@OnAir In June 1989 TVNZ introduced an on-screen programme classification system which was based on Australia’s until 1993. The original classifications and timebands were:

  • G - General, i.e. approved for general viewing and suitable for screening at any time;
  • PGR - Parental Guidance Recommended, i.e. suitable for screening between 9am-4pm on weekdays and after 7pm until 6am on any day; and
  • AO - Adults Only, i.e. suitable for screening between 12-3pm on weekdays (except during school and public holidays) and after 8.30pm until 5am on any day.

News, current affairs, sport and live-to-air programmes were exempt from classification.

In some circumstances, some programmes were yet to be classified. An asterisk (*) indicated that, as listed in some newspapers (e.g. The Press), the programme classification was unavailable at the time of going to print - so viewers had to look for it on screen.

The earlier part of Saturday afternoons on South Pacific Television (SPTV - now TVNZ 2), from noon until 2.30pm, was rebranded as Max and Dinah.

Max and Dinah was introduced in February 1978 where the late Dinah Shore hosted her own talk/variety show, Dinah!, featuring interviews with an array of well known celebrities from Hollywood and beyond. Back home, the selection and local personalities were introduced by the late Max Cryer.

By the end of April that year, Max and Dinah was renamed Max and Dinah and Friends.

Max and Dinah and Friends included two portions of Dinah! (i.e. part one at 12.30pm and part two, 1.30pm), two instalments of a daytime US soap (Another World - i.e. part one at noon and part two, 2pm) and a half hour US sitcom (The Bob Newhart Show - at 1pm). All of which were introduced by Max Cryer, who blended the mix with local personalities.

By the start of July, Max and Dinah and Friends had disappeared and a midday movie replaced it, and by September the US soap Search for Tomorrow was moved from its weekday timeslot (at 3pm) to Saturdays at midday in a double episode format.

When SPTV merged with TV One (now TVNZ 1) to form TVNZ in February 1980, Search for Tomorrow remained in its usual timeslot until October 1983 when it was replaced by the British rural soap, Emmerdale Farm (now Emmerdale).

In February 1990 Another World was brought back to NZ TV screens by TV3 (now Three) and screened five days a week, Monday to Friday, until February 1992 when it was replaced by the daytime US talk show, Donahue.

Strangers, a six-part drama of mystery and magic from award-winning author Margaret Mahy, made its debut on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 6pm on the evening of Sunday 18 June 1989.

A young Martin Henderson (in his screen debut), Amber McWilliams (who went on to star in The New Adventures of Black Beauty) and Hamish McFarlane (fresh from movie The Navigator) were featured, along with deaf actor Sonia Pivac. Between them, they created their own clubhouse and secret society called Zan-Em-Mor-Kel (the first few letters of each of their names: Zane, Emma, Morgan and Kelsey). Also featured in the six-parter was a young Joel Tobeck as Ludo, a mysterious fire-eating magician.

And speaking of golf, round three of the US Open was broadcast live on Network Two at 7am that morning with highlights in Sunday Grandstand on TV One (now TVNZ 1) later in the day. Once the live coverage ended (at approx 10am), Network Two temporarily closed down transmission and started again at 10.50am with 15 minutes of in-vision pages from TVNZ’s now-defunct Teletext service, followed by Waka Huia (at 11.05am).

At 8pm on the evening of Wednesday 24 June 1992 on TV One (now TVNZ 1), TVNZ introduced a new programme about homes and architecture.

Called Open Home, this programme aired on TVNZ from 1992-95 and explored grand designs and their architects of the 90s, renovation dilemmas and Kiwi personalities in their houses. Late builder (and future mayor of Dunedin) Dave Cull was accompanied as successive co-hosts by actress Jennifer Ward-Lealand (1992) and NZ TV personalities Susan Wood (1993-94) and Jude Dobson (1995).

You can watch the first ever edition of Open Home - featuring items on architect Roger Walker and late DJ Kevin Black - via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

Hey @PaddyTePou another question. Would you happen to know whether Thingee really hosted After 2 from 1989 to 1991?

In fact, Jason Gunn hosted both After 2 (weekday afternoons) and The Breakfast Club (Saturday mornings - just before What Now with Catherine McPherson and Simon Barnett) but there was no mention of Thingee (voiced by the late Alan Henderson) in both shows… yet. However, from my point of view, Thingee made occasional appearances since After School.

With After 2 and The Breakfast Club ended and the duration of What Now extended to three hours long in 1992, Jason and Thingee co-hosted two new after-school shows on weekdays - Jase TV and The Son of a Gunn Show.

Paddy, Have you have any listings that Australian medical drama Medivac ever broadcasted in New Zealand?

Sorry, I don’t have any of it. Furthermore, it is hard for me to find an overseas programme that was broadcast on NZ TV in the late 1990s and beyond.

The original title for the Australian medical drama was Medivac, which, according to Wikipedia, was also known as Adrenaline Junkies overseas. It was set in the emergency department of Brisbane’s fictional Bethlehem West Hospital, where a dedicated medical team works in the demanding world of emergency medicine. The team specialises in the evacuation of disaster areas, journeying by helicopter to remote areas inaccessible by ambulance. They also work in the city streets and the suburbs involving themselves with the patients, their families and the police.

Medivac featured New Zealanders Grant Bowler, Simone Kessell, Stephen Lovatt and - fresh from the movie Once Were Warriors - Rena Owen.

I am trying to focus on late 2000s listings at the moment including putting those TV Listings where The Young and the Restless broadcasted for the final time on TVNZ. Late 2000s and much of the 2010s saw US Dramas dominating TV One’s schedule largely replacing British focused content usually from BBC and ITV, these American Drama’s screened on TV One such as Cold Case, Close to Home, Criminal Minds, Castle, Eleventh Hour, Person of Interest, Prime Suspect USA, Unforgettable and The Following these could have screened on TV2. TV2 is usually American drama focused for TVNZ.

@OnAir At 8pm on the evening of Sunday 11 September 1988, TV One (now TVNZ 1) screened a 50 minute drama - Talkback.

Directed by Alison Maclean (who co-wrote the script with Geoff Chapple), Talkback told the story about Jonah (played by Lucy Sheehan), who worked as the panel operator on an Auckland talkback station. When Roger (Alistair Douglas), the regular host on the midnight-to-dawn shift, walked out Jonah was thrust into the job. But the question, according to the NZ Listener, was, why did Roger leave?

Here are some other questions.

  • Will Jonah’s on-again, off-again affair with Roger survive the night?
  • And what effect will the haunting voices of nighttime Auckland, including the mysterious Jim (Peter Tait), have on the novice host?

The made-for-television drama contained offensive language, including some F-words, despite the fact that it was shown in an 8pm timeslot that night.

You can watch Talkback via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

@OnAir Due to high demand from advertisers, the first weekend of July 1989 marked the introduction of commercial advertising on NZ TV on Sundays (except between 6am and noon).

As Sunday advertising began on 2 July that year, TVNZ received a large number of complaints from viewers after it changed its format almost a month earlier (5 June) to have commercials inside programmes instead of between them, putting 2-3 breaks in half hour programmes and 4-5 breaks in hour-long programmes.

The complaints - according to Aline Sandilands, TVNZ’s head of public relations at the time - were for interruptions to British programmes not made with provision for commercial breaks.

Furthermore, locally made programme formats were changed in order to allow commercial breaks to be inserted for broadcast on a typical Sunday. Examples included Frontline and the music programme CV, but some Sunday programmes like Opus and Mobil Masterpiece Theatre would remain advertising-free.
