Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of the New Zealand Public Service in the early 1980s!

It quickly became apparent that the show was capturing the office shenanigans many of us remember from before the new Lange Government’s economic restructuring and the introduction of Rogernomics in 1984.

At 8pm on the evening of Monday 31 August 1981, the award-winning sitcom Gliding On premiered on TV One (now TVNZ 1). Based on Roger Hall’s hit play “Glide Time”, the series satirised the bureaucratic paper-pushing working life of early 1980s Kiwi life and ran for five years (1981-85). It won several Feltex Television Awards, including Best Male and Female Actors, Best Entertainment (1982) and Best Drama (1983).

Gliding On cast
The Gliding On cast - Standing from the left: Michael Haigh (as Jim), Susan Wilson (Beryl), Ray Henwood (Hugh), Ross Jolly (John), Katy Beasley (then Katy Platt, as Raewyn) and Barry Hill (Wally). Ken Blackburn (the boss) sits at the desk.

The very first episode, titled “No Smoke Without Fire”, set the scene with executive officers calling for first aid, civil defence and fire drills to counter any potential disaster. The late Michael Haigh’s character Jim, whose unforgettable performance won him the Feltex Award for Best Male Actor in 1983, made a bet to see if he could quit smoking for two weeks.

Was this the British series?

Yes. The Trap Door was originally shown on British television in 1986. The plot revolves around the daily lives and the misadventures of a group of monsters living in a castle. These include a blue creature called Berk, a spider-like creature called Drutt and Boni who was a skull of unknown origin. Although the emphasis was on humour and the show was marketed as a children’s programme, it drew much from horror and dark fantasy.

The show has since become a cult favourite and remains one of the most widely recognised British children’s shows of the 1980s.

@TV4 @nztv @NuStraya @OnAir These are the listings for the final Saturday of October 1989 - just three days before I was born.

TV One (now TVNZ 1) opened transmission at 7am that morning and stayed on air all night due to its live coverage of the second international league test (Great Britain v Kiwis) from Leeds. That test match, which was beamed in via satellite and shown at 2.45am NZT on the morning of Sunday 29 October, was followed at 4.30am by full delayed coverage of the All Blacks’ tour match against Llanelli.

The Great Britain v Kiwis highlights were shown at 6am and ran for half an hour, with a full replay of the Llanelli v All Blacks match to follow at 6.30am and Sunday programming from 8.15am.

TV One ended transmission at 12.15am after showing a repeat of the BBC sitcom, I Didn’t Know You Cared.

We were told it was shown in colour in NZ? Because it was ironic that NZ saw it in colour but Australian viewers couldn’t.

@OnAir @TV4 @nztv @medianz @TelevisionAU It’s my birthday today (31 October) and on this day in 1973, colour television arrived in New Zealand.

The entire NZBC TV network (AKTV2, WNTV1, CHTV3 and DNTV2) was converted to colour at 7.45pm on the evening of Wednesday 31 October 1973. The first programme to be shown in colour on NZBC TV that night was the first episode of the US adventure series, Thrill Seekers (at 7.48pm); it was hosted by Chuck Connors and featured people who did dangerous stunts.

On the same night, two New Zealand-made programmes were shown in colour; they were Inquiry and Sporting Life. An episode of the US sitcom, The Odd Couple, was also shown in colour.
