ARN Regional (formerly Grant Broadcasters)

Yes it’s a bizarre strategy.

what i have been told is that with the top 40 stations there trying to mimic the hit network radio stations and moving there demographics to 36+ and above

They need to take another listen to the Hit network stations, they sound nothing like the Grant stations. They might have the odd 80s and 90s song but they generally still sound contemporary. The Grant stations just sound like a mess.

Perhaps the only bright spot for the Grant stations, at least music-wise, is those that carry the “Classic Hits” log. Those stations include Zinc 96, 4BU, 4CC, 4MK, 4CA, 2ST, 2EC, 2NM, Gold Central Victoria, River 1467, 7AD, 7BU, 5MU, 5RM, 5CS-AU & 5CC.

Power 100 in Townsville is another stand-out on among the Grant stations, music-wise, with its rock format.

I think their new strategy is going to bit them on the ass. with streaming now becoming better than traditional radio people can listen to other radio stations of there choosing. I know people want in radio is localism but I am wondering if what they are doing will turn people off? I mean people of my area (the 80s) still want and like modern music not music from the 80s and early 90s lol I was born in 1984 and I was 15 in 1999 so I like music from now all the way back to 1999

I agree. I actually don’t mind the music format on the Regional Hit stations.

I was down in the Brisbane area last week and had a listen to Hot91 and River94.9. The music on both stations sounded like a mess. The biggest disappointment was how Grant Broadcasters have destroyed River94.9.

Yes they really have destroyed River 94.9. It’s a mess.

I normally listen to Power FM when I visit family in Murray Bridge but I doubt I will much when I go there in a few weeks, mostly will listen to Flow FM (only because they don’t stream), 5MU and Adelaide stations

I haven’t listened to River for a long time either.A few years ago I knew I would hear a song that none of the other commercial FMs ever played, not any more

Exactly. It used to be the place to go for something different, now it’s just same same. The other thing is there’s so many other options on DAB now if you want to hear something different. River need to find a niche again. Smooth or Easy Hits on FM would give them a chance to capture an audience that might not have DAB.

This news is about 2 weeks old, but I’ve only just found out about it.

Australian Radio’s most awarded football coverage, K rock Football, is the new home of the Geelong Football League, with the multi award-winning radio broadcaster signing on as the official Broadcast Partner of the GFL and AFL Barwon for the next two seasons.

In fitting with its Premier status across Victoria, the GFL will have K rock Football’s team, headed by award-winning commentator Tom King, broadcast the GFL Match of the Round on FM95.5 - including all finals - in 2021 and 2022.

Doubling down on the strange positioning of KRock. Footy coverage works on Triple M because the music around it also appeals - you gain listeners there who then stay during the weekdays.

Krock is the opposite - people who like that music mix will go elsewhere on weekends, and those who want the footy will tune out the moment it stops.

From memory, Krock used to play a more triple M style of playlist. Not sure why it changed…

So they’re replacing AFL coverage with local footy?

They have Cats games and now the local leagues. It’s a bizarre choice.

What will 3BA in Ballarat Broadcast? The Ballarat Football League.

At this rate, I expect 2NM to be broadcasting Group 21 games on a weekly basis.

I think K-Rock is reducing coverage of AFL matches not involving the Cats. For example, if the Cats play on Friday night, then K-Rock will cover GFL matches on Saturday and Sunday. The major issue will be during August and September when the station has to cover both AFL and GFL finals.

The press release indicates they’re broadcasting one GFL match per week.

I think those GFL games may have been on KIX previously. There’s a KIX caravan always parked at the GFL headquarters
