@Michael_S @foxyrover There is a new look for Facebook which allows me to switch between my timeline and my Facebook page, although all the listings haven’t been deleted. (NB: You must log in before you can find the old NZ TV listings, especially from 1991.)

Additionally, I can only post 20 images (or less) in a single post at a time, according to Media Spy.

The Channel 2 Coca-Cola Music Weekend ran on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) for a whopping 46 hours, from 10pm Friday 24 November until 8pm Sunday 26 November 1989. It was a marathon of music films, documentaries, live concerts, music specials and wall-to-wall music videos, which included:

  • CV Viewer Requests: CV hosts Larnie Gifford, Robert Rakete and Mark Tierney introduced 2.5 hours of music videos as requested by viewers via postal mail.
  • Kiwi Rock 2 - Don’t You Forget It!: A two-hour compilation of 100% New Zealand music videos from 1964 to 1989 - “She’s a Mod” (by Ray Columbus and the Invaders) to “She’s a Mod/Mod Rap” (by Double J and Twice the T).

Described by TVNZ as ‘New Zealand television’s first stereo broadcast’, the Channel 2 Coca-Cola Music Weekend coincided with the introduction of NICAM stereo sound which was initially available on Channel 2 in the Auckland region. By the early 1990s, NICAM stereo was extended to Wellington. NICAM stereo was not rolled out to the rest of the country or onto TV One (now TVNZ 1) until 1996 and for some regions, such as Southland, NICAM was not available until 2001.

The late Sir Paul Reeves officially opening TV3 (now Three). Image courtesy of Three and The University of Auckland (Chapman Archive).

Also on this day (26 November) in 1989, New Zealand’s first private television network, TV3 (now Three), made its debut. It began transmission at 8pm that evening with ‘a two hour preview of what to expect and what will screen on TV3 - involving programme previews, interviews with network stars, personality profiles and much more’.

The network - presented in NICAM stereo since launch - was officially opened by the late Sir Paul Reeves, the Governor-General of New Zealand at the time, and regular programming started at 7am the next morning with the Early Bird Show, introduced by Russell Rooster, Kiri Kea and friends. Cartoons on the Early Bird Show included Garfield, DuckTales, The Wuzzles and Dennis the Menace, and the news was read on the half hour by Joanna Paul.

Extra: Tuesday 9 December 1980
from the NZ Listener

The national final of the children’s quiz show, The W Three Show, was broadcast on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 4.30pm on the afternoon of Tuesday 9 December 1980.

After 39 weeks, intermediate school winners from the northern, central and southern regions - i.e. students from Kirkwood, St Bernard’s and Remuera intermediate schools - competed for a state-of-the-art colour TV in the national final, which was recorded at TVNZ’s Christchurch studios. Future MP, minister and Speaker of the House, Lockwood Smith asked the questions and the late Relda Familton (a National Radio/RNZ National overnight host until her death in 1995) was his co-host and scorekeeper.

The national finalists were quizzed on subjects including geometry, the years 6 BC to 30 AD, Shakespeare quotations, deserts, anatomy, historic England and, appropriately for the quizmaster, cabinet ministers.

You can watch the 1980 final of The W Three Show via NZ On Screen by clicking its link below.

On this day (3 December) in 1989, the Nissan Mobil 500 was broadcast on TVNZ for the very last time. That year’s race was won by Italy’s Emanuele Pirro and Roberto Ravaglia (Schnitzer Motorsport). Within the next year New Zealand’s first private television network, TV3 (now Three), secured the broadcast rights to the Nissan Mobil 500, which took place on Wellington’s waterfront until the final running of the race in 1996.

Other highlights on TVNZ that day included a new local puppet/variety series called Country Kiwi and the Cool City Cat (based on TVNZ’s mascots, the Goodnight Kiwi/TV Kiwi and the Cat), the NZ TV premiere of the 1984 film Ghostbusters, the te reo Māori screening of an E Tipu E Rea drama called “Te Moemoeā (The Dream)” and the second international league test between the Kiwis and France at Carcasonne. For non-Māori speakers, an English translation for “Te Moemoeā (The Dream)” was broadcast on National Radio (now RNZ National) at the same time as it was shown on TVNZ.

Over on 3 there was Nabisco Masters tennis, the arrival of 60 Minutes to NZ TV screens, the premiere of the US sitcom Murphy Brown (with Candice Bergen in the title role) and the Sunday night double feature - Outrageous Fortune (starring Bette Midler and Shelley Long) and Raising Arizona (starring Nicolas Cage and Holly Hunter).

those races on the waterfront were awesome, I can still hear Clint Brown calling " and Longhurst has hit the wall!"
I couldn’t imagine such a carbon- hungry event in Welly nowadays, eh!
