Australian Survivor

I assume he’s wanting quite a bit of money. Seem he’s aiming for at least $500k because he lost the opportunity to win that amount of money had he continued on the show.

Fiji is officially COVID-19 free as of 5 June. So perhaps plans for the next seasons of Australian and US Survivor can commence.

Fiji has recorded eighteen cases of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), all eighteen of whom have made a full recovery. Fiji now has ZERO active cases of COVID-19 ( as of 5th June ).

Fiji has expressed interest in joining a quarantine-free travel bubble with Australia and New Zealand.

That is great news for Fiji. The issue would be getting JLP there

Los Angeles is also declaring that TV production can recommence, so the production meetings would be easier as well.

Does that really mean anything for Australia and JLP though? He would need to come back to Australia and do his two weeks quarantine - which is possibly just not ideal. They filmed All Stars in August/September last year so it is definitely still possible to do the same film dates for next years season.

It will be really interesting to see what happens with US Survivor. CBS have already announced that Survivor is on the schedule in late September but they have not filmed a season. Given the recent Winners at War season had a massive increase in ratings they obviously want to keep up that momentum and not stall the show. I’m just not sure what options they have. They are probably trying to work out if there is a way to film in Fiji if the cast/crew do a two week quarantine. Or potentially they have a backup plan location in the US - it could be a good chance to do something different like an inland dessert location or try somewhere like Hawaii.

Or air the Aussie Version on CBS in Primetime.

Not gonna happen. We don’t even have an Aussie season filmed and it takes much longer (50 days) to film. Even if they did it won’t rate in the US and CBS only have a 1 hour slot of Survivor (not the ridiculous 100 min EPs we get).

There is no reason why the show can’t just film locally in AU - pending JLP being able to make it from LA to Australia.

Domestic only seasons of Survivor, Amazing Race and probably I’m a Celeb sounds kinda boring when we’ve been treated to international locations.

I imagine if they couldn’t get JLP back (he’s a citizen here right, so shouldn’t be hard?), they’d probably opt for Osher everywhere to host :smirk:

I don’t see why they can’t film in Fiji even if they all had to do 2 weeks quarantine when there and when they get back.

I don’t know why they couldn’t get JLP though. He is an Australian citizen.

I don’t see the same ‘boredom’ you do. I think a local version of The Amazing Race has a lot of appeal at the moment while people can only travel around Australia. As for I’m a Celebrity I have never really understood why they needed to film in South Africa anyway. The only thing it adds is the African animals which we hardly see. We see more snakes than Hippos. And snakes we can find in the Australian jungle anyway. And in terms of Survivor what has Fiji got that Northern QLD not got? Do we see much of the local culture in Survivor anyway?

I actually really think Australian productions use overseas locations too much. There is plenty of resources they could be using in Australia. I know it has a lot to do with costs with Fiji offering funding for these shows to produce in them. But with shows like I’m a Celebrity and The Amazing Race there isn’t a lot of funding on offer from tourism industries overseas.

Yeah, I agree.

I think many Australians (particularly those who reside in our two most populated capital cities) don’t realise just how interesting our country actually is - just ask anyone from overseas who’s ever been a tourist out here!

Location at the end of the day is just a location. For any reality show, the major factor for it to do well is the cast. A good cast outweighs every other negative. As long as these shows can get a solid cast, then filming locally shouldn’t even be of notice.

I’ve always assumed that one of the biggest reasons for the Fiji location is cost - there are incentives from the Fiji Government and some labour costs are lower. They probably get good accommodation rates as well.

And loose OH&S

They still need to follow Australian OHS legislations though.

10’s head of entertainment and factual programs Stephen Tate on Mediaweek regarding the next season of Australian Survivor:

We are definitely going ahead. It is a waiting game. Very much like The Masked Singer. We need to wait until it can be done safely without endangering the cast and crew. We are still looking at all options regarding location.

They will need to make a call on it soon. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was filmed in QLD.

How about WA? They do not see much TV production and surely they would let the border open for the investment in jobs if they were to have a season over there. They have some beautiful locations.

That would be great but it was even a struggle to get AFL clubs there I can’t see it being easy for them to approve this. The QLD Government seems to be easier to work with and probably has more money in the tourism budget to help out.
