Tonight’s actual live show finished approximately 5 minutes before the advertised finish time. While the pre-recorded shows finished after the scheduled advertised time? Work that out… lol.

The show itself… well, they had the bottom 4 peform another song just for the sake of it. I honestly cant remember if the original had the bottom 2, 3.or 4 re sing? Im assuming they did?

Next week, Adam Lambert is peforming. Not sure which night yet.

They used to have a bottom 3 (although for most of its run only 1 contestant left per week) and it was only the eliminated contestant that performed. The bottom contestants performing feels very X Factor, except there is no chance to save them.

I have just found out that Maya Weiss (who was eliminated last night) also competed in the second season of The Voice back in 2013, the same year as Celia Pavey aka Vera Blue, and eventual winner Harrison Craig. Maya made it to the battle rounds where she lost to Kiyomi Vella.

Poor result for the live show last night in the key demos ranking just 13th in 25-54 beaten by the 9:00pm shows on Nine (Big Miracles) and 10 (Would I Lie To you?).

And she will go back into obscurity now just like all those others. What we learn here is that seems that the only contestant that could find success was Vera Blue, who had to change her name and disassociate herself from the talent show.

Interesting interview Jasey did with Mediaweek today after last night’s elimination.

For Fox, being a part of Australian Idol was “difficult”, with the 26-year-old admitting that the competitive nature of the show wasn’t a natural fit.

“The competition was sort of a difficult thing for me,” he said. “I’m not competitive in any way. I’m only extremely competitive with myself, and I want to do very well. However, a competitive environment is not something I take well to. It doesn’t make me feel good, and it was bothering me if I’m very honest.

Even though he is talented and performs live on a regular basis, Fox admitted that he knew he wasn’t going to win.

So applies for competition. Loses competition. Says he doesn’t like competition.

According to News Corp music writer Kathy McCabe, while this year’s Idol contestants have an estimated catalogue of about 1000 songs to “choose” to perform, new copyright arrangements mean Seven has to pay for a licence for particular tracks, which was imposed by some record companies to maximise the fees payable to their songwriters. New songs are more expensive to licence compared to older hits, and a 90-second performance is also cheaper than licensing the entire song.

This means for example, contestants won’t be able to perform hit songs by Harry Styles, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift in the past 12 months.

I think you’ll find tonight’s episode will dispute that last comment. One contestant sings a recent Harry Styles song tonight and another one sings a song which is also currently heard on Hit Music Stations around the world.

Just because they’re more expensive, doesn’t mean Idol won’t use them.

It’s interesting how licencing has changed. Ricki-Lee said on Nova recently that when they performed nearly 20 years ago, they could practically perform any song they wanted (it was rare that an artist wouldn’t allow their song to be used). Now, there are a lot less choices for the contestants, so some find it harder to pick a song that they are comfortable singing.

Maybe it will be limited to when their are less contestants or for those who the producers think will do well.

Like I said above there is a Harry Styles song tonight and a Maneskin song. There is no issue with singing recent songs.

Padding. Thats legit the reason they’re doing it.

Can Meghan start acting like a 29 year old, and not scream, squeal, interrupt others and have that odd look with every contestant…

And yes, there’s a lot of padding, with the contestants trying to guess which judges chose their songs. It’s unnecessary.

It has to match MAFS’S running time.

Noora dazzles her way into the Top 8

Australian Idol judges save singer from public vote

The Australian Idol’s Live Shows continued tonight on Channel 7 and 7plus, as our all-star judges selected one song for each of our Top 10 to perform. Picking from the judges’ shortlist, the contestants rose to the challenge while the judges flexed their competitive edge, tallying their successful song selections.

Placing in the bottom four last week, Noora H, 28, proved her place in the competition with a dazzling performance of The Voice Within by Christina Aguilera. Judges Kyle Sandilands, Meghan Trainor, Amy Shark and Harry Connick Jr were left in awe by her astonishing performance, with Meghan stating it was her favourite performance of the competition. All judges agreed to award Noora the save, advancing her to next week’s Top 8 show.

Rose farmer Josh Hannan, 21, moved the audience by singing Forget Me by Lewis Capaldi. Amy commended the Victorian for being consistently amazing, echoing Kyle’s comments that Josh was “radio ready”.

Far North Queensland student Royston Sagigi-Baira, 23, showed his vulnerable side performing I Won’t Let You Go by James Morrison, a song he sang at his mother’s funeral. After receiving a standing ovation, all judges applauded Royston for showing a raw and vulnerable side to his artistry. There was not a dry eye in the house when Ricki-Lee also revealed that Royston’s brother Richard had flown down for the show, surprising him in the audience.

The recipient of last week’s judges save, high school student Phoebe Stewart, 15, returned to the stage with a mesmerising, stripped-back rendition of ABBA’s Dancing Queen. Kyle exclaimed Phoebe’s performance was so good that the judges might as well crown her the winner of Australian Idol now.

The pressure of the competition proved too much for Western Australia’s Sash Seabourne, 25, as he performed Phil Collin’s classic In The Air Tonight. Meghan and Amy labelled his performance pitchy and underwhelming. Student Angelina Curtis, 15, was also off her game as she put a funk twist on Harry Style’s hit As It Was. The judges critiqued Angelina’s stage presence, noting she looked uncomfortable stepping away from the piano.

Proving he is a rock star in the making, Brisbane’s Ben Sheehy, 24, performed Beggin’ by Måneskin. While Ben nailed the vocals, both Harry and Kyle critiqued his performance skills, Kyle likening his off-beat dancing to an awkward artificial intelligence cyborg.

Harry Hayden, 18, was in the firing line again this week after singing Sam Sparro’s Black and Gold. Harry Connick Jr said he seemed crippled with nerves, while Kyle served up some home truths, stating Harry’s skill level wasn’t good enough for the competition.

Meghan proved victorious in the judges’ song choice competition, totalling four songs over Harry’s three, Amy’s two and Kyle’s one.

Tomorrow night on Australian Idol: Voting is now open! Australia decides which artists will proceed to the next round of the competition and American Idol mega-star Adam Lambert performs live on the Idol stage.

Bit of a mess of a show tonight. It’s very evident the age restriction for this year is impacting the quality.
