Crossroads

On Easter Monday, 4 April 1988, a long-running British television series came to an end.

Crossroads, also known as Crossroads Kings Oak, had been on air since 1964 and produced an impressive 4,510 episodes over the years. The final episode saw the last remaining original character, Jill Chance (played by Jane Rossington), riding off into the sunset with her new lover John Maddingham (Jeremy Nicholas). It was a bittersweet ending for fans who had been following the lives and dramas at the fictional Crossroads Motel for over two decades.

The series, which was set in a fictional motel in the Midlands, quickly became a cultural phenomenon. It was a serial drama that followed the lives of the staff and guests at the Crossroads Motel, featuring a mix of drama, romance and comedy. The iconic theme tune, with its famous guitar riff, became synonymous with the show and is still remembered by many today.

Throughout its run, the series had its fair share of ups and downs. It experienced numerous cast changes and faced criticism for its low production values. However, it was also hugely popular and had a loyal fan base who tuned in day after day to see what would happen next. The series even spawned its own fan club, The Crossroads Appreciation Society, with thousands of members across the UK.

The final episode of Crossroads was a specially extended programme that screened on Easter Monday in Britain. That episode gave fans closure on the storylines that had been developing over the years and the happily ever after for some of their favourite characters. It was a poignant and emotional moment for the cast, crew and fans as they said goodbye to a show that had been a part of their lives for so long.

The final scene of the episode showed Jill Chance on the back of a motorcycle, leaving the Crossroads Motel behind with her new love. As they rode off into the sunset, Jill was asked what name she would give the hotel she would be running in her new life. In a poignant moment, she replied, “I always thought Crossroads was an awfully good name”. This line has become iconic and is still remembered by fans to this day.

Although the final episode was shown in Britain in 1988, it didn’t reach New Zealand TV screens until 1990. That episode was shown on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 10.40am on the morning of Friday 20 April that year. This delayed screening allowed fans all over the country to say goodbye to the beloved series and its characters.

In 2001 Crossroads was revived by Carlton Television as a now-defunct ITV franchise for both London (weekdays) and the Midlands. The revived series faced much criticism and low ratings and was eventually cancelled again in 2003. However, fans were able to see some of their favourite characters return, including Jane Rossington as Jill Chance. The revived series was also broadcast on TV One, bringing back memories for long-time fans while introducing the series to a new generation.

Today, Crossroads is still remembered fondly by fans and holds a special place in British television history. It may have ended in 1988 but its legacy lives on through reruns, fan clubs and the memories of those who were captivated by the lives and dramas at the Crossroads Motel. As Jill Chance said, Crossroads was indeed an awfully good name.

ANZAC Day 1985

ANZAC Day programming on TVNZ in 1985 commenced at 6.30am on TV One (now TVNZ 1) with a live telecast of the ANZAC Day dawn service at Christchurch’s Cathedral Square Cenotaph. The 1985 parade was graced by the then-Governor-General of New Zealand, Sir David Beattie. TV One temporarily closed down at 7.15am before resuming transmission at 11.30am with Play School.

At 7pm TV One screened Nola: Our Own New Zealand Girl, a TVNZ documentary chronicling the remarkable life of Kiwi actress Nola Luxford, who was living in the US at that time.

The hour-long film explored her multifaceted career as a Hollywood silent film star, stage actress and broadcaster. Notably, she earned the admiration of New Zealanders for providing hospitality to Australian and New Zealand servicemen on leave in New York before their deployment to Europe. Nola, a lifelong advocate for peace, openly voiced her opposition to American nuclear arms policy.

The documentary was produced and directed by Julienne Stretton. Sadly, Nola passed away on 10 October 1994 (in Pasadena, California, USA) at the age of 98.

You can watch the documentary via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

The 1981 film, Gallipoli (starring Mel Gibson), screened at 8.30pm on TV2 (now TVNZ 2). It tells the poignant story of two young Australian idealists who enlist for the adventure of World War I, only to meet their tragic end on the shores of Gallipoli.

The ANZAC Day remembrance is a lasting reminder of the sacrifices made by those who have served. Lest we forget.

