Coronation Street first appeared on our screens on 16 June 1964, although television in New Zealand was not fully networked at the time and overseas programmes had to be physically flown across the country. This meant different broadcast dates across four different television stations: AKTV2 (Auckland), WNTV1 (Wellington), CHTV3 (Christchurch) and DNTV2 (Dunedin).
When Coro came to New Zealand for the first time, it originally screened only once a week on a Tuesday - for instance, Coronation Street aired on Christchurch’s CHTV3 at 8.35pm on the evening of Tuesday 10 May 1966. Within three years, the soap went to twice a week.
These days Coronation Street screens on TVNZ 1 at around 9.30pm every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evening (subject to scheduling), with a repeat screening the next day at 2pm. In Britain the soap is produced as three hour-long episodes a week (as at 7 March 2022) and broadcast on ITV at 8pm every Monday, Wednesday and Friday (local time), and the episodes playing on TVNZ are ‘express from the UK’, i.e. one week after they are first shown on ITV.
Used to be 18 months behind before June 2018 before TVNZ changed it to being 1 week behind Britain

What is the series about?
Amazing
@OnAir “What is a Computer?” was a half hour factual programme from Spanish broadcaster Telemundi… I think. It was described by the NZ Listener as ‘a humorous description of the workings and application of a computer in various situations’.
@Sheldon_Betteridge “Free Time” was like a school holiday version of TVNZ’s most popular afternoon programme, “After School”. It aired in the same timeslot as “After School” but only during the school holidays.
Thanks for confirming that this great show aired here all these years ago.
I find it interesting how the Wombles was put in prime time. Elisabeth Beresford’s other creation, Bertie the Bat, got that treatment by Channel Television in the UK 15-20 years later.

Pioneering soap opera “Close to Home” premiered on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 7pm on the evening of Monday 12 May 1975. For just over eight years, middle New Zealand found their mirror in the life and times of Wellington’s Hearte clan.
At its peak in 1977, nearly a million viewers tuned in twice a week (on Mondays and Tuesdays at 7pm) to watch the serial, which was co-created by series writer Michael Anthony Noonan and producer Tony Isaac. They initially only agreed to make it on condition they got approval for a TV One/NFU co-production, “The Governor”.
The popular family saga carved a regular niche for local drama on screen; the demands of creating a regular show helped develop the skills of Kiwi actors and crew.
You can watch the first ever episode of “Close to Home” online, via NZ On Screen, by clicking its link below.

@OnAir The New Zealand cricket team toured England in the 1990 season to play two One Day Internationals (ODIs) against England, with a three-match Test series to follow. England won the Texaco Trophy on faster run rate.
On the evening of Wednesday 23 May 1990, both TV One (now TVNZ 1) and Sky Sport broadcast live coverage from Headingley Stadium in Leeds of the first ODI.
TV One’s first ODI coverage included the first few hours of play (running through to closedown at 12.30am, according to the NZ Listener), with a half hour break for “One Network News” at 10pm and an hour-long highlights package the next morning at 7.30am before TV One ended transmission. It resumed transmission again at 9.55am with in-vision pages from TVNZ’s now-defunct Teletext service, followed by “Play School” (at 10.10am).
Sky Sport, on the other hand, had full overnight coverage of that match until closedown at 6am!
The second ODI, played at The Oval in London, was broadcast on TV One from 9.30pm on the evening of Friday 25 May 1990 and ran right through the night with breaks for “One Network News” (at 10pm) and rugby league highlights. Live coverage concluded at 6.30am the next morning with the 1981 film “The Chosen” - starring Maximilian Schell, Rod Steiger and Robby Benson - as TV One’s early morning movie, followed at 8.15am by the wildlife documentary “Durrell’s Ark”, then “Floyd on Fish” at 9am.
Sky Sport’s second ODI coverage ran for 45 minutes, from 11.15pm (right after live coverage of a NSWRL/Winfield Cup match) until midnight when coverage continued over on TV One.
