Hurt and others).

Concerts were held by Cyndi Lauper, David Bowie, Terence Trent D’Arby, The Rolling Stones, John Lennon, Frank Sinatra, Dame Kiri Te Kanawa and Michael Houstoun, accompanied by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra.

New Zealand music was showcased alongside international stars with a special edition of Heartbeat City called Kiwi Rock: Don’t You Forget It. Bruce Springsteen took part in an exclusive interview which was featured in the documentary, Inside the Tunnel of Love, while the all-female Kiwi group, When the Cat’s Away, offered a unique look at the New Zealand pub scene in a TVNZ documentary covering their national tour, which was originally shown in December 1987.
