Today’s TV: Tuesday 21 February 1984
from the NZ Listener
Looks like that Winter Olympic are 2 hour highlight weekly broadcast back in the 1980s since it’s a more low profile the the Summer Games where TV coverage is more extensive as it always. It is not fair that you have to get SKY and pay for live coverage for the Winter Olympics nowadays either the good thing is Prime TV is televising some live event but their coverage is still ametaurist
Te Karere: 40th anniversary
from the NZ Listener
@Korero @OnAir This year the Māori news programme Te Karere is celebrating its 40th anniversary. It started off on the evening of Monday 26 July 1982 as a short, two minute summary during Māori Language Week and within the next year, the news in te reo Māori had become a permanent fixture on New Zealand television - despite much dispute and argument.
Argument had flared up over whether Te Karere was to be between 3-5 minutes in duration, whether there were enough staff and facilities to support it regularly, and even on which network it would be scheduled. Longtime broadcaster and bilingual Māori Derek Fox managed to weather the rows, and Te Karere went to air as a four minute programme, on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) at 5.55pm everywhere except the East Coast, where because of reception problems it was broadcast on TV One (now TVNZ 1). The first, regular edition of Te Karere was broadcast on the evening of Monday 21 February 1983.
Today, Te Karere screens on TVNZ 1 at 4pm and has been running for 30 minutes in duration since 2009.
I think it had more to do with TV2 not being broadcast all the way up the East Coast, whereas TV1 was. I believe the switching was pretty archaic too… and wasn’t unnoticable in the slightest.
So when did East Coast get proper reception
Proper coverage? Never, there were pockets of the East Coast that only ever got TV1. Bigger places got TV2 as well, but even by ASO, the only way to get more channels outside of Gisborne was to go buy a satellite dish.
Edit: I’m talking analogue, here, of course.
Even when Prime came in 1998 Gisborne region had be transmitted through VHF while rest of the country had UHF signal. I know East Coast is different to the rest of the country
Yep, there was VHF spectrum still available there, which was always preferably over UHF, especially in hillier areas where the signal can bounce better.
Below is a list of TV licenses issued for the general area. Not all these may have actually been used, but it gives a good idea of the reach of the channels over the last 30 years of the Analogue era. TV1 by far reaches more people, and would have by miles back in the 80’s, when TV2’s footprint was still a bit limited.
FYI, Wheatstone Road covered much of Gisborne, and Whakapunake was the main transmitter for the lower East Coast (Wheatstone & Parikanapa are currently used for Digital TV).
