Classic NZ TV Listings

This Week’s TV: 29 March - 4 April 1986
from the NZ Listener

TVNZ commenced 24-hour weekend television on the evening of Friday 4 April 1986. Within the next week, TV One (now TVNZ 1) went to air Mondays to Thursdays from 9am until around midnight and stayed on air from 9am Friday until closedown at around midnight on Sunday.

24-hour weekend television via TV One was short-lived as the result of a dispute with record companies, who were demanding payment for video clips that were becoming increasingly expensive to produce. TVNZ refused to pay to screen them on the grounds that this was ‘a form of sales promotion’, and its music shows were taken off the air.

Nightly closedown on TV One was reinstated, with the channel commencing transmission at 7am Saturdays, 8am Sundays and 9am on weekdays.

I wonder if you could upload TV listings from the late 90s to the early 2000s that featured kids tv programming on TV2 and TV3 between 1996 - 2004.

Thanks for your suggestion, @SClubDreamer99. For now, I’ll put it in my mind.

This week’s TV: 4-10 April 1987
from the NZ Listener

In 1987 TVNZ launched two new programmes - “Tagata Pasifika” and “Waka Huia”. Both of which were produced in-house by TVNZ’s now-defunct Māori Programmes department, under the direction of the late Ernie Leonard.

The first edition of “Tagata Pasifika”, presented by Niuean broadcaster Foufou Susana Hukui, was broadcast on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) at 11am on the morning of Saturday 4 April 1987. It included items on Cook Islands dance, the ‘Otara flea market’, and NZ work schemes for islanders. Samoan Maligi Evile presented “Pacific News” (a review of the week’s news from around the Pacific Islands), while Vainetutai Temaeva-Nicholls covered the Cook Islands.

Since the beginning of time, “Tagata Pasifika” broke ground as the first television programme in New Zealand to focus on Pacific Island stories and Pacific Islanders, although earlier programme “See Here” was aimed at both Māori and Pacific audiences and screened in a lunchtime slot on weekdays.

Meanwhile, the first edition of the longest running Māori language programme “Waka Huia”, presented by Hemana Waaka, aired on TV2 at 10am on the morning of Sunday 5 April 1987. A ‘waka huia’ is traditionally a treasure box to hold the revered huia feather.

That edition included a review of the status of te reo Māori; a feature on Te Waka Huia, winners of the 1986 Polynesian Festival in Christchurch; and an interview with Dame Mira Szaszy, former president of the Māori Women’s Welfare League, who talked of her aspirations for Māori women. In addition, an interview with Sir James Henare was also featured.

Since its very first edition, “Waka Huia” - created by the late Whai Ngata - has travelled extensively to retell tribal histories, and sets a high standard of reo, seeking to interview only fluent speakers. It has also covered some of the social and political concerns of the day, taking a snapshot of Māori history, and it’s described by NZ On Screen as ‘a tāonga for future generations’.

Nowadays, “Tagata Pasifika” and “Waka Huia” are produced for TVNZ by SunPix and Scottie Productions as separate, independent production companies. This year they are celebrating 35 years on air.

You can watch the first edition of each programme via NZ On Screen by clicking one of the respective links above.

And speaking of mainstream programmes on TVNZ, “Country Calendar” moved to the earlier timeslot of 6.05pm on Sunday evenings on TV One (now TVNZ 1) and “Fair Go” shifted from TV One to TV2 (well, briefly) and aired at 8pm on Tuesday evenings.

This week’s TV: 1-4 April 1975
from the NZ Listener

“Ladies and gentlemen, you are very welcome. Television One is here at last.” - Dougal Stevenson

@OnAir These are the listings from TV One’s first week of broadcasting.

On 1 April 1975, the NZBC was split into three separate state owned corporations: Radio New Zealand (RNZ), Television One (TV One) and Television Two (TV2).

