@OnAir In the year of his knighthood, the late Sir Howard Morrison got to fulfil a long-held dream - playing with the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. A Sir Howard Morrison special - recorded at the Aotea Centre in Auckland - was broadcast on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 8.30pm on the evening of Friday 12 October 1990.

Sir Howard was joined by the late, great Billy T James as they sang a cover version of “My Old Man’s an All Black”, and surrounded by former All Black Buck Shelford to lead the haka alongside Temuera Morrison.

You can watch one of Sir Howard’s classic concerts via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

Over on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2), Margaret Mahy’s “Strangers” - a six-part children’s drama of mystery and magic from TVNZ - was being repeated on Fridays as part of “3.45 Live!”. The series featured a young cast which included Martin Henderson (in his screen debut), Hamish McFarlane (fresh from Vincent Ward’s “The Navigator”), Joel Tobeck and deaf actor Sonia Pivac. You can watch all episodes of “Strangers” via NZ On Screen by clicking its link above.

Kinda weird how by this time all of the free-to-air channels listed here (as well as the Sky ones) were broadcasting 24-hours a day while HBO still closed down each night. What’s up with that?

@LiamP Over the summer of 1991/92, TVNZ announced that Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) would run 24 hours a day. However, it went back to a nightly closedown in early April 1992.

Aline Sandilands, TVNZ’s head of public relations at the time, replied to one viewer via postal mail in the NZ Listener:

TVNZ announced it would run 24-hour television during the summer months only. Viewing patterns at this time - with many New Zealanders on holiday - lent themselves to a far greater flexibility. We were delighted with the results, and hope to repeat the extended telecasts later. It was, however, noticeable that towards the middle of February people reverted to their “working” habits and switched off earlier. There’s usually a late movie on during the weekends for insomniacs!

Within the next year Channel 2’s 24-hour programming was reinstated during 1993, initially on Friday and Saturday nights only. By mid-1994, 24-hour programming was extended to Thursday to Sunday nights, and on 19 October 1994 the channel began broadcasting non-stop, 24 hours a day.

SKY MOVIES / HBO
In February 1992, Sky Movies (and, later, HBO before reverting back to its old name in 1998) ran 24-hour programming on Friday and Saturday nights and during public holidays only. The movie channel eventually became 24 hours a day from 1 November 1996, with Cartoon Network running from 6am-4pm daily. In 1997 Cartoon Network was transferred to the Sky Orange channel (now Sky 5).

TV ONE & TV3
Coinciding with the launch of TVNZ’s regional television stations, known as Horizon Pacific Television (HPTV), TV One (now TVNZ 1) began broadcasting 24 hours a day and taking the overnight BBC World feed via satellite on the morning of Monday 20 March 1995.

TV3 (now Three) began broadcasting 24 hours a day and running overnight infomercials on the morning of Sunday 9 April 1995. However, infomercials cannot be shown during the overnight hours of Good Friday, Easter Sunday or Christmas Day; this is due to the Broadcasting Act 1989 which states that no commercial advertising can be shown on New Zealand television during the following times:

  • Sundays from 6am-12pm;
  • Anzac Day from 6am-12pm; and
  • all day Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Christmas Day.

was this the Australian panel show, or a NZ production?

@TelevisionAU A New Zealand production. “Beauty and the Beast” aired on New Zealand screens from 1976 all the way through to its final broadcast - from the Maurice Joel Theatre at Otago Boys High School in Dunedin - in November 1986.

The show was produced by TVNZ at its Dunedin studios, but production occasionally took place in Christchurch if the Dunedin studios were not available.

That was a TV4 show about movies, latest releases &c. I think it only lasted one season… maybe two.

You’re right, @TV4. “Cin.city” was a magazine series devoted to films and ran for about two years.

That’s weird that Bold and The Beautiful was on TV One around that time, I thought it was always broadcast on TV2

I think it may have been on all main five NZ FTA channels.

Definitely had a couple of stints on TV3, popped up on Prime for a time and I have a vague feeling it might have been on TV4 in the earlyish days.

TV3 aired the series first six months of 2015 and a brief stint in 1990 where the show started life on just before TVNZ brought the rights but TV1 no