It’s in the Bag (in colour)

By hokey! It’s in the Bag was a beloved family fun and quiz show that captivated us as New Zealanders since its humble beginnings on radio in 1954 and, later, television in 1973. Hosted by the late Selwyn Toogood, the show provided entertainment, laughter and the chance for contestants to win exciting prizes.

The first half of the show’s 1975 season culminated in a grand finale at 8pm on the evening of Saturday 26 April 1975 on TV One (now TVNZ 1). That episode was broadcast live to air in colour from the newly built Avalon Television studios in Wellington, making it a landmark in New Zealand television history. Despite the rest of the first half being recorded in monochrome, the final episode brought the vibrant colours of the set and contestants’ costumes to life.

The second half of the season, this time in colour, commenced on Saturday 19 July 1975. To bring the show closer to its viewers nationwide, It’s in the Bag embarked on a tour to record episodes in various provincial towns across New Zealand. Contestants from such towns as Whangarei, Palmerston North and Invercargill - especially the locals - took part in the show, showcasing their trivia knowledge and entertainment skills.

“What’ll it be - the money or the bag?”

Frontline - “For the Public Good”

It was an American judge who said ‘sunlight is the best disinfectant’.

On the evening of Sunday 29 April 1990 at 6.30pm on TV One (now TVNZ 1), TVNZ’s weekly current affairs programme, Frontline, screened a special hour-long documentary entitled “For the Public Good”.

The documentary investigated the connections between business and the Labour Government during the Rogernomics era, alleging that donors to the election campaign had benefitted from the sale of state assets.

In the aftermath TVNZ faced a barrage of defamation lawsuits, prompting the sacking of staff (including reporter Bronwyn Reid and director Chris Wilks, who were involved in the documentary’s production, as well as executive producer Murray McLaughlin). Furthermore, the Frontline office was relocated from Wellington to Auckland, though production was not moved to TVNZ’s Auckland studios until 1991.

A special Broadcasting Standards Authority (BSA) committee determined that the documentary violated standards of veracity, balance and fairness, resulting in eight formal complaints against TVNZ, including the New Zealand Business Roundtable (NZBR) and the Treasury. As a consequence of the NZBR’s complaint, the BSA ordered TVNZ to have TV One going to air without commercial advertising from 6pm until closedown on the evening of Sunday 3 February 1991.

Hi Paddy, are you able to tell me when 1News Midday started please?

@Leotv The exact launch date for TVNZ’s midday news bulletin, initially known as Midday, was Monday 18 March 1996.

When Midday first started it was just an hour-long programme which incorporated a wrap of the morning’s events and the latest updates on the developing news stories of the day from home and overseas, including live crosses to reporters, interviews and in-depth analysis, plus business and sports news and the afternoon’s weather forecast. Susan Wood was the original Midday anchor.

With the arrival of Breakfast in 1997, the format of Midday was reduced to a half hour bulletin and anchored by the same newsreader for Breakfast news that day (e.g. Liz Gunn).

What Now

The first ever edition of TVNZ’s innovative children’s programme, What Now, premiered at 10am on the morning Saturday 9 May 1981 on TV One (now TVNZ 1). The idea was conceived by Rex Simpson, a former TVNZ producer, who later established a children’s department for New Zealand’s first private television network, TV3 (now TV3), in 1989.

Initially, the show ran for half an hour and screened Saturdays at 10am on TV One. The original cast comprised Steve Hooper and four intermediate school-aged children: Merryn, Richard, Oliver, and Lucy, along with Murdoch the dog.

As per Rex Simpson’s vision at the time, the programme aimed to foster healthy leisure attitudes among children. It followed the format of his previous children’s show, How’s That?, which introduced kids to fun and educational activities and was hosted by Stu Dennison (better known as Stu from Nice One) two years prior in 1979.

For their scripted scenes, Steve and the children interacted in a clubhouse set (recorded in TVNZ’s Christchurch studios which were later demolished due to damage from the 2011 earthquake), and these were interspersed with externally filmed games and activity ideas as well as skits by the comedic character, Murray Slack (played by Jon Gadsby in 1981 and Tony Wahren the following year).

