Canberra Radio

That’s…underwhelming.

well that was anti-climatic

Wasn’t it originally a FM104.7 thing? Now Mix106.3 is all over it too (given they’re the current number one station).

Yes, it’s always been a 104.7 event. In the last few years, Mix106.3 passively promoted it, but not to the extent of 104. It was always 104.7’s survey 1 tactic, and I honestly hate this idea of having both stations pushing it. Surely they would use it as an opportunity to try and increase 104.7’s ratings. If anything, doing it this way could damage their ratings even further.

The fact it wasn’t on for so long, I would’ve only brought it back to its new home on Mix106.3.

I too don’t get why two stations need to run/promote the same thing.

Then again, at least it is an ‘event’, not really sharing a survey tactic (like many other regionals do).

Rod Cuddihy being the drive announcer for Mix106.3 and content director for both Mix and 104.7 is such a conflict of interests. He couldn’t just let 104.7 have the event. He had to get in on the action as well. It’s so ridiculous!

Slightly off-topic, that only really existed because of how their independent local radio grew to be - there is only one franchisee in a region, originally on AM, and then they were permitted an FM simulcast (mid/late 80s). Then they were told to split the two formats, and instead of separate brands a lot of them simply went with “1/2” branding with “1” on FM and “2” being a gold format on AM.

That sorta carried on as late as the Bauer City networks you speak of (and some of them even got a “3” station on local DAB), although as you say that’s slowly being wound back there with the Hits Radio and GHR brands, and also increased networking.

You’ll find it’s a sales and promotions activity and the contract would have been signed for both stations. I doubt Rod would have had much to do with it.

It’s typical MediaSpy behaviour! We all get worked up into a lather and all for … well, nothing.

Trust me, those agreements are signed in cooperation with the Content department, so yes, Rod certainly would’ve had a say in it. Considering the background of experience between Zak Davies (Promotions and Marketing Director), Emily Moss (Commercial Director), Craig Wagstaff (GM) and Rod Cuddihy, they should all know better. It should not be a shared event.

i mean, it wouldn’t be MediaSpy without overspeculation

A lot of that has to do with the UK radio landscape where people are used to BBC Radio 1, Radio 2, Radio 3 etc. When the commercial operators were told to split formats the “1” and “2” was an option because listeners were used to that type of branding in the UK. It wouldn’t work here as people aren’t used to that way of branding, even on the ABC. SBS kind of does it with their radio stations but they’re so niche and the audience is so small I doubt 90% of people are even aware of them. Although personally I like the sound of Capital 1 and Capital 2 for Canberra :). If there was still an AM/FM combo in Canberra I even like Capital 1026 and Capital FM (106.3) too.

SBS are ahead of the times, great idea. Yes, for Canberra, love your idea of Capital 1 and 2.

Capital FM would be a slam dunk rebrand for a post conversion 2CA.

SCA probably still have Capital as a trademark from the CTC-7 days, that might stop a rival radio station like 2CA using it.

They are known as the capital radio network with 2CA not used a lot on air

If a trade mark hasn’t been used for three years or more, it can be struck off the register

Trade mark rights only exist on the assumption that they are actively being used

Oh, that won’t go down well with Canberra listeners. Granted, Ned & Josh never set the world on fire ratings wise, but they spent 6 years in the market. If SCA network the NSW breakfast programme into Canberra, 104.7 is done-for. Canberra is very parochial and they want a local show. At least this explains why 106.3 are taking on the Skyfire station duties next year.

Edit: I should point out, previously the Canberra stations have been protected by being a JV, and therefore exempt from SCA networked breakfast. Perhaps that’s changed.