The existing NZBC television network became TV One, and was based at the Avalon Television Centre in Lower Hutt which opened transmission on the afternoon of Tuesday 1 April 1975 at 2pm with a five-minute news bulletin. The new Avalon Television Centre was officially opened about a fortnight earlier.

TV One’s two-hour opening night special, live from Avalon, was shown at 7pm. It was not an auspicious beginning, with fluffed lines, faulty microphones, a camera failure and an atmosphere of uncertainty among many of the performers themselves about the hyped-up image they were called on to present.

The phones went crazy with complaints as viewers reacted to TV One’s deliberate effort that it was simply not a continuation of NZBC TV under a different name.

Alan Morris, who (along with Allan Martin) had returned from a senior executive position with the ABC in Australia, was brought in as CEO of TV One. An ABC colleague, Bill Munro, was appointed TV One’s head of programmes and Munro brought his knowledge of the competitive Australian television scene with him.

The result was that TV One went to air with a strongly competitive style and an emphasis on personalities and presentation which took us as New Zealanders by surprise - particularly as there was no competitor on air at the time.

The image was softened in response to the outbreak of criticism from what Munro identified as ‘the clobbering machine’, but it certainly served to shake viewers loose from NZBC expectations.

The approach eventually developed over the next few months was to present a coherent, packaged, competitive television network, led by identifiable personalities including newsreaders Dougal Stevenson and Bill McCarthy, and weather girl Tina Carline.

Doug Eckhoff was appointed TV One’s head of news and current affairs.

The network news was moved to the earlier timeslot of 6.30pm (from 7pm on NZBC TV) and the regional magazines were dropped and replaced with a local opt-out of up to 10 minutes within the main evening news bulletin.

A mid-evening news and current affairs programme, “Tonight at Nine”, screened at 9pm and was described as ‘the country’s first serious effort at nightly current affairs’. It was produced by Bill Earl and the team included Shaun Brown, Terry Carter, Ian Johnstone, Spencer Jolly, Murray McLaughlin, Barbara Magner, Gillian Woodward and a young Lindsay Perigo and Simon Walker, with occasional contributions by Fred Dagg (John Clarke).

Other current affairs programmes produced by TV One in its first week included “Sunday’s World” (a closer look at topical issues both at home and abroad, introduced by Graeme Thomson) and “Seven Days” (a series of documentary-style current affairs investigations, introduced by Joe Cote and produced by Des Monaghan).

On the sporting arena, the Saturday afternoon “Sport on One” was introduced by Jon Neilson and produced by Harold Anderson, TV One’s head of sport.

These are quite similar to early days of TV3 as TV One was a pretty standard general entrainment channel targeted at any age a group till TV2 came along in June

The 1984 film “Beverly Hills Cop”, starring Eddie Murphy, made its New Zealand television debut on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 9.05pm on the evening of Saturday 9 April 1988.

After an episode of “Werewolf” - a US horror series about grad student Eric Cord (played by John J York), whose life changed after being bitten by a werewolf - TVNZ music show “Heartbeat City” returned to our screens in a later Saturday night slot. Introduced in 1987 and originally screened at 11pm on Friday nights, “Heartbeat City” was a mix of ‘the latest video releases, classic flashbacks and in-concert specials’ and ran for two years.

A selection of commercials and promos from off-air recordings of “Beverly Hills Cop”, and other TVNZ shows and movies during 1987/88, can be seen on YouTube - special thanks to @Sleek822 (below).

Forgot Squirt started out on TV3

Is this the British series or a different one?

It was Button Nose, not Button Moon. I accidentally put Button Moon in the previous post.

@OnAir That’s right. When Squirt began it was shown on TV3 (now Three) in 1996 and within the next year, TVNZ picked it up. With Spike, the computer-animated penguin - and successive hosts like Tom Robins, Dominic Bowden, Matt Gibb, Ryan Inglis, Kanoa Lloyd and Jo Holley - the Saturday morning show ran for 10 years and finished in 2006.
