They must be. I think they stopped making them for a while or were hard to find in supermarkets but they returned after popular demand. Like a lot of lollies, they might be more popular in different parts of Australia.
Good odds that Coon cheese will get the arse by the end of the year. Perhaps the Fads treatment whereby they rename it from Coon to Coom or Loon something
Looney.
Is Coon Cheese still prominent in this day and age?
Iād say it has high brand recognition. It used to be the market leader. Iām not sure if Bega Tasty took that away from them a long time ago or whether anything sells more.
I donāt know why Coon didnāt see a need for a rebrand with all the bad feedback over the years. Why didnāt they introduce something on the packs which it could use as a backup?
It was a Kraft brand but it is now owned by the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter company. They should have introduced it as Warrnambool Coon ages ago. It could have just become Warrnambool Tasty Cheese now.
Bega Tasty and Strong & Bitey are usually on special at Coles and Woolworths, and Woolworths has reduced the regular price.
I am surprised that the Canadian company Saputo has kept the Coon name and has continued to regurgitate the long held excuse for using it. They know better than this and certainly would never use the brand in North America. They have the Great Ocean Road brand that could easily take over.
I can understand why the ābut itās a personās nameā argument is out there.
But itās obvious to me looking at newspaper articles that EVERYONE knew the other definition of the term Coon, even before the cheese was introduced to Australia in 1931. It would not surprise me if people actively played on the double entendre in the early 20th century.
Hereās an article in the Daily Telegraph reporting on ex-Prime Minister Billy Hughes speaking about a āCoon Storyā in 1928 as part of a conference speech.
Iām sure there are people out there who buy the same brand of cheese that they always have, and I also wouldnāt doubt that Bega & Coon still sell well. But with so many new brands and different varieties introduced to the marketplace over the past two or three decades, does Australia even have a dominant brand of cheese anymore?
As the case is with milk and other dairy products (where Dairy Farmers was the most dominant brand in NSW for years while it was Pura in Victoria and Pauls in Queensland, etc.), I wouldāve thought weāre a nation which largely buys different brands of cheese in different states/regions.
ā¦and was later owned by Dairy Farmers (with their logo on Coon cheese packaging) for a while IIRC.
Coles donāt sell it so Iāll get whatever Colby is on special when I go there - usually Great Ocean Road or Devondale, but Iāve been buying Marshās Extra Tasty Cheese a lot. Itās weirdly inconsistent in how it tastes, some blocks I get are a lot sharper than others which I prefer, but I like it either way.
I did a bit of a Google search and there was a price war going on between the top selling brands Bega and Coon so Iād say they still dominate even if there are more brands out there now.
They do. They have the block and the slices. Maybe your particular one doesnāt stock it.
Hmm - itās not on their website, and I donāt remember ever seeing it, but Iāll take a closer look next time.
I just did another search on the Coles website and found 13 Coon products. Seems like they use the brand name on more than Tasty cheese.

Oh, I wasnāt talking about that brand of cheese, just used that discussion as a jumping off point to my cheese purchasing habits.
Another brand on supermarkets shelves now. Iām assuming itās sparkling cordial?
Ooooooh! Must try those.
So many new sparkling flavoured waters⦠I do wonder if a company will grab the rights for US based La Croix in the same way the rights for alcoholic sparking water brand White Claw - the brand recognition amongst under 30ās would be huge.
Cotteeās should do that with the Cola flavoured cordial - sparkling Cola would be a hit.
Seems to be exclusive to Woolies?
Why bother paying for rights when you can just build a local brand and keep all the profits?
I think woolies got it first, but itās at IGAs now too, they come in 10 packs
