Paddy, It would be much better if Ian Cross suggested that TVNZ should focus only on TV One should be non-commerical and sell TV2 off to a private company back in 1986 because I think it would benefit TV2 well for competition for TV3.

Produced by the Wellington-based Gibson Group for TVNZ and hosted by high profile media man, Bill Ralston, with reporters Mark Crysell and Miriama Kamo and film reviewer Chris Knox, backch@t distinguished itself from previous arts programmes by looking at the arts through a broad current affairs lens.

Initially, each episode ran for a full 90 minutes and contained at least one panel discussion, some magazine-style items, an interview, as well as film, CD, and book reviews. backch@t screened at lunchtime (12 noon) on a Sunday afternoon, with a repeat at around 10.30pm that night.

backch@t first aired on the afternoon of Sunday 22 March 1998 and came out guns blazing with a panel debate about Tania Kovats’s controversial artwork ‘Virgin in a Condom’. The sculpture caused national upset when it was exhibited at Te Papa in 1998 in a collection of new British art. Other feature items included the Royal New Zealand Ballet touring the provinces, Wellington’s International Arts Festival, and Chris Knox reviewing the John Sayles movie Passion Fish.

backch@t was named “Best Lifestyle Programme” at TV Guide Television Awards three times in a row (1998, 1999, 2000). The programme ran for 75 episodes over its three-year run.

You can watch the first episode of backch@t via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

At 8pm on the evening of Wednesday 24 July 1996 - coinciding with day five of the 1996 Atlanta Olympics - a brand new show made its debut on TV One (now TVNZ 1).

TeleBingo was a co-production between TVNZ and an Australian TV producer, Denis Spencer (under the banner of Denis Spencer Productions, which produced Showcase, McDonald’s Young Entertainers, Strassman and The Mole), in association with the Lotteries Commission (now Lotto NZ).

Hosted by Simon Barnett (who was replaced in 1998 by Grant Walker) and Ingrid Mole, TeleBingo was described by the NZ Listener as ‘a game show in which contestants and home viewers get the chance to play TeleBingo and win prizes’.

There were two components, a lottery and a game show - see below for an explanation of how TeleBingo worked, according to Wikipedia.

Lottery
Between 34 and 75 numbers were drawn from 75. Viewers at home had to match the numbers on-screen with numbers on a mini bingo board. These could be purchased at $2 each for a minimum of two tickets. There were three divisions:

  • Four Corners: If you got each of the three corner numbers (the other was just a tick) before 27 numbers had been called, you won Four Corners.
  • Cross: If you got the eight numbers that made a diagonal cross (plus the top-left corner tick) before 34 numbers had been called, you won Cross.
  • Bingo. The big one – they keep drawing numbers until a Bingo winner had been found amongst all tickets for that draw. If there was one before 34 numbers had been called, they kept going until 34 numbers were called. The record was 37 Bingo winners.

If there were no winners in a division, the respective prize pool was carried over to the next division.

Game show
Three contestants appeared on the show. They started with $125 and a corner square, they earned $25 and another corner square for every question right and lost $25 (but not their corner square) for every question wrong. At the Cross round, they were given two squares as a head-start towards Cross. After Cross was earned, random squares were given with every correct answer until either a viewer or a contestant got Bingo. There were two possible outcomes as to the end:

  • If a contestant got Bingo first, they kept going until a viewer got Bingo, and then any contestants who got Bingo would come away with double their final total.
  • If a viewer got Bingo first, it went to “Run For Your Money”, in which the contestants had 60 seconds to get Bingo, and anyone who got it would come away with double their final total.

The contestant with the most money then went to a memory board, where he or she had to reveal two matching squares to get a certain prize, and then he or she had the option of taking away the prizes or risking them for more the next week.

TeleBingo bowed out on the evening of Wednesday 27 June 2001 and was replaced a month later by Risk.

Without further ado, more NZ TV listings to come in Part 2.

The feature-length final episode ever made of an 80s classic, Magnum PI, was shown on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 8.30pm on the evening of Thursday 4 August 1988.

Meanwhile, RTR Megamix, a brand new music show from the Ready to Roll (RTR) franchise, made its debut and began with ‘a mini-concert featuring Madonna’ at around 4.25pm that afternoon (during After School). Each RTR Megamix show typically included up to six music videos by no more than two particular artists and ran for a full 30 minutes.

The YouTube link contains the last few moments of in-vision pages from TVNZ’s now-defunct Teletext service (Teletext in Vision), a brief intro welcoming viewers to another day’s transmission on Network Two and a rundown of Thursday’s programmes, beginning with an episode of the daytime US soap, The Young and the Restless (at 11.15am).
