Classic NZ TV Listings

That’s because we, the people of New Zealand, were the first to experience subscription television as Sky started off as three channels (Sky Movies, Sky Sport and Sky News) on scrambled UHF frequencies in 1990.

The Classic Hits 97FM Breakfast show, as heard on 97.4FM in Auckland, became ‘radio with pictures’ on the morning of Monday 15 July 1991. It was broadcast on both radio and television via Sky Movies at 6am when the channel was off air, running through to 9am.

The special free-to-air coverage of the popular 97FM breakfast radio show was the lead-in to a major announcement made by Sky that day. A subscription to Sky’s three channels (Sky Movies, Sky Sport and Sky News) was changed from $14.99 to $9.99 per week.

A video aircheck can be seen on @anon36025973’s YouTube channel. Below is a Sunday Times article with thanks to the late Mark Nicholls, who sadly passed away in 2014.

Deregulation was the main reason for that, it allowed anyone to buy up TV licenses and start broadcasting, which SKY did to launch pay-tv. Australia’s broadcasting industry is still very heavily controlled.

@OnAir @Leotv @foxyrover In the first week of November 1989, the programme schedules for TV One (now TVNZ 1) and Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) were revamped.

Breakfast television on Channel 2 commenced at 6.30am on the morning of Monday 6 November 1989. It was a combination of cartoons and kids’ shows with early morning news at 7am and 8am to keep New Zealanders informed and up to date with overnight events.

In fact, Tom Bradley had presented “Breakfast News”; it was described by the Listener as ‘the first TV news of the day, just off the satellites’. The half hour bulletin, at 7am, also included a business news summary and weather forecasts from Penelope Barr at around 7.08am and 7.22am. A five-minute news and weather update followed at 8am.

Later that month TVNZ changed the title of “Breakfast News” to “Good Morning New Zealand”, but the title was exactly the same as RNZ’s three-hour morning news and information programme which included “Morning Report”. As a result RNZ took legal action against TVNZ over the title “Good Morning New Zealand” and TVNZ had to change the title back to “Breakfast News”.

“Aerobics Oz Style”, “Santa Barbara” and “Days of Our Lives” - as seen on TV One - were transferred to Channel 2.

On weekends, Channel 2 commenced transmission at 7am and all morning children’s programming (including “What Now”) was transferred from TV One. There was a brand new music show called “Sounz!”, and it went to air live at 11am on Saturdays.

Over on TV One, weekend programming began at the later time of 9am.

Much appreciated. Interesting to see what Pullover’s (2:50 on TV One) debut day looked like.

Yes, the infamous summer where TV4 ended up with test cricket - not very in fitting with its youth model - but TV3 didn’t want to disrupt its early evening programmes for the slower form of the game (ODIs still aired on 3). Also quite unpopular as TV4 wasn’t available everywhere!
I think this may be the last foreign cricket to be shown on FTA TV in New Zealand.

@OnAir “Grange Hill”, one of the longest-running programmes on British television, appeared on New Zealand television for the first time and screened on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) at 6.35pm on the evening of Monday 30 June 1980.

The show followed the lives of the children attending Grange Hill, a comprehensive school in the North London borough of Northam, and explored school-related issues such as bullying, learning difficulties, teacher-pupil relationships and conflicts.

“Grange Hill” was made by the BBC and began its run on 8 February 1978 on BBC1. It was created by Phil Redmond, who is also responsible for the Channel 4 dramas “Brookside” and “Hollyoaks”; other notable production team members down the years have included producer Colin Cant and script editor Anthony Minghella.

After 30 years, the show was cancelled in 2008, as it was felt by the BBC that the series had run its course. The final episode was broadcast on 15 September 2008.

Very interesting to see that TVNZ were going to have Good Morning NZ, but thwarted by RNZ. Imagine if TVNZ had won, we wouldn’t have had to wait until 1997 for a breakfast show. Such a different time back then.

What’s Curly and Coconut?

Hrm. It’s a bit of a mystery - maybe an animated or live-action series for children… I think.
