MTV’s final week

In June 1997 the late Neil Roberts, who held the position of general manager of television at TVNZ back then, announced that Horizon Pacific Television (a group of regional television stations which encompassed ATV, Coast to Coast, Capital City, CTV and Southern) would be replaced with the MTV UK service, featuring the inclusion of local commercial advertising and some New Zealand content. As a result of this decision, MTV was officially launched in New Zealand on the evening of Wednesday 2 July 1997 at 5pm.

“MTV is coming and it’s about to change the face of television for the youth of New Zealand. MTV is dedicated to the youth market, talking in their language about issues that interest them. It laser targets young people - 15-29s and those with a young attitude - an audience which according to our research, seriously needs attention. MTV will give this audience what it wants. MTV is cutting edge television which will expose young Kiwis to a new global experience.” - Neil Roberts

At its peak MTV was the biggest TV network globally, reaching approximately 281 million households spread over 79 territories on every continent (except Antarctica).

“One in every four households in the world receives MTV, and I’m proud to announce that New Zealand is about to join this global audience. It’s also worth noting that we are the only country in the world who is providing this 24-hour service free-to-air.” - Neil Roberts

Nevertheless, Roberts perceived MTV not just as a platform for music videos but rather as a comprehensive youth entertainment channel.

“We will be bringing Kiwis the hottest, newest MTV service available - MTV UK - coming right from the heart of the latest and greatest music and entertainment scene.” - Neil Roberts

“Within weeks you’ll be seeing local shows on MTV in New Zealand. These shows will provide the most powerful platform for launching local music and youth culture ever seen in this country. New Zealand music won’t be marginalised. It will be heard and seen in prime-time from one end of the country to the other.” - Neil Roberts

The programming approach of MTV was most accurately encapsulated by Brent Hansen, a New Zealander who served as both president and creative director of MTV Networks Europe. Prior to this role Hansen had gained experience working on various music shows for TVNZ, including That’s Country and Radio with Pictures.

“MTV produces programming for a vast, diverse and discerning audience of young, style-conscious music lovers. This has to be done in response to the ever-advancing flux of popular tastes and popular music culture. We have to stay constantly aware of what our viewers are into - always out there, always on the edge.” - Brent Hansen

“The UK is certainly a very hip place to be at the moment with the most creative and widespread styles of music. I think the choice of TVNZ to pick the UK service is perfect for this moment. There’s a lot of great creativity happening here in the UK and I think it will be very enjoyable and interesting for people in New Zealand to get a sense of this.” - Brent Hansen

Less than a year after launch, TVNZ made the decision in May 1998 to terminate its licensing agreement to broadcast MTV. The service came to an end at midnight on the evening of Sunday 7 June 1998.

Rick Ellis, who was the CEO of TVNZ at the time, expressed that MTV was a daring venture for TVNZ that did not achieve the expected viewership numbers upon launch.

“When we launched MTV here in New Zealand, the initial research suggested that music television, as a solely free-to-air service, could satisfy the needs of a growing youth segment in the New Zealand viewer marketplace.” - Rick Ellis

Ellis further added that while MTV’s ratings in New Zealand were in line with those from other countries, the pivotal factor was the scale of the New Zealand market.

“There were simply too few viewers combined with too little advertiser and sponsor support. It meant that we were losing too much money to justify continuing with it. And all our forward projections do not show the situation improving significantly in either the short or long term.” - Rick Ellis

“MTV Networks, at all times, met its obligations and contractual commitments, providing us with an exciting quality music television product. It is unfortunate that the economics of the situation here in the New Zealand television market have led to the decision to close.” - Rick Ellis

“The management and staff of MTV did all that was asked of them to try and make the channel work, unveiling some exciting new cutting-edge shows.” - Rick Ellis

MTV showcased various homegrown programmes which included Havoc (featuring hosts Mikey Havoc and Jeremy Wells [previously known as Newsboy]), a magazine-style entertainment show, along with Squeeze, a weekly series focusing entirely on New Zealand music with Francesca Rudkin as host. Toast and Wrekognize, a hip hop show helmed by DLT and DJ Sir-Vere, were also part of the line-up. MTV Star Trax, a show where celebrities picked their favourite music videos, was also adapted for local audiences. MTV also re-screened TVNZ’s youth magazine programme, Mai Time, typically shown on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) at 11am on a Saturday morning.

