Very sad news to wake up to this morning.

I’m sure a lot of us here will remember his very long tenure as presenter of Nine News Sydney.

He set a remarkable standard for many of today’s news presenters, including Peter Overton and Mark Ferguson.

Very sad news to wake up. Brian Henderson and Brian Naylor were the #1 rated news bulletins in Sydney and Melbourne during their eras in the anchor chair.

Very sad news that Brian Henderson has passed away. Brian Henderson was a top bloke who read Nine News Sydney from 1957 through to late 2002. He was very passionate about reading News and never took his life seriously. In 2013, Henderson was inducted into the logies hall of fame. Australia has lost one of its greatest newsreaders, Vale Brian Henderson.

Classy until the very end. Some of the audio in the montage muted. Next year will be 20 years since Hendo’a last bulletin.

Sydney has had many iconic broadcasters on television and radio over the years, some who are still on-air now. But there’ll only ever be one Brian Henderson.

Hendo must’ve been an inspiration for countless broadcast journalists in newsrooms right across Australia, who no doubt will be mourning his loss today.

From a media coverage perspective, hopefully we’ll see a wonderful tribute to the life and career of Brian Henderson during tonight’s Nine News Sydney. I also hope that Seven will be sensible by allowing a mention of Hendo’s passing to make it on their Sydney news bulletin tonight, not least because two of their key newsreaders once worked alongside him…

Nine’s statement on the death of Brian Henderson

Legendary broadcaster Brian Henderson has passed away this morning aged 89 with his wife Mardi and his daughters by his side.

From Peter Costello, Chairman of Nine:

“Brian Henderson was the best of the best, he was iconic. The ultimate professional and the trusted face of television news for generations of Australians.

“Hendo was not just a much loved newsman he also brought modern pop music to generations of Australian teenagers through his hosting role on Bandstand.

“He was trusted, he had a warmth that he brought into the living rooms of millions of Australians. He will be deeply missed but his giant legacy and contribution will live on in the DNA of Nine.”

From Darren Wick, Nine’s Director of News and Current Affairs:

“Hendo was much loved and idolised by everyone of us lucky enough to have worked with him and learn from him.

“He was the biggest star in a 9News team that boasted the biggest names in journalism – Laurie Oakes, Liz Hayes, Georgie Gardner, Ken Sutcliffe, Peter Harvey, Robert Penfold, Peter Overton, Leila McKinnon, Allison Langdon and Karl Stefanovic.

“He was the epitome of credibility, reliability and clarity. He set the standard that we aspire to live up to every night of the week.”

RIP.

Great stuff. Back when National Nine News had gravitas, and didn’t have resort to news pieces about Woolies wonderful store layout (or at least that’s how my memory has got it stored … willing to corrected if I’m wrong).

Also, would a 6pm commercial news bulletin lead with a terror attack in Africa nowadays?

While certainly not what it was during Hendo’s time in the chair (the landscape has changed heaps even just in the last decade let alone his retirement), compared to some other Australian commercial TV news bulletins the quality of current day Nine News Sydney is still reasonably good.

Probably not, unfortunately.

The Bee Gees have I guess now just managed to outlive Brian?
