Australian Survivor

The episode of Survivor you must watch live… because the ratings are in the shitter.

No matter how hyperbolic the Survivor promos are they never fail to adequately over estimate the episode.

Whilst for the most part I am enjoying it so far, the episodes are really dragging for me. They’re way too long and the repetition of both the content and content givers in confessionals is the worst offenders and we’re not even at the halfway point. So many players still get zip. It also hasn’t helped that almost every episode features a wrestling match or a purely physical challenge or usually both.

Really sad to see Sandra go but the writing was on the wall the past episodes, ominous reaction shots, nearly every player wanting her out . They even mentioned the 16 day curse in the early episodes so I never got those dodgy spoilers that said she made it far. Still I loved listening to her and her advice, perceptions and opinions were always usually spot on. It’s no wonder she won twice with her common sense and ability to read people and situations but she was underestimated then and now she isn’t so I doubt she’ll ever make it far again if she chooses to play.

Jordie is okay but the more he opens his mouth the less I like. It wasn’t an epic move to blindside Sandra or get her out early, it was the easiest and most obvious move to make. Strategically it didn’t make much sense either, especially if you are a physical male. She was the perfect shield and the perfect person to keep around as she is hopeless in most challenges and has the in built threat level deep into the game.

Samantha Gash wailing she didn’t get to play with Mark yet failing to grasp the strategic importance of having a foot in both camps was trifling.

Do those identical twins do or say anything? One of them exposed Amy’s idol and that’s it for 7 episodes. For a pair to get promos before the show started, what a waste.

I like Chrissy, but I’ve realised in small doses only. I still can’t figure out if she is truly dumb though. I think it’s all an act to disarm people but then she brazenly searches for the idol in most obvious way possible.

Mark’s getting a lot of strategic content, but it’s also undercut with negativity. Samantha Gash has chimed in it it only works sometimes and then his strategy never worked very well in the rowing challenge which they lost.

Shay playing the idol in the most stupid way possible was just the icing on the cake. Playing it on herself without her name getting mentioned as a possible boot, yeah fantastic. She could have made a move, but she just sat there probably thinking about how much Ben nourishes her soul.

Can’t wait to see a bitter, revengeful Sophie next episode.

Well that was super disappointing and yet another obvious boot, despite producers trying to fool viewers into thinking that Sophie had found an idol.

Within the first ten minutes you always know which team is going to loose the immunity challenge, which has always happened in past seasons, so you’d think they’d fix it by now. Make it more interesting and exciting, nup.

The gameplay just isn’t very good this season sadly, but it was inevitable given the theme. Blood Vs water just restricts a player too much considering you have to think of the opposing side and potential blowback by targeting someone and then deal with their loved. So the safe and easy votes are here and two people have been booted with a loved one on their same tribe and as soon as a loved one is gone it makes voting for the other one left an easy choice.

KJ irritated the hell out of me this episode. The silly tears and acting live an 8 year old whose parents were fighting were beyond ridiculous. Also why is she shocked that Sophie is playing this way. FFS she grew up with her and knows her personality and then to criticise her game play and behaviour after agreeing to play with her is pathetic. KJ agreeing to the decoy vote just shows how much they value her. If her social game was as on point as she says it was she wouldn’t be treading water down the bottom with people not giving two shits if she were voted out or not.

Poor Soph, the leper, the smelly kid no one wanted to play with. I didn’t like how everyone piled on and called her a liar, yet Kanh, Ben, Croc and Samantha Gash have blatantly lied themselves so the hypocrisy was hard to take. I loved her sass and her unapologetically being herself. Her commitment to challenges was also great to watch.

Croc & Ben are so two faced. Glad Sophie called out their lack of loyalty. I’ve noticed Croc is a lot more smug now that he thinks he’s calling the shots and had an idol gifted to him. I shouldn’t have been surprised he took Chrissy’s idol, but I was. He did nothing to earn that idol yet he still took it. Incredibly weak man.

Why is Kanh allowed to keep his idol yet everyone was in a tizz over all the other idols and they had to flush them out immediately. Coupled with the fact he’s sneaky, duplicitous and openly lies I find that strange. Maybe the gameplay really is that bad.

Really not liking how all the men are sticking together and the women are just allowing them to call the shots. Every time the women have had the power, they’ve relinquished it, which is frustrating as they are the ones more likely to go home.

