As TVNZ’s music brand, RTR (Ready to Roll), celebrated its 15th birthday on the morning of Saturday 25 August 1990, the RTR banner became what was known as “Pepsi RTR” following a naming rights agreement with Pepsi. Coincident with that, RTR Sounz! and RTR Countdown became “Pepsi RTR Sounz!” and “Pepsi RTR Countdown” respectively.
Stepping aside, Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) had two new shows premiere - “New Zealand’s Funniest Home Videos” and “Doogie Howser MD”.
Hosted by (Sir) Ian Taylor, formerly of Spot On fame, “New Zealand’s Funniest Home Videos”, the comedy clip show, was really New Zealand’s funniest home videos plus America’s and Japan’s funniest home videos. There were prizes to be won here and there was also a chance to compare the quality of our foul-ups with those of our favourite tourists.
Then, from Steven Bochco, the man who brought you “Hill Street Blues” and “LA Law”, a new sitcom - “Doogie Howser MD”. Doogie (played by a very young Neil Patrick Harris, who went on to star in “How I Met Your Mother”) was 16 and a qualified doctor of medicine who was a second-year resident at the Eastman Medical Centre. And, though he was an intellectual genius with qualifications to prove it, Doogie still had the usual share of teenage angst to cope with - like how to kiss a girl for the first time.
Here’s Doogie talking to his pal, Vinnie (played by Max Casella): “I’m gonna tell her her hair smells great. Then I lean in and sniff her shampoo - girls love it when you smell their hair. Then I give her a lick on her lobule auriculare…”
Vinnie: “You’re gonna do it in public?”
Doogie: “It’s her earlobe, stupid.”