With the closure of MTV, some programmes like Havoc and Squeeze were moved to TV2 and potentially reached significantly larger audiences as stated by Rick Ellis.

Ground Zero

New Zealand’s first live interactive music programme, Ground Zero, made its debut on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) at 10.25pm on the evening of Friday 2 July 1999.

Modelled after an Australian format of the same name, Ground Zero was hosted by Francesca Rudkin and Graeme Hill. The programme, though centred around music, was not strictly a music programme as it heavily emphasised audience interaction, catering for a youth demographic.

The format included music videos, live performances, comedy, gossip, celebrity guests and youth issues. It also featured live communication via telephone, fax and internet, including hot pages, chat rooms, comments, request and competition pages.

Its contributors included Marie Azcona (Tim Finn’s wife at the time) and Matty Bruns, (aka “Midday Matty” or 'Midnight Matty") as well as the Back of the Y crew, led by Matt Heath and Chris Stapp.

An Australian TV producer, James Mark Anthony, conceived Ground Zero and negotiated significant sponsorships, allowing the programme to be produced cost free for Network 10. Following the sale of the format to Becker Entertainment the programme, which had been screening on Network 10 since 1997/98, concluded in 2001 due to dwindling sponsorship.

The New Zealand version, produced by Satellite Pictures (now Satellite) in association with Becker Entertainment for TVNZ, lasted for a year and was replaced in 2000 by Space.

The final of Sale of the Century on TVNZ

On the evening of Friday 18 June 1993 the final episode of what was then New Zealand’s richest quiz, Sale of the Century, screened on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 5.30pm. The episode marked the end of the show’s first local incarnation and brought a close to over a thousand episodes that had been entertaining audiences since its debut on the evening of Monday 3 April 1989.

In the finale, returning contestant Tony faced off against two formidable opponents: Linley, a policy services officer, and Richard, a multilingual tutor who had spent seven years living in a barn. The stakes were high with a hand-knitted rug, a $16,000 US trip and a box potentially containing a $29,000 Mitsubishi Mirage on the line. Adding to the excitement were Steve Parr’s opening slide, Jude Dobson’s stunning dress and male models sporting bright yellow overalls.

The show’s first local incarnation had been a staple of New Zealand television for five years. Its series premiere screened on TVNZ on the same evening that the network launched its nightly current affairs programme, Holmes, at 6.30pm with an infamous Dennis Conner interview. During its initial run Sale of the Century was shown on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 7pm while Holmes screened on TV One, but the show didn’t move across to TV One until the evening of Monday 31 July 1989.

Despite the initial success of the show, a revival of Sale of the Century screened on TV3 (now Three) in September 1994. Regrettably, the show was axed in April 1995 due to low ratings and stiff competition from Holmes, which had been strategically moved to the highly coveted 7pm timeslot by TVNZ in February that year.

Sale of the Century left a lasting impact on New Zealand television, marking the golden age of game shows and quizzes that captured audiences and offered life changing prizes. Though the final episode marked the end of an era, the spirit of friendly competition and the thrilling atmosphere of Sale of the Century remain an essential part of New Zealand’s television history.

You can watch the final episode of Sale of the Century via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

I would have been watching more of TV2 if I was there in 1985. Prisoner, The Young Doctors and Falcon Crest. Sold!

In contrast to Prisoner being screened during primetime (e.g. 8.30pm) in Australia, New Zealanders were watching the show in an afternoon timeslot (e.g. 2.30pm) instead of primetime.

Telethon 1988

The sight of countless New Zealanders performing the conga dance at all hours of the morning signified a single event - Telethon. It screened on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 7.30pm on the evening of Saturday 25 June 1988 and ran for 24 hours.

Hosted in Auckland by Judy Bailey and Natalie Brunt (now Natalie Chetkovich), Telethon was a televised fundraising initiative in which all proceeds benefited the Home and Neighbourhood Trust. This charitable organisation aimed to mitigate violence in households and neighbourhoods nationwide and also supported voluntary groups focusing on parent assistance, drug education and violence prevention.

72 Telethon centres across the country were manned by local celebrities, sports icons and media personalities for the entire 24 hour duration. The event was held at nine venues: Auckland, Hamilton, Gisborne, Palmerston North, Wellington, Nelson, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill.