In 1982 Lucy and Oliver remained part of the cast while five new children were introduced: Carol, Jeffrey, Debbie, Scott and Adrian. Additional segments were added, such as the illustrated comic book character Captain Leisure (drawn by artist Ashley Smith) and a ‘New Games Competition’ co-hosted by Peter Williams and Yvonne Moore.

Following the 1983 revamp of What Now, the show has welcomed a multitude of recognisable personalities with a diverse line-up consisting of Steve Parr, Alasdair Kincaid (as Frank Flash), Michelle Bracey, Danny Watson, Michele A’Court, Steven Zanoski, Catherine McPherson, Simon Barnett, Stacey Daniels (now Stacey Morrison), Jason Gunn, Aaron Devitt, Fiona Anderson, Darren Young, Anthony Samuels, Shavaughn Ruakere, Steve Joll, Dean Cornish, Jason Fa’afoi, Carolyn Taylor (now Carolyn Keep), Mikee Carpinter (as Props Boy), Vicki Lin, Richard Mills (as DJ Vinyl Richie), Tamati Coffey and many others.

In the 80s Alison Holst captivated us as young Kiwis with her culinary prowess in her recurring cooking segment (“Let’s Cook”), even inspiring a What Now cookbook for budding chefs. Diane Honeybone led us through fitness routines in her exercise class (“Stretch”) while disgraced British TV presenter Phillip Schofield delivered a weekly dose of music in “Shazam! on Saturday”. And lastly, iconic characters like Frank Flash, Clive Grumble (played by Jim Hopkins) and Constable Keith (Keith de Dulin) and Sniff also left an indelible mark on the show.

2001 FA Cup Final

In the 2001 FA Cup final, the concluding game of the 2000/01 FA Cup season which marked the 120th iteration of the world’s oldest football knockout tournament, Arsenal and Liverpool faced off.

This historic event - which kicked off at 2am (NZ time) on the morning of Sunday 12 May 2001 due to the time zone difference - was the first FA Cup final to be held outside England due to the ongoing renovation of Wembley Stadium, its traditional venue. Arsenal appeared in their fourteenth final while Liverpool made their twelfth appearance.

Both teams - being in the top tier of English football, the Premier League - began the competition in the third round. To reach the final, each team had to advance through five rounds. Arsenal’s journey was fairly smooth; they scored six against Queens Park Rangers and then eliminated defending champions Chelsea in the fifth round, eventually coming from behind to defeat local rivals Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final. Liverpool, on the other hand, had a tough time overcoming lower-league opponents Tranmere Rovers and Wycombe Wanderers in the later stages of the competition. The final marked a historic moment as it was the first time two managers born outside the British Isles, French compatriots Arsène Wenger and Gérard Houllier, faced each other in an FA Cup final.

Arsenal dominated the match, controlling the tempo and creating scoring opportunities, but they struggled to penetrate Liverpool’s sturdy defence. Arsenal’s penalty claim in the first half was dismissed when referee deemed that Liverpool’s Stéphane Henchoz did not deliberately handle the ball to prevent Thierry Henry from scoring. Despite Sami Hyypiä’s heroic goal line clearances in the second half, Arsenal finally broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute. Liverpool rallied after conceding and in the 83rd minute, Arsenal’s poor defending allowed Michael Owen to equalise following a free-kick. Owen then sprinted past Arsenal defenders Lee Dixon and Tony Adams, bagging a dramatic second goal two minutes before full-time to seal Liverpool’s victory. Liverpool’s triumph marked another milestone in their historic 2000/01 treble. They had already won the League Cup in February and the UEFA Cup four days later.

Arsenal’s most recent FA Cup final loss occurred in 2021, following their record-breaking seven consecutive wins in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2014, 2015, 2017 and 2020 respectively.

Live broadcast
@OnAir In a span of 11 years, from 1990 to 2000, TV3 (now Three) screened the FA Cup Final live. Subsequently, TVNZ acquired the broadcast rights and on the evening of Saturday 11 May 2001, TV One (now TVNZ 1) screened the 2001 final at 11.20pm. The match kicked off at 2am, following a pre-game build-up that showcased both teams’ journey to the finals and the most remarkable goals from the previous decade of FA Cup competitions.

