Disagree - it would sit quite nicely along those shows - no worse than sitting alongside The Voice/MKR or MAFS/The Block. No network really has a style of show anymore as they all just have the same.
10 would have a fairly easy job is all they have to do is do it better than Seven - and going live gives them a head start on that. The question is when - I suspect Seven have at least the option on the show for next year, plus networks have their own plans locked in anyhow, so it would be 2025 at the earliest before anybody could look at it (and like late 2025 as Nine and Ten both have a fairly solid start to the year). It would likely be a bit longer though - but in many ways Seven doing such a bad job of it makes another revival easier to attempt rather than more difficult.
Absolutely, hence why 7 cheaped out and took the pre-recorded option that Endemol Shine proposed.
A lot of blame being directed 7ās way (and rightly so given they signed off on it) but equally ESA as the producers really served up a turd to the network with what was pitched and produced.
And no disrespect intended to the crew Iām sure who worked hard on the series.
If they did it properly on 10 this would mean:
Daily show 30min every night
Nominations 1hr weekly
Eviction 1 hr weekly
Uncut 1 hr weekly
Up Late 2 hrs every weeknight
Live streaming at least 2 feeds 24/7 on Paramount+
This would be a big investment but on the flipside if successful would provide many hours of content as well as driving subscriptions to P+.
It would also require some big sponsors to come on board, e.g. KFC, Coles etc to help fund production
How long has it been since Uncut was broadcast? Iād say it wasnāt in the contract because I suspect Seven didnāt have any intention to revive it in the outset. Itās just an after thought.
I think this is fair. They knew it was bad and needed a year to over-edit it in post-production.
A thought relating to whether another network would do it betterā¦
I figure we all would love someone (be it Seven or an alternative) to do a live version, especially as the live voting was one of the main draws of the originalā¦
But letās face it, even if a 20-year old franchise could be renewed properly like that - so much of it wouldāve been funded by the networkās split of the 1900 calls/texts - and they donāt exist anymore, and even if they did, other consumer protections may not permit the most fanatical people to dial in as much as they could have in 2001.
Sure there are other ways of doing it and making them pay for it - look at how the Eurovision song contest does it now, for instance - but that is still an added level of friction from just getting people mad about BB or a particular housemate to text in from their couches, and not have to worry until the next phone bill.
Combine that with the obvious collapse in the FTA viewing audience in that time and⦠well, I could understand at least why Seven and Endemol/Shine went with a pre-recorded version and hoped the implied raciness of it would get attention. Certainly sounds it backfired on them, and probably for good reason - but I canāt imagine it wouldāve done much better elsewhere either in 2023.
a fair point - but Iām a Celeb does have a few things going for it that make it cheeper.
The Sth African filming site is used by other versions of Celeb. So the costs to use the location is shared among many productions of the show (I think the UK version did an All Star Iām a Celeb there) and the Sth African labour many of the production roles would be cheeper.
While an Aussie Big Brother would need a custom studio that wound have very little use outside of being a Big Brother house. Itās not going to be used for 9 months of the year. Additionally they would have to use local labour (which is a positive for the local economy, but more costly).
This year voting is free for BB UK via a dedicated app (with people allowed to cast a maximum of 5 votes per phone number) thereās no reason something like that couldnāt be done here too.
The current version of BB is filmed in a pavilion at Olympic Park, not a custom studio. It is taken apart between seasons.
There is no reason BB couldnāt be live in a studio at somewhere like Disney Studios in Sydney. There are plenty of venues within walking distance that could hold evictions/live events.
Pre-recording is almost certainly a false economy. Firstly they get less weeks out of it, and less hours per week - if Seven had done it live they likely wouldnāt have had to commission the likes of Holey Moley, Ultimate Tag and Blow Up.
Secondly the quick turn around edit actually keeps costs down - you get the impression this version is edited for months afterwards and suffers for it.
And thirdly if it all goes wrong it isnāt all in the can already with the editors dismissed months earlier - and you can bring it to an end early and stop it being a drain on the network schedule. Yes, some staff would likely still need paying out for their contract but there would still be savings to be made by pulling the plug completely.
Itās only Australia which really seems to think live TV isnāt worth doing, even though night after night it is live content that brings in their biggest audience with the 6pm news. Most other countries, large and small, see the value in live formats and how actually in the fight against Netflix etc. theyāre more valuable than ever.
Sadly the Aussie commercial networks have long been in a race to the bottom and itās getting to the point now where they are all paying the price.
Personally I donāt think it needs that much of a rest. Everyone is pretty much crying out for a return to the old live format + interesting, diverse casting and reverting back to that will bring the viewers back IMO.
BB still has quite a large fanbase in Australia and 7 have just not been giving them what they want since they took the show over.
