AM and FM DX

Thanks for the maps @tvcl - very helpful.

I’m going to guess that 102.9 is the TCBL (TEABBA Radio) from Daly River - as it is closest & heard more frequently. No signals on on 106.1 & 107.7MHz though… ,but these may not be on air or the RX antenna may not favor these higher frequencies. :person_shrugging:

102.1 & 103.7 is rarer. I haven’t heard any signals on 106.1 & 107.7 which makes the identification process a little more challenging too. Other signals heard at the time were Adelaide River’s 98.9 & 100.5.

I’ll have a think about the frequencies 102.1 & 103.7 a little more.

We should receive some interesting stations over the next 12 months from this RX webserver.

I thought that 102.9 was Day River recently

Thanks. Programming on 102.9 & 102.1 was parallel with the local TEABBA outlet on 87.6MHz.

A little closer to home. I have been hard at work getting the permanent receive antenna set up for the KiwiSDR, located at the same site where I have my second TEF server. Using a 9:1 balun and 71ft of fencing wire, here is what is received on MW and SW (Australia only) during the day. As its a work in progress, there are some extra station carriers I can see hiding in the waterfall and the noise which are not really receivable and not loggable.

The Kiwi is available on the map, http://rx.linkfanel.net/ for all to play with, supporting up to 3 users at once.

4835 - Shortwave Australia Bendigo (good)
4970 - XRN / Radio 5-6-7 (fair)
(both affected by solar inverter running)

Receiving both Shortwave Australia and Radio 5-6-7 during the day has been a challenge to say the least, only the Kiwi with the 71ft longwire can receive them. Due to noise only the 4835 frequency of SW Australia is receivable, but one day I hope to clear it all up and get the 2310 night-time channel receivable as well as the 160m amateur bands.

Years of setting up electric fences for cattle taught me that those would make good radio antennas
I find being crafty with the resources available often work just as well as commercially available ones, if not better in some circumstances.

Agreed, and the gutter around the roof is pretty useful too.

Assume this is Sale? Wasn’t on when I passed through back in January.

Thanks for the report from Cloncurry too. I am assuming SBS is actually on air?

And today I got it sorted out. What a huge difference night-time DX has become. Many first time catches here from New Zealand. Many channels were basically multiple stations on top of each other, making it tricky to pick out.

It’s fun doing this with an excellent setup.

Worth noting too that I had a fairly good carrier signal come up as well on 1290khz, Newstalk was too close to identify it under the splatter, but I wonder what that could have been? From the small snippets it didn’t sound like it was in English, Asia don’t use 10khz steppings either so no idea where it’s from.

A couple of minor Upper Hunter updates from my trip up there today.

Mangoola Mine

89.3 not on air (was broadcasting 2HVR ABC Upper Hunter)

90.1 is now broadcasting Power FM (previously 2NM)

(90.9 JJJ still on air)

Also the 2 x United Collieries Mines East that now have RDS (as per RDS thread post), but probably useless info for DX since the RDS level is very low.

Had Hit from Moranbah fading in and out over the top of local c91.3 just now. Es? Or something else?

It was hard to do a screenshot because the RDS kept jumping between c91.3 and Hit Emerald.

Edit: Home Hill coming in now too:

Edit 2: First time RDS catch for me:

Townsville also:

I think I had an E (?) when I was out in the car yesterday.. on 89.1 .. was talk content, was only there for about 5-10 seconds… no idea what/where (maybe News Radio Emerald based on the above?)… the car radio picked it on the auto seek tuning.

I can confirm it was Es, I had both 92.3 Triple M and 93.1 Hit as well going back over the logs, as well as 98.7 Triple M Mackay. Too widespread for Ms?

Es opening still alive here, currently getting a mixture of Townsville and Bowen ABCs, the latter of 92.7 an 96.7, both 100w stations.

After missing out on the Winter E-Skip I was busy with some IRL stuff. To make it up, it’s time to go to the Northern Hemisphere to chase some E-Skip. Went to a Server based in Florida and did receive some stations from the American Midwest, most notable being 92.3 Detroit. Of course you may get a potpourri of stations on one frequency during E-Skip openings in America. Also a few NPR Stations as well as some more Stations from Michigan and Ohio.
