Canberra Radio

Given Hit104.7 does take other SCA Hit Network programming, I wouldn’t be surprised if they too will take the new Hit NSW regional breakfast show.

A real shame if this is true.

Any decision to save money in Canberra is agreed to by ARN as well surely? They’ve had a role in the changes too?

As I commented in the SCA thread, cutting local at breakfast isn’t the way to go.

ARN haven’t ever had any say over programming decisions (ARN look after admin and sales, while SCA has always guided programming for both stations). Them having local management (including a GM) to manage the JV has been an important part of this. I would imagine, this is a result of the recent SCA cutbacks and they have plans in place, most likely a networked show. So incredibly disappointing.

The fact of the matter is that both entities most probably view the Canberra market as too small and a low revenue generator, hence the desire to reduce costs.
When Nine acquired Fairfax, they sold The Canberra Times, despite it being aligned to, and probably sharing much of the content from The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age. Just because it is the nation’s capital and the seat of our Federal Parliament, it is no guarantee of dollars.

No guarantee of dollars indeed @ALH is assured when media asset owners from out of town do not program to meet the market.

ARN and SCA aren’t programming to suit the Canberra market. Two commercial FM in Canberra should have a combined share far larger.

Actually, it’s quite the opposite. The stations have traditionally been cash-cows for both networks, hence why they have maintained the JV.

They haven’t tried very hard to improve market share as long as the two JV stations and one of them is number one they don’t seem to care. I think most of the time the stations are 1 and 2 with mix 106.3 and 104.7 swapping positions from time to time. Mix106.3 being number one recently. Historically it was fm104. 7. It doesn’t help that they don’t get much competition from 2CC or 2CA. 2CC need to stop using a talk format it doesn’t rate in Canberra maybe keep with Ray Hadley in the morning but got rid of Deborah’s Knight replace it with a local show with majority music.

Refers to ‘local’ lineup next year, though might just be spin.
Not a nice way to go out.

I wonder if 2CC is to right wing for the Australian Socialist Territory with it’s 2GB programming?
ABC Canberra, and Radio National outrage it, and it think even News Radio gives it a run for it’s money.

If somehow 2CA and 2CC get fm conversions, 2CC could become the equivalent of Eagle / Snow fm, and 2CA stays forever Classic.

That would certainly put the cat amongst the Pigeons!!!

If 2CC takes on a GNFM type format I think it would be too similar to 2CA they would be better taking on a format similar to SmoothFM skewing more 80,90s music. They could even stick with Ray Hadley in the morning shift but that would be the extent of the talk back. Just play automated music or voice tracked content in the evening or overnight.

If the ARN deal goes through any new statewide breakfast show on Hit 104.7 could quickly be replaced with KJO on KIIS 104.7.

I think the current JV main priority is Mix 106.3 over Hit 104.7, and with no real competition they could gut it, and possibly reduced it down to 1 local daypart shift. It probably still will rate #2 in the market. I could be wrong.

No I was suggesting 2CC go to the same format as Eagle / Snow fm if it gets an Fm conversion to compete with Hit 104.7 or what ever it becomes.

2CA if it gets an fm conversion goes more like XL fm / GNFM with Hadley in the morning. It will compete directly with Mix 106.3 or 106.3 Triple M if the ARN deal goes through.

Canberra fm have now done this multiple times. Chucking out a show without letting them even say goodbye. The anger is reflected in a lot of the news stories across the capital today. Terribly unprofessional and classless from management there to discard a show all over again.

They took a leaf out of the old 2GO book.

How can a market of 300,000 people be too small? Hobart is a smaller population and seems to be able to support 3 commercial stations?

There’s plenty of right wingers in Canberra. They just mustn’t have an ear or interest in that brand of radio.

Not sure how market size is calculated but the Canberra region population and broadcast area is getting closer to half a million. Not small at all.

The ‘local lineup’ reference was a quote. So I’d say it came from a credible source.

Considering Canberra is a JV, why don’t we see more ARN content on-air? Eg why don’t we hear K&J’s Hour of Power on Mix/Hit Canberra?

More like their own with Scotty and nige

Because SCA program both stations, ARN takes care of administration such as sales / marketing. However if ARN buyout SCA you will hear ARN content on both stations.
KIIS 104.7 KJO show, local Dayparts, The pickup, KJO Hour of Power, Mitch @ Night.

Triple M local until Jam Nation at 6pm week nights.

You’re right. My 300k estimate was quite out of date, it seems. According to the 2016 census Canberra had a population then of 395,000.

And GFK deemed Canberra a market size of 412,000 in 2022, covering the statistical areas of Belconnen, Cotter – Namadgi, Fyshwick - Pialligo – Hume, Gungahlin, North Canberra,
Queanbeyan, South Canberra, Tuggeranong, Weston Creek, Woden.
