AM and FM DX

Watching it go back the other way on one of the midwest servers…

Yes, imagine if you got an area like Southern California or the BosWash corridor (Boston to Washington DC) via skip. Stations on top of stations on top of stations; it would be almost like tuning the Earth from the Moon. I wonder if stations would blend to simple white noise in extreme cases; I have had similar on 88.0 during strong skip to QLD.

In Europe it would be similar, particularly when Italy is received.

I did some FM DX on a LA > NYC flight a few years back. Never heard such a busy FM band before.

A bit of enhancement about today with the mild conditions.

Took the car up to Braye Park Lookout in Newcastle and on the car radio, received the Upper Namoi ABCs with RDS on 99.1, 99.9 and 100.7 (but oddly not 96.7 since that’s the only one of those without some sort of CCI underneath). I’ve not received those with RDS on the car radio there before.

Also received all Armidale ABCs on 101.1, 101.9, 102.7 and 103.5. 102.7 is a good get, being only 4kw and has to contend with ABC Classic Orange. No RDS on any of them however, the signals were a bit weaker than the Mt Dowe ones.

Also had Triple J Coffs 91.5 with RDS too.

Having some exotic to me DXing tonight on MW and the lower part of SW. Basically things I don’t get everyday for propagation and noise reasons. The stations that I could open up the bandwidth on are marked with [WIDEBAND] meaning I could listen to their full 18khz bandwidth with little to no interference.

558 - 6WA Wagin (fair) / CCI with 4GY Gympie
585 - 7RN Hobart (good) / CCI with 2WEB Bourke
603 - 4CH Charleville (good) / CCI with 2RN Nowra
630 - 4QN Townsville (fair) / CCI with 2PB Sydney
738 - 2NR Grafton (strong)
756 - 2TR Taree (good) / CCI with 3RN Wangaratta
783 - 8AL Alice Springs (fair) / Splatter from 774 3LO and 792 4RN
909 - CNR 6 China (good)
918 - 4VL Charleville (strong) [WIDEBAND] / slight CCI with 6NA Narrogin
990 - 4RO Rockhampton (fair) / Splatter from 981 3HA and 999 2NB
1044 - 4WP Weipa (weak) / strong CCI from 5CS Port Pirie
1098 - 4LG Longreach (good)
1116 - 4BH Brisbane (good) / CCI with 3AK 1116
1215 - 6NM Northam (fair) / CCI with Newstalk ZB NZ
1287 - Newstalk ZB NZ (good)
1296 - 6RN Wagin (good) / slight CCI with 4RPH Brisbane
1377 - 3MP Melbourne (strong) [WIDEBAND]
1395 - 5AA Adelaide (fair) / CCI with 2LG Lithgow
1602 - 5LC Leigh Creek (weak) / strong CCI with 3WL Warrnabool

1825 - UNID Amateur station (fair) - Discussing WW2 and various topics including Neville Chamberlain’s WW2 annoucement
1865 - VK3SL transmission (good) - Classic 1950s and 60s music
2310 - Shortwave Australia (fair)

I’d be happy for clues on the 1835khz station, it seems to be playing back a program in AM modulation, the same as what VK3SL’s program was despite being in the 160m amateur band. Still interesting to hear these.

864 is 4GR, Triple M. 1580 is KBLA Los Angeles.

Yes, that would be 1580 KBLA Los Angeles with a talk format. That’s good going from Mildura.

The other one that can be heard sometimes is KEIB on 1150, though much less often than KBLA. There’s also XERF from Mexico on 1570.

Don’t mind me getting my Gs and Qs mixed up, just need my glasses…

I never thought I’d hear mainland USA on MW. Most nights I see 1570 as a carrier only, plus there’s others scattered across the bands that are under splatter or in the main broadcast bandwidth of Australian channels.

Yes, even with SSB, it’s a challenge to hear anything from the US in the southeast part of the country.

Up in Cairns- away from the high concentration of Australian MW stations- it’s a fair bit easier.

With 1179 soon to be vacant, this might open the door for 1180 Radio Marti.

And also a bit closer to the US as well.

Just having a look on the Kiwi, 1180 zoomed right in does show a carrier and modulation, and I can hear it try to come in under 1179 / 3RPH with the iconic whistle of an off centre carrier. So I think Radio Marti is very possible when 3RPH goes in a couple days time.

Staying for the first time ever in Brisbane tonight, in one of the tallest buildings in the city. Overall pretty good results for flat conditions

Great results!

In one of the Meriton buildings?

I imagine you must be in western facing apartment to get good signals from north, south and west.
