If only the judges had the power, which was what happened on The X Factor. On that show, as there were four judges, it could either be a majority or, if they couldn’t be split, who goes home is decided by the earlier public vote.
But the judges don’t have the power on Idol. Having a “sing-off” is pointless. Other than to stretch this out.
It could easily be done by 8.30 on the dot, including recaps, judges feedback, the Top 12 song of Freedom, and The Veronicas singing. The sing-offs means it will finish in another 10 minutes time… (approx 8.50)
Wondering why tonight’s appearance by The Veronicas wasn’t promoted. Surely that would be somewhat of a draw card for at least a few more ratings?
A lot of chatter social media chatter about people being outraged at the results and not watching anymore, saying producers went overboard with the shock value and it’s a negative impact etc
Yeah, it’s very strange not to promote the professional artists appearing.
I heard Guy Sebastian say on radio yesterday he is appearing on the show in a few weeks to perform his new single Antidote with Sam Fischer, so this is all planned well in advance.
Seven have butchered the format by splitting the top 12 over two nights and then having a bottom two out of 5 for each group (with one already being safe from each group). It resulted in two favourites Imogen and Ripley going home rather than the bottom two with the lowest votes out of the top 12.
Surprising that Ripley went home but I guess it’s a case of everyone thinking he was good, so he was safe and they voted for someone else to save them.
Two of the best voices gone week 1. I can’t believe Ripley left. He is an absolute superstar. Why the judges saved Denvah last night I will never understand. To me that was wrong, she wasn’t that great. When there are 12 contestants these voting anomalies do happen so they should have saved Ripley.
I just hate how crappy singers with a story/likeability factor like the cowboy guy, the trolley guy, even TJ who are all weak singers will just zoom through the competition over good singers.
Denvah was pretty good and if the judges saved Ripley then she could have gone home etc. I do agree that TJ & Trent should of been the people who left, TJ cannot sing, he has other stuff which helps his performance but not singing
Would there have been much outrage if Denvah left? Probably not.
It’s easy to say people should’ve voted for Ripley but the early weeks of voting in these shows is often quite random when there are so many contestants. So they really need to think about who they are saving, especially when Ripley has attracted so much social media attention. Probably the first couple of weeks the save should be at the bottom 2 like X Factor (especially if they are making them sing) rather than picking the night before.
The Monday show was so much better than Sunday too, so he probably got more votes than someone like TJ. If he scraped through tonight he would’ve been there until the end. It’s just all a real shame.
Australia decides Idol Top 10
Shock result stuns Australian Idol judges
Tonight, a bombshell result saw Ripley Alexander and Imogen Spendlove depart Australian Idol after the nation voted for their Top 10 contestants live on Seven and 7plus.
Across Australia, 1.3 million votes were cast, but only a handful separated the bottom four: Ripley, 19, from Brisbane; Imogen, 23 from Victoria; Ivana Ilic, 20, from Victoria; and Karratha’s 24-year-old, TJ Zimba.
Before hosts Ricki-Lee and Scott Tweedie revealed how Australian had voted, the Top 12 opened the show with a spectacular group performance of Freedom! '90 by George Michael.
Chart-topping Australian pop duo The Veronicas also took to the stage tonight with a rousing performance of Here to Dance.
As the bottom four were announced, judges Kyle Sandilands, Marcia Hines and Amy Shark were stunned at the shock result. Amy said: “I honestly have no words…my mind is blown right now.”
On Ripley, Kyle said: “The guy has millions of streams and such a unique voice. I’m shocked you are in the bottom.”
The bottom four artists took to the stage to prove they deserve a spot in the Top 10.
Ripley impressed with his take on Mercy by Shawn Mendes, while Ivana showed off her powerful voice on Where Have You Been by Rihanna.
Imogen stunned the crowd with her final performance, singing Celine Dion’s It’s All Coming Back To Me Now, while TJ brought the vibe with Bad Guy by Billie Eilish.
Kyle called “super talent” Ripley’s elimination: “Unbelievable. A real shame.”
Marcia reflected that Ripley was so popular Australia may have forgotten to vote: “You’ve got to vote to keep people on. We don’t want a repeat of this again. If you really dig somebody vote for them.” She reflected: “I feel like it’s our fault, we talked you up Ripley.”
Amy said: “You have such a bright future and I’m so glad we saw you first. It’s been such an incredible ride. I’m really going to miss your performances; you’re not supposed to have favourites but you’re a real favourite of mine.”
Both eliminated contestants received a standing ovation.
Ripley said: “I love you all. I just want to say thank you all so much.”
Imogen reflected: “Thank you for watching me. I am just happy I got to sing for you all.”
Marcia added: “That is not going to be the last we see of Imogen.”
Next week on Australian Idol : The Top 10 fight for their place in the competition with songs selected by Kyle, Marcia and Amy.
Careful kids, don’t believe a word they say. Where are any of the supposed stars that you so heavily proclaimed from last years Top 12 currently?
Remember Kyle saying Calvin Harris was heavily interested in Amali? What did that eventuate to?
These shows may have discovered stars in the 00’s but they’re nothing more than simple television entertainment vehicles now.
I have just watched the results show on 7plus (which, by the way, is not uploaded until it has finished in Queensland, i.e. at around 9.50pm AEDT) and I was also shocked by the result.
I agree with tvnews that splitting the verdict into two groups was such a bad idea. Why can’t it just be the bottom two votegetters from all the contestants going into a sing off?
It was strange that The Veronicas’ performance was not promoted in advance. It was brilliant, however I see that it was pre-recorded, based on the denim clothing the six contestants wore for their rendition of Freedom 90 (and before Imogen was eliminated).
One other thing I notice is that Kyle was wearing friendship bracelets on his right wrist. He must have gone to one of Taylor Swift’s Sydney concerts.
One another observation: when TJ was performing in Sunday’s episode, there were lots of pot plants at the rear of the stage in front of the big LED screen doors. When the song finished, crew members went on stage to remove the plants before the judges delivered their verdicts to TJ. The process took a few minutes but it was edited out.
He didn’t go to Taylor Swift.
He said he had tickets but was to lazy to go so gave them back.
I think the opening performance from the top 12 is also pre-recorded
It is.
Which explains the 5pm Sydney time start for the filming of the verdict show.
As revealed last year, at 5pm, they record the opening, the guest performances and the group performances and the promos used during Home and Away.
The press release says the grand final of season 9 will be held on Monday, March 25.
