Australian Idol

I think Royston is a better singer than Josh. But I think Josh will still win

For me he has improved the most but that’s because Phoebe has been basically the same the entire way through. But I can see Josh winning because he has improved the most.

Example of what I’m saying

Phoebe started around 90% and is now around 96% while Josh was around 80% when the show started and is now around 95%.

So Josh has grown & improved more and people probably see that and hence vote for him

Josh will be the winner, even I was impressed with his last few performances.

He’s performance of Fix You by Coldplay was very impressive I didn’t catch the show that day but I saw a snippit of it and went back and watched the whole performance on 7 Plus. I didn’t do that for any of the others.

Seven have simultaneously padded each show and yet cut the live shows by more than half.

Why they went from 6 to 3, and then doubled the elimination show as a performance show… just seems so rushed. Why are they in such a hurry? Easter non ratings is still a week away.

Surely you allow your top 3 to perform in a performance show. I cant remember how Idol did that but for X Factor when they got to lower numbers the did two songs.

Like I said before, I believe the production itself has been the main issue of the show this season.

Yes, in the Ten days once the number of contestants was below a certain number (presumably 6), each contestant did sing twice on Sundays.

Wow - Idol got a very poor reaction on tonight’s Gogglebox. The most interesting part was the reaction to the singers were each performer seemed to get some sort of negative comment. Then the show’s padding with the shoey and Kyle singing did not go over well.

Then the big reveal where the judges made no decision on a save …

On the one hand are teenage girls even watching and on the other isn’t that what Idol is supposed to be about - finding a teen idol rather than something for their grans.

Both are very valid points.

Idol’s biggest audience seems to be females 40-54 followed by 25-39.

On tonight’s grand final, Royston will perform the potential winner’s single written by Tones and I, while Phoebe and Josh will perform different versions of a song co-written by Grace Pitts, the artist known as Graace.

Can’t believe Seven aren’t going to replicate the iconic Sydney Harbour Grand Finale for the finale. Feels very half-hearted and cheap and typical of Seven to phone it in.

You don’t see 10 pulling cheap finales even if a show doesn’t rate (DWTS on 10 is a good example) yet Seven’s version of this show just seems so formulaic and mediocre, topped off with a similar quality finale. No wonder it’s not rating.

Phew … saved myself having to buy a complete stranger a slab of beer.

Dude. Spoiler alert.

Assuming this actually aired live tonight with the mishap at the start of the winners single performance? Of all the nights to need a pre-record and edit.

It did have the live watermark at the bottom of the screen.

The brief mishap wasn’t a good look, but at least the winner moved on and song out the rest of the song without a glitch.

Royston Sagigi-Baira is Australia’s Idol

Twenty-three-year-old singer takes the coveted crown

Australia has chosen its Idol ! Royston Sagigi-Baira, 23, from Cape York in Far North Queensland was crowned the winner of Australian Idol during an incredible night of live television and electrifying performances tonight on Channel 7 and 7plus.

Royston fought back tears as Idol hosts Ricki-Lee and Scott Tweedie announced he had won the coveted Australian Idol title and the ultimate prize – a recording contract with industry giant Sony Music and $100,000 in prize money.

Taking his place in Idol history and acknowledging the support of his family seated in the audience, the proud indigenous singer said the win would change his life.

“I just want to say thank you so much to everyone who voted for me. Thank all this mob up here, all my family and friends for coming. Everyone who’s been voting, thank you so much!,” said Royston, before performing his new single, Invincible .

Australian Idol judges Harry Connick Jr, Meghan Trainor, Kyle Sandilands and Amy Shark celebrated Royston’s win, praising his time in the competition.

“Your journey through the process has been one of the greatest I’ve seen. It’s been cool. It’s going to be fun to watch your career. I’m proud of you, man, really proud of you,” said Harry.

Meghan added: “You win at always picking the perfect song for you. You’re ready. You’re so…I can’t speak tonight. You are amazing. I love you.”

Phoebe Stewart, 15, from Busselton in Western Australia was named the competition’s runner-up after her performance of Elton John’s Your Song reduced the judges to tears.

A stumble down the stairs didn’t stop the teenager from thanking everyone who had supported her.

“I just want to say thank you, everyone, and for not laughing too much when I fell down the stairs. Seriously, this has been the best. I’m so proud of myself and everyone. This has just been a gift. I’m just so grateful for everything.”

The Grand Finale show opened with a powerful performance of Ed Sheeran’s Celestial featuring the Grand Finalists Josh Hannan, Phoebe and Royston, supported by the other members of Idol’s Top 12.

The three Grand Finalists then returned to the stage to perform their chosen solo song before hosts Ricki-Lee and Scott announced Josh would be the first artist to leave the competition after securing the least viewer votes.

On leaving the competition, Josh said: “I’m just so grateful for everything…thank you to everyone else who voted for me. Thank you very much. This is not the end for me.”

A global success since 2001, the Idol franchise has launched the careers of many multi-award-winning artists including Aussies Guy Sebastian, Jessica Mauboy, Matt Corby, Ricki-Lee, Anthony Callea, Stan Walker, Casey Donovan and Courtney Act.

International music icons Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson and Adam Lambert also started their brilliant careers on the Idol stage.

Well voting was open until 7pm so it had to be close to live. The mishap was super awkward and we also had Phoebe tumble down the stairs too just before the winners announcement. These moments actually made you realise how little Live TV that we actually get these days.

Disappointed in the outcome but it feels like he was always going to win. Some of Royston’s performances (even tonight) felt a bit karaoke to me.

Everything was live tonight except the opener and top 12 performance and Jess. Harry’s performance and everything else was live.

Really poor choice of winner. Both Josh and Phoebe are miles ahead of Royston in talent.

I stand by my comments. I don’t think Royston is that good. He shouldn’t have even been in the Top 3. I don’t think we will hear from him again anyway. Josh, Phoebe and Amali will smash it.

Really really disappointing result.
