Classic NZ TV Listings

Yes, yes they are.

Do programs get interrupted with forced breaks full of promos and CSAs?

Promos. Some channels limit themselves to 1 per break, others go nuts with 4 or 5. Choice TV used to pad out the whole 3-4 minutes with promos (7 or so years ago).

A rugby league pre-season match, between the Auckland league team and the Canberra Raiders (captained by Mal Meninga), took place at Carlaw Park on the evening of Wednesday 5 February 1992. Fortunately, the Raiders defeated Auckland 32-14 in front of a capacity 17,000 crowd.

The Auckland v Canberra Raiders match wasn’t televised live, in fact, but TVNZ’s Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) had delayed coverage of the match at 9.30pm. Brendan Telfer introduced that evening’s coverage, and the commentators were Tony Palmer and Ken Laban.

Prior to that, a documentary called “League, Lies and Alibis” was shown on Channel 2 at 8.30pm. Presented by Brent Todd and Graham Lowe, the documentary gave us as New Zealanders an insight into the myths, legends, tall stories and characters of the game of rugby league, and a preview of the 1992 season.

Over on TV3 (now Three), Suzy Cato’s new after-school show, 3PM, was due to start in the first week of February 1992, according to the NZ Listener, but the launch was delayed until April that year.

@OnAir 150 years after the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi by Governor William Hobson on behalf of Queen Victoria on 6 February 1840, Queen Elizabeth II, great granddaughter of Queen Victoria, joined the descendants of the other signatories, the Māori chiefs, in commemorating the signing.

On Waitangi Day 1990, live cricket on TV One (now TVNZ 1), from 10am, was interrupted by crosses to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds for the all-important ceremony, with commentary (in both English and te reo Māori) by Richard Long, Tini Molyneux, the late Whai Ngata and the late Angela D’Audney.

Live coverage of the Waitangi Day ceremony commenced at 11am and ran for 2.5 hours before returning to the cricket. Then it’s back to the Treaty Grounds for continued live coverage from 2.30pm, followed by more live cricket at 3.45pm.

Later in the evening a TVNZ production, “How D’ye Do Mr Governor”, was repeated on TV One at 10.30pm. Ian Johnstone chaired a discussion at Government House Wellington about the Treaty of Waitangi; signed in 1840 but still vigorously debated. It was first shown at 8.30pm on the evening of Thursday 28 December 1989, just before the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty.

You can watch “How D’ye Do Mr Governor” through NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

*FYI: “Full House” - which screened on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 8pm on the evening of Sunday 16 February 1986 - was a British sitcom (from the creators of “Man About the House”, “George and Mildred” and “Robin’s Nest”), not a US sitcom. It was about two couples who, unable to afford their own houses, pooled their resources and shared a house.

Here are the listings from TVNZ’s first week on air.

It was decided in 1979 by the then National Government, under the late Robert Muldoon as Prime Minister, that the two television channels - TV One and South Pacific Television (SPTV) - would be amalgamated under an administration which would end the competition that reared its head in 1975. It was known as Television New Zealand (TVNZ).

SPTV ended transmission on 15 February 1980 with a two-hour farewell special called “The Goodbye Show” at 10.15pm. Within the next day, both TV One and SPTV were dissolved and became TV One and TV2 under the newly formed TVNZ.

The new administration was initially based in TV One’s former headquarters at the Avalon Television Studios in Wellington, with TV One broadcasting out of Avalon and TV2 broadcasting out of Auckland (where the national news service was transferred from Avalon). However over the course of the 1980s, operations were gradually moved to Auckland and during 1989/90, TVNZ’s Auckland television centre was officially opened.
