Canberra Radio

Well interestingly, ARN owns the kiis1063.com.au domain.

They own kiis1023, kiis973 and kiis961 as well, so seemingly all of their KIIS network they have the domains just in case.

They bought all those variations when KIIS 1065 launched, so I wouldn’t read too much into it.
Interestingly that was before they owned 96FM, so was the 961 version for The Edge or because they planned to buy 96FM?

What program/station is currently running on 88.7 FM in Canberra?
I know it’s a racing program, but I didn’t listen for an ID.
Looking at the streaming services/internet it appears ACTTAB purchased by TABCorp back in 2014, ref: https://www.tab.com.au/info/hellocanberra

Is Sky Sports Radio now being carried on 88.7 FM in Canberra?
I can’t find a reference to the frequency on their website.

ABC classic FM in Canberra has a few issues
1 - the RDS injection is too low - needs a really strong signal to decode.
2 - Modulation is too low - lower than other Classic transmitters like 95.7 Wollongong & 102.7 Orange.
3 - stereo separation is poor - I really noticed the audio/stereo quality between 102.3 Canberra & 102.7 Orange. So they need to widen the stereo image on 102.3

Would be this I’d say, since they also bought variants for WSFM and Gold.

They need Smooth 973 too.

They sure do.

When 97.3 first launched they owned vega973 along with vega953 and vega915

Interesting to note that both HIT104.7 and Mix106.3 have gone to just one single announcer 10am-3pm weekdays, with their brekkie shows now running till 10am (Mix has Nige hosting 9-10am weekdays).

Interesting, cost cutting or are they getting ready to rebrand and relaunch both stations in 2021?

Didn’t Bryce Ruthven just make the movie to hit104.7 afternoons? That didn’t last long…

He’s still hosting their local weekend breakfast show.

Could be both? A rebranding to facilitate more networked context, cutting costs (long-term, after the cost of the rebranding exercise itself)?

I noticed this just last night. I wonder what’s happened to Karina Rappell on 106.3. She’s been on air with them for 20-odd years.

I haven’t listened for a while, maybe six months or so, but when I last checked it was a relay of RSN 927 Melbourne. The reason they take that rather than Sky Sports Radio is that ACTTAB was part of the Victorian SuperTAB pool and not the NSW TAB pool, so RSN would read out correct odds for Canberra as part of the normal programming. When TABCorp bought ACTTAB, they had to keep the SuperTAB pooling arrangement for some number of years (I forget the number).

Interestingly, back in the days before ACTTAB had their own station, and community station Triple S FM had their studios in ACTTAB’s head office, Triple S FM took 2KY/Sky Sports Radio and had a local presenter interrupt the network feed to give local odds and cover up the advertising which didn’t fit the community radio licence.

Thanks so much @SamuelGS for the info. I’m sure it’s still the case. I’ll try to listen when in the area next time.

Thanks. I remember some of those details too. Triple S were on 103.9 FM in earlier days if memory serves me correctly.

I was looking at the RSN website. Took ages to locate their coverage map/frequency list. But eventually found it here: https://www.rsn.net.au/sales-and-research/ & click on the COVERAGE ā€˜Tab’ (excuse the pun).
No mention of the ACT 88.7 frequency, but that’s not a surprising oversight.

Detouring on the topic of TAB radio stations, what’s happened to the Qld based (4IP) ā€˜Radio TAB’ radio station website? It’s gone. Can only find their Facebook site. Their audio stream still to be found with thanks to Mr Google.

Does anyone know where 88.7 Sky Sports Radio is broadcasting from in Canberra and the coverage.

I am assuming it would have to be very low powered to protect Goulburn so that would rule out Telstra Tower Black Mountain.

It’s transmitting out of Tuggeranong Hill, as it’s licenced to serve Tuggeranong.

Yes, I think the main Canberra TAB station is on 1008 AM (the old 2XX frequency). I imagine it’s carrying same programming as 88.7.

1008kHz is listed on the Sky Sports Radio site as one of their frequencies serving Canberra & Queanbeyan. Unable to confirm at present what the reality is.
