Crimewatch, a crime prevention programme produced in cooperation with the New Zealand Police, was fronted by Ian Johnstone with Natalie Brunt (1987-88), Carol Hirschfeld (1989-93), Tiana Tofilau (1994) and Mairanga White (1995-96) as successive co-anchors.
Airing once a month, particularly on a Tuesday night at 8.30pm as an example, the programme used crime reconstructions with actors resembling the perpetrators. Viewer participation played a crucial role in solving many of the cases investigated. Following each edition a Crimewatch Update would air, providing a brief report on viewer responses.
Known as âan arresting show where viewer calls do make a differenceâ, Crimewatch ran on TVNZ from 1987 to 1996. The May 1992 edition of Crimewatch is now available to watch on YouTube.
