During 1993 and 1994 respectively, Coronation Street aired Tuesday to Thursday nights at 7.30pm on TV One (now TVNZ 1) with The Bill to follow at 8pm.

In the summer of 1994/95 TVNZ appointed Mike Lattin, an Australian TV executive, to be its director of programming, resulting in Coronation Street being decreased to one double episode on Tuesday evenings. As a result The Bill was rescheduled to air double episodes on Monday nights at 7.30pm.

The decision to condense Coronation Street into only one hour per week, with two back-to-back episodes, was met with disapproval and sparked a large protest from dedicated viewers of the popular British drama. Following numerous petitions and intense media coverage TVNZ eventually revealed that starting in the middle of February 1995, the show would return to its normal schedule of three episodes per week. The double episode would air on Tuesdays at 7.30pm, followed by a third episode lasting 30 minutes on Wednesdays in the same timeslot.

Following the live telecast of the 1994 Lion Red Auckland Cup at Alexandra Park (at 8.35pm), there was a unique event taking place. At 8.45pm there was a one-off special called Coronation Street Remembers Doris Speed which served as a tribute to the late actress. The half hour special honoured the memory of Doris Speed, who had portrayed the iconic character of Annie Walker in the popular soap but had passed away in November 1994.

TV2 (now TVNZ 2) began its revamped Sunday evening line-up at 6pm by airing Riding High, a New Zealand-made kidult drama from South Pacific Pictures and HIT Entertainment. It followed the life of 15-year-old Wendy Thorburn (played by Marama Jackson), whose parents own the Lindentree horse farm and riding school. Wendy is in possession of two horses, Penny and Miss Dixie, and has a lot of adventures with her friends (played by Natalie Dennis and Rebecca Jane Clark, or Tyler-Jane Mitchel as she’s now known).

This series was based on the comics in the German magazine Wendy and had 65 half hour episodes, even though it aired only once a week on a Sunday before moving to double episodes at 4pm on a Saturday afternoon during 1996! But Riding High isn’t the only TV adaptation of the Wendy comics; in 2013, an animated series of the same name was released.

The 1995 version of the famous 60s show, Flipper, premiered at 6.30pm; this was followed by the return of The Great Kiwi Video Show in a summer-friendly format at 7.30pm and then new episodes of The Simpsons at 8pm. Wrapping up the night, TV2 re-aired the incredible 1989 blockbuster, Batman (starring Michael Keaton as the title character and Jack Nicholson as The Joker), at 8.30pm.

Meanwhile, the renowned and critical New Zealand current affairs programme 60 Minutes - obtained by TVNZ and airing every Sunday at 7.30pm on TV2 since 1993 - moved to TV One (now TVNZ 1), maintaining the original timeslot until it was replaced in 2002 by Sunday. In fact, 60 Minutes: A Year of It was a one-off special which looked back at some of the best 60 Minutes stories of 1995.

Paddy, when in 1996 where EastEnders move from TV2 to TV One? I think airing Sunday afternoons on TV2 is odd for a naturally an older skewing programme crammed of youthful nature of that channel. I think British shows should only play on TV One (now TVNZ 1). I thought Squirt would move to TV2 by start of 1997.

Sometime in February or March 1996. Throughout that year EastEnders was stripped five nights a week, Monday to Friday, at 5.25pm as a lead-in to the news.

Squirt made its debut on TV3 (now Three) in September 1996 and ran until the end of June 1997 when TV4 came along. The show was transferred to TVNZ sometime in August that year.

On New Year’s Day 1977 at 1.35pm the Auckland Cup race was covered live on New Zealand television as part of Sport on One, with Phillip Leishman and Glyn Tucker hosting from Ellerslie Racecourse in Auckland. This marked the first time the race (at 2.30pm) had been televised in the country.

Royal Cadenza, ridden by Bob Skelton, claimed victory in the 3200m race with a prize of $75,000. The clock stopped at 3:25.32 as the horse crossed the finish line. Beau’s Demand took second place while Nui Dat came in third.

Do you have any information on TV2’s broadcasts of The Simpsons - specifically when they ran a strand called ‘The Lost Episodes’ or similar during the 1990s? My recollections are these were episodes that didn’t get included in the 6pm/6:30pm repeat cycle but I can’t be sure why or why they were ‘lost’

@OnAir The Simpsons was rerun on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) by stripping five nights a week, Monday to Friday, at 6.30pm from the summer of 1994/95 until 1 December 1995 when it was replaced the next week by reruns of the US sitcom, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, beginning with episode one. The channel, in fact, did not run a strand known as The Simpsons: The Lost Episodes or whatever.

Brand new episodes of The Simpsons commenced with S6, not S7, at 8pm on New Year’s Eve 1995, although the NZ Listener thought it was a rerun.

And plus, S5 of The Simpsons aired Tuesdays at 7.30pm during the first half of 1994 I think.
