Australian Idol

Last year Sunday Feb 19th overnight metro + regional had Idol at 698k (444k metro + 254k regional) while Survivor had 627k (488 metro + 139k regional)

So idol idol is definitely up compared to last year. Not sure about the metro figures but I assume that’s up too

I guess, at least on a bvod front, Seven would have to look at it like that then

Canadian singer-songwriter Tate McRae is special guest in tonight’s episode, in another pre-packaged appearance with one contestant.

The top 12 will be finalised at the end of the episode.

It can be seen by yesterdays ratings and how MAFS was only 302k ahead of Idol but when BVOD is added, that margin was 524k. You can see that with 9news (+20k) & TP (+8k), Survivor (+11k) also winning BVOD.

7 also won the night in FTA share but 9 won the night in Total TV when BVOD was added.

Top 12 arrive in style

Transformation Week turns Australian Idol hopefuls into stars

The final night of Transformation Week left the judges floored as the last four contestants scored their coveted spot in the Australian Idol Top 12.

Over three epic nights, the contestants stunned with mind-blowing make overs and serious vocal power, delivering outstanding performances to prove why they belong in the Top 12.

Judges Kyle Sandilands, Marcia Hines and Amy Shark were allocated one fast pass each to advance someone directly to the Top 12, despite what their fellow judges thought.

Imogen Spendlove, 23 from Victoria, knocked it out of the park and secured Marcia’s fast pass with her performance of From This Moment On by Shania Twain.

Supermarket worker Isaac McCallum, 23 from Ulladulla, NSW, was left in tears after Amy awarded the “underdog” her fast pass for his performance of Say You Won’t Let Go by James Arthur.

Emotional, Amy said: “To see you shine tonight is so incredible. We need to protect people like you. You are such a superstar.”

After Kyle’s harsh words following the trolley pushers’ recent stumbles, he told Issac: “That was excellent. I love your voice. You’ve got a gift… My wife said to me when we were watching the show back ‘oh nice empathy’ when I had a go at you for forgetting the words.

“You and I have something in common, the homelessness. I forget sometimes how invisible we want to feel when we’re there. You want to shrink into the smallest thing. You don’t want to be noticed, you don’t want to speak, you just want to live.”

Kyle continued: “You do have something special we want to hear what you have to say. Don’t be quiet don’t be nervous just be you, you did a great job.”

Grateful, Issac said: “Thank you for allowing me to come this far in the competition, I love you guys. Thank you for all the support.”

Kyle used his fast pass to ensure 21-year-old Sunshine Coast surfer Tyler Hammill progressed in the competition, after his performance of Waves by Dean Lewis fell short of his best.

Seventeen-year-old Kiani Smith, from Bribie Island, Queensland, stepped out of her comfort zone performing without her guitar.

“I want to show the judges age doesn’t stop me,” Kiani declared, before her rendition of Fleetwood Mac’s Rhiannon – her mum Michelle’s favourite song – received a standing ovation.

Wowed, Marcia said: “That was spellbinding.”

Hip-hop star TJ Zimba’s mesmerising take on Justin Bieber’s Peaches had the crowd chanting his name as the 24-year-old from Karratha, WA, revealed: “Being different is not a set back at all, it’s a superpower.”

While the judges agreed TJ still has work to do on his vocals, Kyle called him a “genius.” Amy said “you blew my mind … I could watch you all night.”

After making the Top 12, a shocked TJ fell to his knees: “I don’t cry, this is crazy… I really wanted to show people like me can do what I do and show that you need to stop ignoring WA because no one comes to us, no one gives us opportunities and today that changes!”

Twenty-four-year-old Amy Reeves from Broome, WA, delivered a breathtaking rendition of Aretha Franklin’s Think, leaving the judges impressed. Especially taken was Marcia, who noted “the show must go on,” after Amy revealed she was unwell in the lead up to her performance.

Kyle said: “If I wasn’t on this show, I would sign you to a 10-million-dollar deal immediately.”

