Please note that this is an update on the one I posted last year, featuring the inclusion of programme classifications and changes as published in The Press (available via Papers Past).

TV ONE
TV One (now TVNZ 1) changed its programming in the early hours of Monday 4 December 1989 to air an episode of the 80s classic, Miami Vice, at 1.55am instead of the originally scheduled episode of the US sitcom Too Close for Comfort (as published in the NZ Listener and intended for broadcast at 2.25am). This was preceded by the 1976 made-for-TV movie Victory at Entebbe (starring Helmut Berger, Linda Blair, Anthony Hopkins, Burt Lancaster, Elizabeth Taylor, Richard Dreyfuss and Kirk Douglas) as a special midnight feature at 12.05am.

After that, at 2.50am, viewers were then shown live coverage of the second international rugby league test between the Kiwis and France from Stade Albert Domec in Carcasonne. Unfortunately, the French suffered a 0-34 loss to the Kiwis.

TV One closed transmission at 4.30am but resumed later that morning at 9.55am with 15 minutes of in-vision pages from TVNZ’s defunct Teletext service, followed by Play School at 10.10am.

CHANNEL 2

Just before the screening of Ghostbusters as the Sunday Premiere Movie on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2), the first of the “Watch 2 and Win” contests, hosted by Fenella Bathfield (from 3.45 Live!) and Mark Leishman (from That’s Fairy Interesting), was shown at 8.30pm on the evening of Sunday 3 December 1989.

Every evening at 6.30pm and 8.30pm, Channel 2 viewers were asked two questions about that evening’s programmes. By correctly answering these questions and posting them in, they stood a chance to win a nightly cash prize of $1,000. All correct entries would then be entered into a weekly draw for a fabulous trip for two, courtesy of Continental Airlines and TVNZ, to the filming location of one of Channel 2’s popular shows. An example of this was Los Angeles and the live recording of the hit US sitcom, Cheers, with the opportunity to be part of its studio audience.

Below are the three questions and answers based on Channel 2’s programmes airing that night (correct me if the answers to those questions are wrong!).

Q. From ALF, what is the term used for a homeless person by Raquel?
A: Raquel refers to homeless people as ‘urban campers’.

Q. From MacGyver, where does MacGyver get the antidote for the gas from?
A. MacGyver obtains the antidote by using a combination of everyday items such as vinegar, baking soda and chalk. He mixes these ingredients together to create a chemical solution that neutralises the gas.

Q. From Ghostbusters, what does the green ghost do to Dr Venkman when they first meet?
A. The green ghost attacks and tries to possess Dr Venkman when they first meet. Venkman is eventually able to trap the ghost with the proton pack and reverse the possession.

@OnAir New Zealand 2000 was an 11-part documentary series that assessed the way we used to earn our living as a nation and our prospects into the next century. The first five episodes were first shown on TVNZ in 1988 and the last six followed in 1989.

At 8.30pm on the evening of Wednesday 9 December 1998, Tiger Country premiered on TV3 (now Three) as a one-off police drama/telemovie.

Written by Tom Scott and Grant O’Fee, it starred Sean Duffy as Detective Senior Sergeant Tony “Horse” Radisich and Laurie Foell as Detective Sergeant Stephanie Wilson, although the Australian actress who played Wilson was sometimes credited as ‘Laurie Foel’.

With a storyline of investigating the death of a young woman, the team had to confront various false leads before finally coming across the answer they were looking for while Horse’s methods of investigation came under pressure from his superiors.

Trisha Dunleavy’s 2005 book “Ourselves in Primetime: A History of New Zealand Television Drama” reported that NZ On Air had three telemovie concepts - Tiger Country (TV3), Lawless (TVNZ) and Street Legal (TVNZ) - which it could afford to develop into a series. This funding led to the creation of Street Legal, starring actor Jay Laga’aia as Samoan lawyer David Silesi.

You can watch Tiger Country via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

More to come in Part 2.
