Canberra Radio

1008 is carrying 2KY/Sky Sports Radio

That’s interesting given your logical explanation for 88.7 taking RSN out of Melbourne given 1008 and 88.7 both serve the ACT.

Maybe 1008 are doing their own inserts like 2SSS used to do?

I haven’t heard any ACT/VIC odds on 1008, but it’s coverage is much better than 88.7 so I suspect the aim of it is to provide coverage to areas of NSW just beyond the ACT border. I have wondered why the transmitter is based in Canberra if the content isn’t accurate in Canberra, and I suspect the answer lies with it being cheaper to set up on an existing AM site rather than building from scratch.

I note the stream sounds better on 2CA now. Seems like a new interface.

Although 2GN even though shares the same interface it does not sound as good.

Yes, 2GN stream sounds awful… Perhaps when they convert to FM it will be much better.

XL FM sounds good as fyi.

If you are an old school AM fan then you listen via kiwisdr.com as a Canberra instance popped up . Wish it was AM stereo .

Made by Triton Digital - used by Grant and (until recently) Ace, as well as a few others in Australia and the rest of the world.

Nice to see Capital investing in streaming. Their online strategy has been almost as bad as BOG in recent times. All different websites of varying quality. I really wonder why the somewhat new 6iX website couldn’t be rolled out to their other stations - just look at how crap the 3GG site is!

So now they’ve finally announced the 92.9 to Triple M flip in Perth - is Canberra going to be the next cab off the rank? MIX keeping their current logo and connection to the KIIS network and add a 104.7 Triple M?

Otherwise, are Hit still on a different narrower hit music format that keeps enough of a distinction between Hit and Mix? Canberra is probably the market that is most in need of a Triple M flip - as they won’t get the more ideal one of them moving Mix over to the Gold or WSFM format.

Or is the old Hit logo staying on Hit Canberra just a legacy of their weird arrangement and you’ll have two near identical sounding FM stations in Canberra?

After reading the article on Radio Today about the SCA changes in Perth, and the comments from Dave Cameron I believe there will be no changes in Canberra.
Dave Cameron said in the article “92.9 Triple M will be the 49th Triple M station and completes the national Triple M network”.

Obviously if SCA owned 100% of Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3 they would have converted Mix to Triple M but are frustrated by the joint venture.

I think now in 2021 we are more likely to see Hit 104.7 take up the new Hit branding then switching to Triple M.

Hit 104.7 can now take their pick of any of the metro logs and not overlap to much with Mix 106.3, thanks to the metros now skewing slightly younger then before. With Hit 104.7 winning the latest Canberra ratings will maintain the status quo.

100% agree here. I can now see HIT104.7 remaining with the Hit Network now that they’ve dropped the 80’s.

Yeah, I don’t think SCA is concerned about it’s performance in Canberra compared to Perth - they the only realistic threat to them anyways. They wouldn’t be too concerned whether Mix is stealing Hit’s audience (or vice versa), and I can’t see ARN complaining either.

I’d assume the worry would be overall reach - is there a large number of untapped listeners because of the relative closeness - or do most listeners just listen to Mix or Hit because that’s all that’s there and 2CC/2CA are garbage?

Some of the threat has to just be switching off entirely, which the other moves to the general Hit network format have seemingly tried to address by generally just giving up on targeting a young audience and just having a clear slightly older male/female skewed pair.

Obviously 2CA moving to a 4KQ/Cruise style format rather than the dreary forever classic would help give them a kick towards a better format on each - but can’t see that ever happening.

Yes I 100% agree on the whole not enough choice problem - but this isn’t exclusive to Canberra. Any listeners still listening to either stations through the last few years are probably willing to keep listening, otherwise they would’ve turned off already (in SCA’s eyes). If SCA we’re smart they’d try to have two formats that are distinctly different to capture as much if the market as possible (but having the individuals stations run really broad formats can have the opposite effect). Unfortunately SCA’s offerings have proved that they’ll go with whatever is working in markets with a lot of competition (i.e. Sydney, Melbourne etc.)

And also yes, from an outsider looking in it does just seem like the other terrestrial choices just don’t provide a great alternative. Hit listeners don’t have much crossover with 2CA’s 60s/70s, and neither does 2CC talkback.

A solution would be to offer an FM conversion to 2CA or 2CC and News Radio switches frequencies with them.

Would be interesting to see how a 103.9 CA-FM might shake up the establishment on FM.

I think the ARN/SCA joint venture wouldn’t be particularly worried about the performance of their Canberra stations for as long as both Hit 104.7 and Mix 106.3 remain two of the market’s top three choices for radio listening.

While it’s unlikely that this will happen anytime soon, I think the national capital deserves to have at least three (and potentially four) commercial FM stations. 2CA and 2CC would probably also benefit from different ownership but this is another thing I can’t see happening anytime in the foreseeable future.

Yes, at least while they are on AM.

At least put MMM Classic Rock digital on air down here. Canberra- as well as Wollongong and Geelong-need a rock station of some description. I don’t mind 2CA’s format, though it definitely skews older than XL/GN. That’s why it’s unique though.

My cousin who is in her 40s listens to Mix 106.3

For some reason, hours in which Hit 104.7 switch to the Hit regional feed are becoming more noticeable. Hit 104.7’s IDs during local programming hours are still basic spoken ones, yet every other regional Hit station has adopted the “Get The Feeling”(?) jingle IDs and 104.7 plays them in hours where they take the regional feed, usually identified by a few seconds of silence following an ad break.

What’s next? Hit 104.7 cuts on local programming and starts playing the regional breakfast shows?
