Big Brother

The scandals during the run probably had an impact on ratings, and viewers getting tired of the same shit every year

Probably.

Not sure about everyone else but I’m probably expecting Big Brother 2020 on Seven to average somewhere around the 500k-600k mark.

Ten got rid of Big Brother Uncut halfway through the 2006 season as a result of the turkey slap scandal and as a result ratings fell sharply.

Can we wait until we have confirmed details about the format before declaring what is and isn’t Big Brother?

I don’t think it declined because uncut wasn’t shown. That season had a huge audience spike after the incident.

ā€œBut, it won’t be liveā€ is confirmation enough for me that it will not be Big Brother.

Honestly don’t understand why Seven have decided to pre record the entire season. One of the biggest factors which contributed to the success of BB worldwide was the live and audience engagement element (in most countries). How on earth Angus Ross and the programmers manage to overlook this is beyond me. Why couldn’t they hand all productions to Endemol Shine and lay their hands off the productions seeing that any ā€˜Seven Studios Production’ haven’t been great at all?

The Circle is the format Seven should’ve really looked at for next year. Launch the show out of the Olympics and let the show run as it is in the UK. That will see them smash the competition for good.

More chance of Netflix doing an Australian version than Seven. The target audience will be watching the US version on there from NY Day.

The problem with your argument is it assumes that there’s only one way to do Big Brother and any version which deviates from that isn’t a ā€˜proper’ version of the show.

It’s like saying The Circle US isn’t a ā€˜proper’ version of The Circle because Netflix has pre-recorded the series or that MKR: The Rivals ā€˜isn’t MKR’ because it’ll deviate from the shows ā€˜traditional’ format

But I think The Circle US is still following The Circle format (the format is still new to not have an established way of doing things). Besides the only live aspect is the occasional public vote for a twist (like ā€œwhich new person should be the next flatmate in The Circle?ā€ or ā€œWhich flatmate do you want to get a special power?ā€) and they don’t seam to be required for the format.

Even MKR: Rivals, despite the new additions to the format (Fans/Favourites, contestants being on teams), but will have the certain things that people would recognise as being MKR (Bitching around the Dinner Table in the vague context of a cooking competition)

But Big Brother has been a certain things that most people would view as being a part of Big Brother (Big crowds for eviction shows, the public voting for eviction, Mike Goldman being the voice).

I’m someone who likes the American game BB format, so I’m excited for this new AusBB (I enjoy watching these social-strategy games). However I have to acknowledge that there is, at best an average probability of this new BB working because for most this won’t be ā€œBig Brotherā€.

He is saying the traditional way Big Brother AUSTRALIA has been made. Live shows, eliminations, evictions etc.

The way Seven and sources have described Big Brother is similar to Survivor + pre-recorded, so you will miss out on alot of aspects of Big Brother we’ve seen in the past already. The reason there was so much hype over the return is because people possibly missed the format it produced, considering the amount of what you could call ā€œgarbageā€ on FTA over the past few years. When viewers discover there is no live shows and some aspects changed, it will most likely be an instant turnoff for some.

The changes have been initiated by Endemol Shine, not seven

There is a reason why Big Brother was a global phenomenon in the early 2000s. It was the interest factor of why in the world there is a TV show about people living in a house and being filmed. The live 24/7 voyeuristic aspect of the show was a universal staple piece to the Big Brother puzzle. The US adaption has never matched the ratings it achieved with its initial season which used the public vote format. Big Brother is a social experiment in which the audience is a key factor, as they get to know the contestants better than their own friends and neighbours. It was a social experiment that also included the opportunity for the audience to get involved as well. Have a show of people living in a house and voting each other off, thats fine, but don’t call it Big Brother if its going to focus on strategic gameplay rather than the social interactions that occur in a purpose built environment. We had gameplay in survivor, biggest loser ect… Big Brother did so well because it felt superior and different to all other reality shows. Weekly evictions would have the equivalent entertainment feel as an AFL final where you would be barracking for your favourite housemate. And the fun part was being able to vote to support them. Watching them vote each other off in a NON LIVE eviction show, will feel just as the same as watching a contestant be eliminated on Masterchef because they over cooked their chicken (filmed 4 months before it even goes to air).

I understand and appreciate all of that. Indeed, I strongly criticized the idea that Big Brother 2020 will be pre-recorded when the rumours and reports of that were first discussed here.

However, that doesn’t detract from the argument I made yesterday

Why is the BB Returns twitter account tweeting about I’m a Celebrity? Is it not an official account?

No.

Seven director of programming Angus Ross on the return of Big Brother:

ā€œThis is a version of Big Brother where the game really has changed. New rules. New housemates. New house,ā€ he declares.

ā€œWith the vision that Endemol Shine have presented to us and the really talented people working on the show, we’re very confident with what we’re going to get – a Big Brother for 2020 that will be fun, competitive and thrilling. I’m also pleased to say that Australia will still get to decide who wins Big Brother.ā€

ā€œThe scale of the Big Brother house that is being built will blow people away. It is a huge, exciting build on North Head in Sydney. It’s like the house at the edge of the world.

ā€œIt’ll start filming very shortly and it will be coming pre-Olympics.ā€

So if Australia gets to decide… that means it isn’t pre recorded as was rumoured.

I take it the finale will be live but maybe the rest are recorded