International guests included Leeza Gibbons, Mike Smith, Estelle Getty, Helen Worth, Christopher Quinten, Susan Tully, Letitia Dean, Max Gail, Kim Lewis, Antonia Murphy, Ian Rawlings, Su Pollard, Alix Elias and Blair Underwood.

A memorable aspect of Telethon’s Sunday morning (NZ time) was live crosses, via satellite, to New Zealand House in London, hosting a Telethon ball and auction. The hosts included Phillip Schofield, Karyn Hay, Pip Dann and Michelle Bracey with guests like Boy George, Leo Sayer, Nyree Dawn Porter, Claire Oberman, The Mockers, Dance Exponents, Michael Bentine, Ernie Wise, Bill Oddie, Paul Eddington and members of the EastEnders cast.

Telethon 1985

In 1985 TVNZ hosted a remarkable 24-hour non-stop entertainment extravaganza, the Telethon, to raise funds for the Child and Youth Development Trust.

This marathon event was broadcast live from seven cities across New Zealand: Auckland, Hamilton, Palmerston North, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin and Invercargill. The Telethon’s primary objective was to foster child and youth development, promoting their safety, health and overall wellbeing.

The Child and Youth Development Trust, the recipient of the 1985 Telethon’s proceeds, aimed to achieve this by supporting services, programmes and projects that enhanced children’s and young people’s physical, emotional and social development. These initiatives included services that increased child safety, educational programmes promoting physical and social development and services fostering personal responsibility within children and young people towards themselves and the community.

Over 500 acts and 1,200 personalities took part in this grand event with approximately 15,000 volunteers lending their support. Among the international guests were notable figures such as Michael Bentine from The Goon Show, Sorrell Booke from The Dukes of Hazzard and Johnny Briggs from Coronation Street. Other guests included (New Zealand’s own) Alan Dale and Chris King from The Young Doctors, Victoria Nicholls from Prisoner, US country singer Becky Hobbs, Ernie Hudson from the 1984 film Ghostbusters, Deborah Raffin from the 1974 film The Dove and Malaysian-Australian singer and entertainer Kamahl, as well as various television personalities such as Valerie Landsburg from Fame, Ernie Wise from The Morecambe & Wise Show and James B Sikking and Bruce Weitz from Hill Street Blues.

The 1985 Telethon commenced at 8pm on the evening of Saturday 29 June on TV One (now TVNZ 1). This incredible event raised over $6 million for the Child and Youth Development Trust, a staggering $6,007,722 to be exact. The 1985 Telethon stands as a testament to the power of entertainment in uniting people for a noble cause, improving the lives of children and young people across New Zealand.

Telethon 1988 (UPDATE)

Here is an updated report on my previous post. The 1988 Telethon successfully amassed over $5.5 million (precisely $5,503,413) for the Home and Neighbourhood Trust. This benevolent organisation was dedicated to addressing and reducing violence within both homes and communities across New Zealand. Furthermore, it lent its support to various voluntary organisations that centred around parental assistance, drug awareness and violence prevention.

The launch of TV2

Televised competition made its way to New Zealand with the launch of TV2. The concept was conceived by the Labour Government at the time, led by Bill Rowling as Prime Minister, with the intention of providing viewers with more dynamic and engaging programming.

TV2, also known as South Pacific Television (SPTV), commenced broadcasting at 1pm on the afternoon of Monday 30 June 1975 and the first programme screened that day was Search for Tomorrow, a US soap chronicling the life of Joanne Tate Vincent and her circle of acquaintances, family and friends.

TV2 debuted with a disadvantage due to the lack of a comprehensive network. In the absence of full links connecting Auckland and Christchurch, the new network was unable to transmit programmes from the two main cities to its entire viewership at will.

Initially, TV2 began broadcasting in Auckland and Christchurch, utilising the Waiatarua (ranging from Kaiwaka to Port Waikato) and Sugarloaf (stretching from Waipara to Ashburton) transmitters. However, transmission hours in Christchurch were restricted due to a malfunctioning transmitter aerial at Sugarloaf, leading to a delayed 6pm start in the city. Within three months the TV2 signal was expanded to the Waikato and Bay of Plenty via the Te Aroha (from Thames to Tokoroa) transmitter, but Wellington had to wait until the end of 1975 with Dunedin, Southland and Manawatu gaining access the following year. Regrettably, reception outside those areas was not assured!