The last live broadcast of the FA Cup final by TVNZ occurred in 1989, in collaboration with TV3 (now Three). TV3 secured the rights to the final in mid-1988, initially planning to screen it in May 1989, with a launch date set for March. However, this date was postponed to November, prompting TV3 to negotiate with TVNZ for early morning screen time to broadcast the final live.

In April TVNZ declined this request but sought to acquire the rights themselves. TV3 responded on the same day, stating that the rights were not for sale. The Hillsborough disaster temporarily halted the dispute, but the FA ultimately decided to proceed with the 1989 FA Cup final. TV3 then offered to allow TVNZ to screen the final free of charge, provided that TVNZ covered the delivery and transmission costs.

TV3 would retain the rights and requested an on-screen announcement acknowledging their co-operation.

Following TVNZ’s acceptance of the offer Trevor Spitz, TV3’s publicity and promotions manager at the time, hailed the broadcast as ‘TV3’s first major live sporting event’. The network’s official launch date was Sunday 26 November 1989, commencing with a two-hour ‘grand preview’ show from 8pm.

America’s Cup 1995

“The America’s Cup is now New Zealand’s Cup!”

In a momentous triumph that reverberated worldwide, New Zealand etched its name into sporting history by capturing the prestigious America’s Cup in 1995. This remarkable achievement marked only the second time in the competition’s 144 year history that the storied cup had left the United States.

On a crisp Sunday morning of 13 May 1995 (NZT), the world watched with bated breath as the fifth and final race unfolded off the coast of San Diego. New Zealand’s Black Magic (NZL 32), helmed by the legendary Russell Coutts and led by syndicate head Peter Blake, faced off against the American defender, Young America (USA 36), skippered by the renowned Dennis Conner.

What unfolded was a thrilling, nail-biting spectacle. New Zealand dominated from start to finish, showcasing their superior boat design, sailing skills and unwavering resolve. In a testament to their dominance, Black Magic swept all five races and left no doubt as to who deserved to hoist the coveted trophy.

The victory sparked jubilation throughout New Zealand and sent shockwaves through the yachting world. It was a moment of national pride and an affirmation of the country’s prowess in the sport. Sir Peter Blake, a respected yachtsman and environmentalist who later tragically lost his life in 2001, became a revered figure for his leadership and determination.

The America’s Cup victory not only cemented New Zealand’s place in the annals of yachting but also had a profound impact on the nation’s identity. It instilled a sense of confidence and fuelled an ambitious spirit that continues to this day.

Since that historic triumph, New Zealand has continued to excel in the America’s Cup, winning three more times (2000, 2017, 2021). The nation has become a powerhouse in the sport, producing some of the world’s most decorated sailors and innovative boat designers.

New Zealand’s consistent success in the America’s Cup is a testament to the country’s unwavering commitment to excellence, its passion for innovation and its indomitable spirit. The America’s Cup may have once been known as the ‘Old Mug’ but thanks to New Zealand’s remarkable achievements, it will forever be etched in the history books as ‘New Zealand’s Cup’.

Live broadcast
The fifth and final race was televised live on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 7.30am NZT on the morning of Sunday 13 May 1995 due to time zone differences.

Face Value: Her New Life

Face Value, written by Fiona Samuel, comprised three monologues from women with distinct narratives, united by their pursuit of contentment.

In the second monologue, “Her New Life”, Ginette McDonald (famed as Lynn of Tawa) played the role of Steph, the spoiled wife of an affluent advertising mogul. The plot revolved around Steph’s preparations for a close friend’s daughter’s nuptials, all while her husband embarked on a corporate endeavour.

“Her New Life” screened on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 9.40pm on the evening of Sunday 13 May 1995 as part of the channel’s Work of Art strand. The cunningly crafted script defied viewer expectations, with McDonald’s poignant performance eliciting a significant emotional response.

“Her New Life” garnered recognition as a finalist at the Banff and New York Television Festivals.

This was the listing, but I recall TVNZ throwing out that entire schedule once Team NZ won the America’s Cup and went into rolling coverage of sorts.

Ad below:

My recollection of it lines up similar to the video uploader, with coverage going from after the race through until about 10pm that night.
