Carols By Candlelight

I haven’t watched the whole thing, but is it another year where all the presenters share stories about their family and Christmas plans. Then Anthony and Tim perform separately, and it is never acknowledged that they are married?

Anthony and Tim did sing a song together, as well as singing separately.

Not sure of tonight, but The Carols have acknowledged that they are married in previous ceremonies.

How long has the set been upgraded to be a LED screen at the back and on the facade?

Looked great in some songs I’ve seen.

Much better than what they used for a good 20 years

Might have to be one of the worst Carols events. I was very underwhelmed by the whole thing.

What was it that made it underwhelming? It’s not as though the carols change…

You’re getting old and cynical and jaded.

Next year, don’t watch it and you’ll feel much better. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

No not at all. I love Carols. Christmas Eve isn’t the same without it. But I just found myself this year a bit :man_shrugging: by it all.

Casey was good. Anthony was ridiculous. Not sure who the opening act were. Lucy/Christy/Hannah were terrible. Silvie didn’t sing her signature song. The ‘kids section’ with Bonnie and Rob was dreadful. Etc etc etc.

Really? Don’t know what you were watching but I thought it was a great production tonight. Well done to everyone involved.

I thought it was good overall too. A good production.

Good having Gorgi Coghlan back again. Mahalia Barnes and David Campbell sang together which was nice.

Not much we can do though with the usual cross promotion (this time was Frozen the Musical and the cast from Hamilton)

David and Ally were great but I’d love to see Melbourne hosts in 2022.

My suggestion - Clint Stanaway and Livinia Nixon.

I think marina prior should be put out to pasture next year.

It’s a show for the whole of Australia. Not just Melbournites. I don’t even know who
Clint Stanaway is.

Given the Carols are performed in Melbourne, I think it makes sense to have Melbourne based presenters hosting. We don’t need Sydney people hosting everything.

Yeah, the kids portion was rough viewing. It feels like since Hi-5 and Humphrey B. Bear stopped appearing that Carols by Candlelight has struggled to know how to fill it. By contrast, Carols in the Domain doesn’t have that problem because The Wiggles appear every year.

I agree with others that Carols by Candlelight was a good event tonight. However, have to admit I did think tonight whether the event (and the broadcasting of it) would be different if it moved to Seven or 10 (its original home many decades ago)?

The reason why I say/ask that is Carols by Candlelight is in a spot whereby it’s so traditional, you pretty much know a) Who 50% - 75% of the performers in a given year will be and b) What the key moments of the night will be beforehand. While the event’s consistency is the Christmas equivalent of putting on a comfortable pair of slippers, it struggles to ‘modernize’ itself - the kids portion aspect I referenced at the start of this post is the perfect example of that. By contrast, while Carols in the Domain feels like a more ‘modern’ carols event, it doesn’t have the gravitas Carols by Candlelight has.

Don’t get me wrong, I doubt there’ll be a stage in my lifetime when Nine doesn’t air Carols by Candlelight. However, can’t help but feel the event is in need of a bit of a shakeup - something it probably won’t get as long as Nine continues to air it.

Exactly. Nobody outside Melbourne knows him.

I’m calling these the worst carols in the history of Australian television. Absolute crap songs and performances.

Nothing like a good lynch mob. Get your pitchforks ready, guys. We’re on a roll.

Get a grip. It was woeful.

Nine, like Seven with their obsessions with their Home and Away stars, cross promotion galore, the same old people like Jay Laga’aia and The Wiggles, can never seem to let go of the likes of Silvie Paladino, David Hobson, Marina Prior and Denis Walter (who I note didn’t feature in the beginning as usual). They have some different acts but it’s generally been same same each year. I get that they don’t want to alienate the traditional audience for this program but surely there’s other great singers (like Gorgi Coghlan who was on tonight) who can feature a bit more prominently rather than these four?

I liked David and Allison as hosts but other than that there was nothing that was a real standout tonight from what I saw.
