The finals of After 2 (with Jason Gunn) and 3.45 Live! (with Fenella Bathfield and Rikki Morris) screened on this day (8 November) in 1989, as did the regional news programmes in Channel 2’s (now TVNZ 2) 5.45-6pm timeslot.

Auckland’s Top Half and Wellington’s Today Tonight were axed by TVNZ, but Christchurch’s The Mainland Touch and Dunedin’s The South Tonight continued for another year with funding support from NZ On Air (formerly known as the Broadcasting Commission).

The regional news programmes - which were broadcast on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 5.45pm and preceded by a Bugs Bunny cartoon (at 5.20pm) and a delayed broadcast of Te Karere (at 5.35pm) for South Island viewers - were axed altogether at the end of 1990 and their final broadcasts were on 14 December that year. For North Island viewers Te Karere was broadcast live (at 5.20pm) and followed by a sitcom rerun (at 5.30pm).

@TelevisionAU Over on TV3 (now Three), two Australian classics - Hey Dad…! and Rafferty’s Rules - aired on New Zealand television. Hey Dad…! was a sitcom about a solo dad (played by disgraced actor Robert Hughes) and his problems with his domestic life, while Rafferty’s Rules was a drama about a tough senior magistrate who came down from the bush to hold court in Manly, NSW.

John Wood, who played the title character in Rafferty’s Rules, went on to appear in every episode of the much-beloved Australian police drama, Blue Heelers (1994-2006), and won a Gold Logie for his performance in 2006. The series also featured New Zealander Catherine Wilkin.

Hi, Paddy. Absolutely love the work you do and I appreciate it! Sorry, to ask, but it would have been in January 1988, but I’m just wondering if TVNZ showed the TV series (2 episodes) Hitlers SS?

@Skud Hitler’s SS, as a telemovie, screened on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 8.30pm on the evening of Wednesday 27 January 1988 and ran for almost three hours, i.e. 2 hours, 50 minutes (including commercial breaks).

Hi, Paddy. Sorry, but I have memories of watching the WWF Wresting in 1988-90. It was extremely popular at the time. I recall the WWF Superstars of Wrestling started on a Thursday night in either June or July 1988. I was just wondering if you would be so kind as to confirm this if/when you ever have some time. Thank you heaps in advance.

@Skud In fact, TVNZ’s spring season began in the last week of July 1988 and WWF Superstars of Wrestling first appeared on New Zealand TV screens on the evening of Thursday 28 July that year. It was shown on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 10.48pm that night (following the late newsbreak at 10.45pm). Before that, the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde (starring Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway) was Network Two’s ‘Thursday feature’.

Bit weird how TV One managed to get MADtv, would’ve been more suitable for a TV2 or 3 audience.

@LiamP When MADtv began screening in 1997/98 it was shown on TV One (now TVNZ 1) in a late night slot, despite the fact that the US sketch comedy series was designed for a younger audience and TV One itself was aimed at a more mature audience. Within a few years, MADtv was transferred to TV2 (now TVNZ 2).
