Welcome to Brisbane. Looks like you’ve got a great takeoff out to the west, judging by the background in your pictures. And surprisingly enough, the CBD can actually be a half-decent DX spot depending on where exactly you are.
91.5 is fairly good going without enhancement, as is 89.1. Tell me, what do you get on 92.9 there? Does Toowoomba outdo Canungra, or are they both a mess. And what about 104.9 - does the Sunny Coast or Southern Downs win out?
Currently receiving long haul tropo inland tonight in Mildura via the horizontal wideband yagi. All of Mt Cenn Cruiatch (723km) in again, as well as Narrabri ABCs (877km) received for the first time, all with RDS. Also getting traces of Bethungra / SW Slopes ABCs also but nowhere near RDS let alone stereo. The usual suspects of tropo are present as well (Bendigo, Broken Hill, Loxton, Murray Bridge).
The ancient inland sea of the Murray and strong high pressure strikes again! Great work on Narrabri. I wonder if the Southern Downs and Darling Downs are possible from there. They use the Sydney channels so should be relatively clear.
And probably even more exceptional that you’ve got this in July.. My experience has been that July and August are generally the worst months of the year for FM DXing.
Thanks
I did actually try for southern Queensland as well, though there was no sign of them, not even a whiff. Also no sign of the commercials either from Mt Kaputar despite receiving ABC NewsRadio (though without RDS) which was at a lower power level than 98.3 Now FM (20kW for ABC vs 100kW of Now FM) - possibly down to the height of the duct relative to the transmit array.
In general it seems like I have the opposite luck, the winter months coupled with the blocking highs are like magic for propagation over long distances.
Its power is very directional, the 100kw pretty much only goes towards Moree / Narrabri area, most other directions are a fraction of that eg. only 3kw towards Gunnedah.
Yes, Now is very hard to hear in Sydney due to the null to the south. This is to reduce overspill to Gunnedah and Tamworth (though Now can still be heard there…you can’t stop the mighty Mt Dowe entirely)!
Driving between Cobar and Nyngan in July last year I had The Hat at full tilt, so it gets out well to the west. Not sure if this is regular reception out there, though it was mid afternoon which is generally the worst time for tropo
Yes, but not sure what SBS station it was, it was playing foreign music, so didn’t sound like SBS Food though.
…
Now at Ballina, DXed at Woolgoolga Headland on the way up.
Some good catches despite the windy and overcast weather. Most metro Brisbane and Gold Coast stations were received, but a lot of fading. ABCs from Southern Downs were heard too, and were more stable.
Best catch was a brief Hot 91.1 Sunshine Coast. Was only heard for about 10 seconds, a lucky one as I tried a few more times for it but nothing then Couldn’t get 91.9 at all, 92.7 blocked by Sky Racing Port Macquarie. Not received that there before.
Were you able to get all of the Gold Coast commercials? A while back when I was there I could get a faint Hot Tomato but struggled to get Sea or TripleM
I had 94.1 Gold Coast clear from the top of North Brother in September 2023. That’s the furthest south I’ve received the GC, as well as others like River 94.9 and KIIS 97.3. There was some enhancement that morning, however.
Woopi Headland is usually the furthest south for a lot of those SEQ signals in normal conditions. And yes, 91.1 HOT is usually the only one receivable from Nambour.
