@TelevisionAU On the evening of Thursday 2 May 1985, TVNZ launched a late night chat/variety show called Saunders & Sinclair.

Hosted from Auckland by Catherine Saunders and the late Geoff Sinclair (from the now-defunct Radio Pacific), the show was described by the NZ Listener as ‘an hour of chat, charm and cheek’ with musical direction by Tony Baker and his band, David Hartnell’s Hollywood gossip and weekly guests. It aired Thursdays at 10pm on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) and ran for six weeks.

In July that year, Saunders & Sinclair was replaced by Tonight with Catherine Saunders hosting the retooled show, and by mid-1986 she was replaced as host by Sue Kellaway, who had been a face of NZ TV in the past before moving to Australia and appearing in various programmes (e.g. Good Morning Australia on 10 and, later, the Today Show on Nine).

As TVNZ’s spring season programming began in August that year, Tonight was transferred from its later Thursday night timeslot (10pm) to Wednesdays at the new, earlier time of 9pm.

Tonight ended on the evening of Wednesday 29 October 1986 at 9pm on TV2.

Hey @PaddyTePou I’ve been looking for Thingee’s last appearance on What Now. Do you happen to have any idea what month that was? I’m sure it was 1997. Cheers.

@Michael_S Hrm. Thingee made his last appearance on our screens sometime in 1997 but I don’t exactly know what month. It’s a bit of a mystery.

How many listings do you have between July and December 1997? I’m sure it happened between those.

Thanks to the hard work and generosity of a fellow archival TV researcher the NZ Listener’s TV listing pages from the 1974 to early 1998 are available as PDFs. These include listings from 1997.

At 8pm on the evening of Saturday 25 August 1984 on TV One (now TVNZ 1), an episode of the Roger Hall sitcom, Gliding On, saw John (Ross Jolly) concluding that a love of stamps made the boss (Ken Blackburn) a natural fit for Mastermind - next thing, the stores branch staff were gathering around with imaginary cameras and desk lamps, to help him practise for the pressures of the facing quiz master himself, the late Peter Sinclair. Meanwhile the team attempted to score another victory by getting an astrological chart made for a racehorse.

You can watch the Gliding On episode via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

@Michael_S Still not sure.
