Yep, watching it too - wasn’t intending to but it’s been great, so many things I’d never seen because it wasn’t my era but geez the TV landscape has changed. I’ve been watching and thinking about all the various groups that would be going off and which bits wouldn’t be allowed these days.
We had the in-laws here so when we watched The Block tonight after they left we watched the Adelaide feed instead and I’m pretty sure it was in 16:9 when it aired… still looked cool though!
The other odd one was a Today promo saying thanks for making them number one in the eastern states and then thanking Sydney for watching them… Hopefully that was just an error and Adelaide isn’t usually subjected to that sort of treatment.
Nine clearly knew he didn’t have much time left and that’s how they manage to produce and air tonight’s special one day after his death.
And that’s a really sad thought and must have been hard for all those involved.
I think you’ll find whenever there is any wind of a high profile person with life threatening health problems, tributes are made straight away ready to roll. This tribute would have taken weeks to produce, and probably would have been organised several months ago when he had his leg amputated.
At the extreme end of the scale, the British media is reportedly well prepared for when Her Majesty eventually moves on. They’ll already have tribute packages and montages prepared and on-air personnel will have been doing practice runs and rehearsals. I imagine Australian media will also have plans in place though probably not as rigorous as the Brits.
I wasn’t planning on watching it, but after seeing the tribute on the Ch7 news it reminded me how funny he was, and like you, watched to the end. Ch7 would probably be upset that their tribute prompted viewers to watch a program on another channel.
In 1992 TV3 (now Three) had screened the Australian talent quest/variety show “New Faces” where Bert Newton, who died recently, was on Channel Ten at the time. It gave us as New Zealanders the opportunity to showcase their talent across the Tasman.