I’ve found it weird that Samantha Gash gets so many reaction shots seemingly over every minute detail even when it doesn’t concern her. A fly buzzes past, quick let’s get a Samantha Gash reaction shot. Though I did love this one.

Looking at the betting odds, it seems somebody spoiled the winner again.

In fairness the editing makes it just as obvious as the last three winners have been.

Nooo Amy booted. My top three favs booted in a row.

I wish Amy had maybe waited until Mel was booted before bringing up Jordan, but ultimately I don’t think it mattered much. She wasn’t part of blue and the boys seem very keen on sticking together. At least she didn’t go out with a whimper.

Jodie continues to be a showoff and an annoying attention seeker. Eating a lemon this episode showing his bare arse pretending to be a whale (I swear we get that visual at least once a season) a few ago. No thanks.

I can’t wait to see Kanh’s karma. He was pretty callous and smug voting others out so for him to deal with his sister being booted is pretty sweet. I enjoyed the tears.

The edit seems better, though you’d think with the boring floater twins being the original targets seemingly most episodes we’d hear from their perspective at least once.

Not liking how the alliances are taking shape. It seems the boys will be sticking together and none of them seem super likable.

The challenges were a mixed bag. Liked the immunity challenge, if only for the fact it got to showcase another skill other than strength. The reward one was awful though.

My favourite part was seeing Chrissy denied the fish & chips.

What is going on with Josh’s hair; curly-straight-wavy-straight-curly in one episode, was he allowed a straightener?

I fast forward thru the physical challenges, they are so boring to me, i wonder if there has been some focus group or something that told them to have more. There should be a balance of strength, endurance, strategy, skill, memory, intelligence, agility and reflex challenges.

A tower building challenge should be a staple, makes for the best tv when the one that is about to win has their tower collapse.

New promo for next week’s episodes. 10 is urging viewers to “watch it live” rather than through 10play later.

Agree. Not sure about focus groups but I do know that the theme of Champions Vs Challenges basically saved the series with the celebrity factor and the tough physical challenges and hard competition mode and it seems that they’ve kept it ever since.

Ewww the look of desperation is not a good look 10. Is this also a confirmation that streaming numbers are essentially useless?

Survivor gets pretty good streaming numbers, obviously not enough to compensate for all the lost viewers, but you would have thought they would have made up the shortfall significantly. I noticed this with 7 and RFDS as well.

What a stupid twist.

Yep sure was. Just stick to the basics. If there is a medivac, use exile beach and spread the elimination over 2 eps.

Such a rip off to commit 2 hours and to have the episode end that way.

Some fairly dumb play tonight for the tribe not to plan for a twist with no one voted out. Haven’t they ever seen the show?

Or did they??..…and it was edited out……

Agreed. Did the producers create the twist to make up for Nina’s withdrawal due to injury? It also happened just a few episodes from the merge.
The promo said 3 big players would leave, I didn’t expect Nina to be one of them.

UPDATE: Nina spoke to Studio 10 from her US home this morning.

I’ll pick it now, there will not be 2 people ‘voted out’ tonight.

Another lame twist and only one will go.

I think it’s a genuine double elimination.

Last year when they did a pre-merge individual immunity it turned out to be either a unanimous decision of who to save of the two or a fire challenge.

If it happens again and they dont see it coming they are idiots.

Ridiculous tonight. This episode is dragging on and on with this endless tribal.

There was only one challenge tonight and at 96min duration it’s been mindless talking and talking. Nothing is happening.

It is a fire challenge this season.

The tribal merge will happen on this Sunday’s episode.

That turned out to be a great tribal. Good thing JLP announced the twist before asking for hidden immunity idols.

Love that Mel and Michelle are still in it. Looks like it’s merge on Sunday, They’ve made it thru the tough part, now challenge beasts are under threat.

Like the past couple of years, a new episode of Talking Tribal podcast has been available after the broadcast of the third episode of Survivor each week (host James Mathison even said in this week’s podcast that the next one would be uploaded next Tuesday, after episode 15). But with the late scheduling change that will see Survivor airing only on Sundays and Mondays until the winner is crowned, will the podcast be available every second week, or will it re-edited so that it will be available on Monday nights?