The upcoming network was intended to embody elements of community orientation, intentional regional integration, a prompt response to the public and a nuanced Polynesian fusion.

Allan Martin, TV2’s CEO at the time, stated, “We’re not based on some distant European model. We’re an organisation built, made and engineered in this part of the world for our own requirements to serve the national interest.”

This commitment was apparent in its Polynesian inspired theme music, the logo featuring the Māori koru symbol and its robust local focus - three quarters of the evening news at 7pm was dedicated to regional news (more details below).

Programming
More than 30 new programmes were screened in TV2’s first week on air and many of which were fan favourites. As previously stated, TV2 launched with Search for Tomorrow at 1pm but transmission in Christchurch began at 6pm due to a malfunctioning aerial at the Sugarloaf transmitter. The network closed down at around 1am after showing The Marcus-Nelson Murders, a feature-length pilot for the legendary 70s US crime series, Kojak.

Commercial advertising was seen from Monday to Thursday and on Saturdays. The non-commercial days were Friday and Sunday.

There were nine new programmes screened during afternoon viewing slots, such as Speakeasy (a magazine-style programme with field items and candid studio discussions), Concentration (a memory game involving studio guests that viewers could join at home) and a New Zealand serial drama, A Going Concern, which recounted the experiences of those working at the JoyPam Plastics factory in Auckland.

Children had the option of watching 14 new shows, five of which were produced in Auckland and Christchurch.

The evening viewing hours presented 12 new programmes, such as nightly news (Two at Seven in Auckland and Points South in Christchurch), music shows (The Goodtime Show and Norman), a talent contest (Opportunity Knocks), a documentary (Encounter) and sport. Overseas highlights included the Edwardian drama series Upstairs Downstairs, the British police series Softly, Softly: Task Force and Sez Les (a showcase for comedian Les Dawson, who was a fan favourite on the Jokers Wild team).

TV2’s closedown times were roughly 11.30pm Monday to Thursday, around midnight on Friday and Saturday and approximately 11pm on Sunday.

News
The evening news on TV2 screened Monday to Friday at 7pm and ran for half an hour. Known as Two at Seven in Auckland and Points South in Christchurch respectively, each news programme commenced with opening titles and a preview of the regional segment, akin to presenting the headlines.

Following this was an eight minute segment of national and international news, possibly featuring satellite coverage. Jennie Goodwin, the first regular female newsreader not only in New Zealand but in the Commonwealth, presented the news from Auckland. This was followed by a commercial break and then the weather forecast (with Keith Bracey in Auckland, for example) and the local and regional news (e.g. Points South with Bryan Allpress in Christchurch).

On Saturdays the evening news screened at 6pm and ran for half an hour, with approximately 15 minutes allocated for local and regional features. On Sundays it also screened at 6pm and ran for a shorter duration of 15 minutes, focusing more on regional weather forecasts.

TV2 also intended to produce a half hour News at Ten bulletin, concentrating on the significant national and international news of the day.

Due to the unavailability of a microwave link between Auckland and Christchurch, any Christchurch items were limited to those of national importance with the film footage freighted to Auckland in time. The format of News at Ten was similar to that of Britain’s ITN, with the first part dedicated to major news and the second featuring magazine-style items. Co-anchored in Auckland by Tom Bradley and Sam Gardiner, News at Ten screened Monday to Friday at 10pm.

On the weekends a mid-evening/late night bulletin, known as Newsroom, screened anywhere between 9.30pm and 11.15pm and ran for 10 minutes. Newsroom consisted solely of an update on the latest in national and international news.

Telethon
TV2’s commitment to the community was showcased during its first week with New Zealand’s first Telethon, screening at 8.30pm on the evening of Saturday 5 July 1975.

Branded as ‘24 Hours of Excitement and Entertainment’, it was projected that approximately 1,200 people, including performers and hosts, would be involved in Auckland and Christchurch, generously contributing their services for free to raise funds for the St John Ambulance Service. The mastermind behind the Telethon was Max Bostock from TVW Channel 7 in Perth, who had been invited by TV2 due to his extensive experience with telethons throughout Australia.

The 1975 Telethon successfully raised almost $600,000 ($593,878 precisely) for the St John Ambulance Service.
