@TelevisionAU @FootyKick The 1986 VFL Grand Final, between Hawthorn and Carlton, was played at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) and broadcast live via satellite on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) on the afternoon of Saturday 27 September 1986 at 4.30pm (NZ time).

Hawthorn defeated Carlton 16.14 (110) to 9.14 (68) in the Final.

@Sleek822 Over on TV One (now TVNZ 1), the 1975 thriller “Jaws” was shown at 9pm and followed at around 11.30pm by “Entertainment This Week”. I’ve seen classic promos and commercials on YouTube recently as I tried to verify the exact broadcast date.

@TelevisionAU @foxyrover Remember Grahame Bond - better known as Aunty Jack from “The Aunty Jack Show” (seen on the ABC in Australia during the early 1970s)? He was the host of TVNZ’s brand new (but short-lived) Saturday night entertainment show - “Saturday Live”.

Screening at 6.30pm on Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2), Saturday Live was a weekly mix of music, skits, comedy routines and various competitions on Saturday night. It featured an array of local and international celebrities as special guests.

Joining him as regulars were Jackie Clarke, Kim Willoughby, Nigel Hurst (formerly of “3.45 Live!”) and Rory O’Donoghue (a British musician who had worked with Grahame Bond since the 1960s). Australian TV and film director Maurice Murphy was one of the show’s producers, along with Jim Burnett and Ginette McDonald (better known as Lynn of Tawa).

“Saturday Live” was followed at 8pm by the live Lotto draw, and both shows were produced out of Auckland.

At 8.35pm, Channel 2 screened an hour-long special called “Safer Sex”.

Produced by the Gibson Group in association with the Department of Health (now the Ministry of Health) for TVNZ, “Safer Sex” involved comedy sketches and discussion on the ‘pros and cons’ of teenage sex, together with the facts on New Zealand’s major sexually transmitted diseases, including the wart virus and Aids. Bryan Bruce, Tania Wehi, Chris Clarkson and Australian guest cartoonist Kaz Cooke hosted the all-important special.

Over on TV One (now TVNZ 1), Sir John Pritchard conducted the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Singers and the BBC Symphony Chorus in “Last Night of the BBC Proms 1989”, a programme of rousing classical music from some of the great composers. It was shown at 8.05pm and the first half of the concert screened on Channel 2 during “Opus” at noon the next day.

The 1954 war film “The Dam Busters” followed at 9.10pm as part of TV One’s “1939-1989 World War II: A Commemoration”. It was a season of documentaries and classic movies coinciding with the start of World War II in 1939.

TV2 aired The Bold and The Beautiful most of the 90s after it was first shown on TV3. Days Of Our Lives moved to Channel 2 (now TVNZ 2) from TV One start of the decade because daytime soaps is only competing TV2 vs TV3.

Didn’t know Good Morning aired on TV2 back in the 90’s.

@Leotv “Good Morning” was first shown on TV2 (now TVNZ 2) in early 1996 as a 90-minute programme, running from 10.30am on weekdays. By mid-year, the programme was extended in duration to two hours and moved to a 10am start.

“Good Morning” moved to TV One (now TVNZ 1) by mid-1997 and aired on that channel until it ended in 2015.

@OnAir @Leotv @TV4 @nztv @Horomono @TelevisionAU @theGradyConnell @anon36025973 One of New Zealand’s most controversial broadcasters, Paul Henry, made his television debut as the host of a new TVNZ game show, “Every Second Counts”. It aired on Network Two (now TVNZ 2) at 7.30pm on the evening of Thursday 8 October 1987.

“Every Second Counts” was a game show where three married couples competed in a game of answering questions, with the goal of earning seconds that would later be used in the bonus round at the end of the show. It was based on the American and British game shows of the same name.

Over on TV One (now TVNZ 1), transmission would end at midnight after showing an episode of Patrick McGoohan’s “The Prisoner”, according to the NZ Listener. However, the channel closed down about four minutes earlier (i.e. 11.56pm) and the closing sequence, via YouTube, consisted of a preview of Friday night’s programmes and a last look at the clock. The announcer in that clip was Mike Bodnar, who had worked at TVNZ as anchor of the Wellington-based regional news programme “Today Tonight”, continuity announcer and field director.

Episode seven of the 10-part TVNZ drama series, “Inside Straight”, aired on TV One (now TVNZ 1) at 8.30pm on the evening of Tuesday 8 October 1984.

“Inside Straight” was filmed on location in Wellington, often after dark, and based around the trials and tribulations of Steve Keenan (played by Phillip Gordon, who soon won fame as a conman in the 1985 film “Came a Hot Friday”), the everyman learning the ways of the city from taxi driver George MacLean (Roy Billing).

In the episode entitled “Card Game”, it was the main event - a high-stakes card game (as the episode title suggested), and Steve needed to raise $5,000. But trouble struck, especially for Sylvia (Joanne Simpson), when conman Nick Wilde hit the city. The role of Nick was played by the late Bruno Lawrence, whose credits included “Smash Palace” and “The Quiet Earth”.