Australian Idol’s Top 12 have collaborated to release a soulful rendition of George Michael’s iconic Freedom! '90, available to stream or download here from Friday, 23 February. Don’t miss their epic live group performance in Tuesday’s live results show.

Watch performance highlights:

Kiani Smith - Rhiannon, Fleetwood Mac

Tyler Hammill - Waves, Dean Lewis

Amy Reeves - Think, Aretha Franklin

Isaac McCallum - Say You Won’t Let Go, James Arthur

Ivana Ilic - Remember, David Guetta Ft Becky Hill

Next week on Australian Idol: Live TV is back! The Top 12 compete live-to-air to fight for their place in the competition.

Is there going to be 2 performance shows (filmed Saturday + Sunday & aired Sunday + Monday) and 1 LIVE results show or is it 1 performance show (filmed Saturday) split into 2 episodes (aired Sunday + Monday) and 1 LIVE results show

Does anyone else find it strange that the show doesn’t end it goes straight into an ad for the next episode?

Not sure if they were doing that in previous episodes, but i noticed that tonight. The show ended abruptly tonight, without the shots saying goodbye, and it went straight into an ad for the next episode. Very odd.

I watched on catchup as the ads are too annoying. But yes it did appear to end appruptly. I thought it may have been the VOD.
I wish they would stop advertising shows midway through the show with an ad for Farmer Wants a Wife yesterday and the 1 Percent Club tonight. They must be desperate for ratings they didn’t do that last year. The 1% club isn’t funny it’s just makes me cringe whenever I see an ad for the show so I have no intention of watching. Same with Farmer Wants a Wife it meant I had to see Sam who I can’t stand and should never been appointed to that show and should stay in Bowral never to be heard from again.

I was happy overall with the top 12 but I was hoping Jake would get through but unfortunately not.

By running these ads as part of the show complete with watermark they are counted towards program content rather than advertising so Seven can run even more actual ads.

I saw show 3 on 7plus after Australian Survivor finished. I think this was the best of the three top 21 episodes and demonstrated how to put Fast Pass into good use.

Interestingly, the three eliminated contestants got to speak on the stage for one last time, something the other six contestants didn’t get to enjoy when they bowed out.

Also, the fourth performer in each top 21 episode (Imogen, Isaac and Tyler) received the Fast Pass. Was it coincidence?

It’s one performance show (filmed Saturday) shown across two nights with live results show on Tuesday. I think this is a good move. Having 12 contestants all shown on one night could be too long for some viewers.

I notice the abrupt ad break when watching it through 7plus. However the 7plus version does show the hosts saying goodbye.

I didn’t agree with how Kyle used his fast pass. Kym should’ve gone through instead of Tyler. It felt like they were trying to level out the number of males and females.

Also spotted at the event was Pat Handlin, Sony Music’s former vice president of A&R, who is now the VP of Kyle’s record label 3 Keys Records.

Handlin attended the event to speak with the contestants and share his knowledge and experience about the music and entertainment industry.

Live promo (AEDT)

Promo shown in Queensland shows local acts “more than any other state”.

Misleading again to go with the “live television is back” line when the performances aren’t live - and it’s a bit cheeky when it’s Seven who’ve largely taken previously live formats and turned them into pre-recorded shows anyway.

The theme for the top 12 this week is Party Anthems. Jessica Mauboy will perform her latest single Forget You from Yours Forever album.

Two contestants will be eliminated at the end of Tuesday’s episode.

At the end of the episode one singer is given a Judge’s “save” sending them straight into the Top 10.
Another six acts will perform on Monday before two are eliminated in a Live Results show on Tuesday.

Is the save at the end of Sunday’s episode where only 6 have sung or end of Monday’s episode where all 12 would have sung?

It says at the end of episode one. So a save would be given each episode.

Correct. They actually shot 2x “Top 12 Heats” in front of the same crowd last night. Only the judges/hosts changed outfits in a break to make it look like 2 different nights.
